  • During the last decade, the exploration of nanoscale device and circuitry based on molecules has gained increasing interest. In parallel with this, considerable effort is being devoted to the development of molecular photonic/electronic materials based on various porphyrin arrays. This involves light as an input/output signal and excitation energy migration as a mechanism for signal transmission. Absorption of a photon at the light collector end of the porphyrin array yields the excited state, which migrates among the intervening pigments until reaching the emitter, whereupon another photon is emitted. As a consequence, it is relevant to understand the excitation energy transfer (EET) processes occurring in various forms of porphyrin arrays for the applications as artificial light harvesting arrays and molecular photonic/electronic wires. Since the excitonic (dipole) and electronic (conjugation) couplings between the adjacent porphyrin moieties in porphyrin arrays govern the EET processes, we have characterized the EET rates of various forms of multiporphyrin arrays (linear, cyclic, and box) based on various time-resolved spectroscopic measurements. We believe that our observations provide a platform for further development of molecular photonic/electronic materials based on porphyrin arrays.

  • Aalto designed his own modern architecture in comparison with other modern architects of his days. It is because Aalto went beyond the principle of dogmatic functionalism based on his attitude not to copy images of functionalism but to fulfill function of the building. He decided architectural form and space according to logical basis including the effective use of light and sound. Vuoksenniska church, as is called the most exceptional and notable church in his works, was designed based on the fulfillment of program. As he knew that the program needed the extension of the main church space into social areas, he put emphasis on individuality of space rather than the wholeness of space. Sound and light analysis of Vuoksenniska church shows that Aalto tried to have adequate environment of each space at the start and Integrate them later. The spatial configuration of Vuoksenniska church shows that the individuality of space has priority over the wholeness of spaces. Discordance between roof form and ceiling is the best example for this matter. Aalto designed various windows that have different sizes, figure and location to induce desirable light for each space of the church. He also adjusted the shape of the ceiling and the angle of wall for a effective sound transmission. This result indicates that he knew the activity of the church is normally confined to one weekly morning and the whole space Is hardly used as a religious purpose.

  • Extraordinary phenomena related to the transmission of light via metallic films with subwavelength holes and grooves are known to be due to resonant excitation and interference of surface waves. These waves make various surface structures to have optically effective responses. Further, a related study subject involves the control of light transmitted from a single hole or slit by surrounding it with diffractive structures. This paper reports on the effects of controlling light with a periodic groove structure with Fresnel-type chirping. In Fresnel-type chirping, diffracted surface waves are coherently converged into a focus, and it is designed considering the conditions of constructive interference and angular spectrum optimization under the assumption that the surface waves are composite diffracted evanescent waves with a well-defined in-plane wavenumber. The focusing ability of the chirped periodic structures is confirmed experimentally by two-beam attenuated total reflection coupling. Critical factors for achieving subwavelength foci and bounds on size of focal spots are discussed in terms of the simulation, which uses the FDTD algorithm.

  • Autonomous cars require the integration of multiple communication systems for driving safety. Many carmakers unveil mirrorless concept cars aiming to replace rear and sideview mirrors in vehicles with camera monitoring systems, which eliminate blind spots and reduce risk. This paper presents optical vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications for autonomous mirrorless cars. The flicker-free light emitting diode (LED) light sources, providing illumination and data transmission simultaneously, and a high speed camera are used as transmitters and a receiver in the OCC link, respectively. The rear side vehicle transmits both future action data and vehicle type data using a headlamp or daytime running light, and the front vehicle can receive OCC data from the camera that replaces side mirrors so as not to prevent accidents while driving. Experimental results showed that action and vehicle type information were sent by LED light sources successfully to the front vehicle's camera via the OCC link and proved that OCC-based V2V communications for mirrorless cars can be a viable solution to improve driving safety.

  • A Visual Light Communication(VLC) system is a concept of converging illumination with communication. Design of the VLC system aims mainly at minimizing flicker for the illumination and maximizing transmission distance for the communication. This paper proposes an effective detection scheme of the transmitted signal by attenuating noises which may be included in the signal, and then presents implementation results. Inserting designated low and high pass filters in first and second implementations, the receiver became to improve the perception rate of transmitted signals. This verified a relatively higher possibility of receiving data in a dim light, so that the communication distance can be expanded in the visual light communication system.

  • This paper proposes a single image dehazing that utilizes the transmission estimation with low complexity and the pixel-based JBDCP (Joint Bright and Dark Channel Prior) for the effective application of hazy outdoor images. The conventional transmission estimation includes the refinement process with high computational complexity and memory requirements. We propose the transmission estimation using combination of pixel- and block-based dark channel information and it significantly reduces the complexity while preserving the edge information accurately. Moreover, it is possible to estimate the transmission reflecting the image characteristics, by obtaining a different air-light for each pixel position of the image using the pixel-based JBDCP. Experimental results on various hazy images illustrate that the proposed method exhibits excellent dehazing performance with low complexity compared to the conventional methods; thus, it can be applied in various fields including real-time devices.

  • Ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs) were grown on a patterned n-type GaN substrate (PNS) with 200 nm silicon-di-oxide (SiO2) nano pattern diameter to improve the light output efficiency of the diodes. Wet etched self assembled indium tin oxide (ITO) nano clusters serve as a dry etching mask for converting the SiO2 layer grown on the n-GaN template into SiO2 nano patterns by inductively coupled plasma etching. PNS is obtained by n-GaN regrowth on the SiO2 nano patterns and UV-LEDs were fabricated using PNS as a template. Two UV-LEDs, a reference LED without PNS and a 200 nm PNS UV-LEDs were fabricated. Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Photoluminescence (PL) and Light output intensity- Input current- Voltage (L-I-V) characteristics were used to evaluate the ITO-$SiO_2$ nanopattern surface morphology, threading dislocation propagation, PNS crystalline property, PNS optical property and UVLED device performance respectively. The light out put intensity was enhanced by 1.6times@100mA for the LED grown on PNS compared to the reference LED with out PNS.

  • This paper describes the construction of a circular polariscope. Generally, a circular polariscope contains four optical elements and a light source. The first element following the light source is called the polarizer. It converts the ordinary light into plane-polarized light. The second element is a quarter wave plate which converts the plane-polarized light into circularly polarized light. Following the quarter wave plate, a specimen made of transparent photoelastic material is located in a loading device. The second quarter wave plate is set and the last element is the analyzer. These polarizing elements, two quarter wave plates and two polarizing filters, were purchased from the USA. Frames and other structures for holding polarizing filters were machined and assembled to be rotated. Light box, which include four incandescent lamps and two sodium-vapor lamps, was made. In order to proof the function of the newly built polariscope, Tardy compensation test was applied to a rectangular shaped specimen made of poly-carbonate material (PSM1). The error of the fringe constant, which was measured by the newly built polariscope, was within 4.4 percent compared to the standard value of this material. It is possible to make a good quality of polariscope if accurate polarizing filters will be used.

  • In this paper, we reduced the optical noise interference using polarizers in a visible light communication system. In a transmitter, two light-emitting diodes(LEDs) are modulated synchronously by the original and the reversed signals of the transmitted data, and the two LED lights are radiated through orthogonal polarizers. In a receiver, two optical signals are detected through orthogonal polarizers and differentially amplified to remove the optical noise. In an environment that noise light from a fluorescent lamp is much stronger than the signal, the receiver with orthogonal polarizers removed the 120 Hz noise, and synchronous light transmission of the original and the reversed signals using two LEDs reduced the illumination flickering to about one-eighth that using one LED.
