  • During laser irradiation, mechanically deformed cartilage undergoes a temperature dependent phase transformation resulting in accelerated stress relaxation. Clinically, laser-assisted cartilage reshaping may be used to recreate the underlying cartilaginous framework in structures such as ear, larynx, trachea, and nose. Therefore, research and identification of the biophysical transformations in cartilage accompanying laser heating are valuable to identify critical laser dosimetry and phase transformation of cartilage for many clinical applications. quasi-elastic light scattering was investigated using Ho : YAG laser $(\lambda=2.12{\mu}m\;;\;t_p\sim450{\mu}s)$ and Nd:YAG Laser $(\lambda=1.32{\mu}m\;;\;t_p\sim700{\mu}s)$ for heating sources and He : Ne $(\lambda=632.8nm)$ laser, high-power diode pumped laser $(\lambda=532nm)$, and Ti : $Al_2O_3$ femtosecond laser $(\lambda=850nm)$ for light scattering sources. A spectrometer and infrared radiometric sensor were used to monitor the backscattered light spectrum and transient temperature changes from cartilage following laser irradiation. Analysis of the optical, thermal, and quasi-elastic light scattering properties may indicate internal dynamics of proteoglycan movement within the cartilage framework during laser irradiation.

  • This study deals with the light environments and weather conditions affecting to the night illuminance over the Korean peninsula. The experiment was executed to analyze the effects on the illuminance at separate sites(Gyeryong and Pilseung) considering the different light environments. The analysis was applied to illuminance measurement from the lightmeter, which was developed for the IYA(International Year of Astronomy) 2009, in order to observe the illuminance of areal networks. The weather observations, such as the cloud cover and visibility, were used to understand the quantitative influence of the illuminance to the selected sites. The results show that the illuminance measurements are significantly different from data of the operational illuminance prediction model which simply applies extinction effect for the illuminance. It shows that these differences are caused by the light environments and weather conditions for each site. Therefore, it can be confirmed that the night illuminance is the output of interaction with the characteristics of light for luminous sources.

  • Bruise caused by damages through physical compression and suction is one of evidences that can prove abuse or assault. It is essential for taking photography to prove a crime. Some studies about the Infrared (IR) light source have limitations that only one IR light source and one barrier filter were used. To find the best combination of filters and IR light sources, we produced suction bruise artificially and used three IR light sources and five barrier filters. Consequently, we found that the best combination is using a tungsten lamp and Kodak Wratten #18A barrier filter.

  • The radiation characteristics and economic efficiency of high - luminance light - emitting diodes (LEDs), a metal halide lamp, and a halogen lamp were studied to evaluate their potential as an energy-saving light source for fishing lamps. The wavelengths at which irradiance was maximum were 709, 613, 473, 501, 525, 465, 578, and 973 nm for red, orange, blue, peacock blue, green, and white LEDs, the metal halide lamp, and the halogen lamp, respectively. If the irradiance characteristics at 300-1,100 nm wavelengths are set as 100%, the irradiance rates at 381-780 nm were 99-78%, 82%, and 24% for the LEDs, metal halide lamp, and halogen lamp, respectively. The economic efficiency was superior in the order metal halide lamp, halogen lamp, peacock blue LED, and blue LED at 381-780 nm and metal halide lamp, peacock blue LED, blue LED, and halogen lamp at 480-520 nm. Based on the radiation characteristics and economic efficiency evaluated at 480-520 nm, the blue and peacock blue LED light sources can be used as energy-saving light sources for fishing lamps.

  • In this study, mercury was removed by $TiO_2$ using fluorescent light and sunlight, instead of UV lamps. A reactor was specially designed to increase the $TiO_2's$ exposure to the light source and to make the rotational speed constant. The contacting surface area between mercury and adsorbents was increased by packing the adsorption bed with mixture of $TiO_2$ and glass beads. The mercury removal efficiency was more than 99% under all light sources tested in this study. The mercury removal efficiency was more than 99% under the fluorescent light or sunlight which is harmless and cheap or free.

  • We show the results of a time series analysis of the long-term light curves of four blazars. 3C 279, 3C 345, 3C 446, and BL Lacertae. We used densely sampled light curves spanning 32 years at three frequency bands (4.8, 8, 14.5 GHz), provided by the University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory monitoring program. The spectral indices of our sources are mostly flat or inverted (-0.5 < ${\alpha}$ < 0), which is consistent with optically thick emission. Strong variability was seen in all light curves on various time scales. From the analyses of time lags between the light curves from different frequency bands and the evolution of the spectral indices with time, we find that we can distinguish high-peaking flares and low-peaking flares according to the Valtaoja et al. classification. The periodograms (temporal power spectra) of the light curves are in good agreement with random-walk power-law noise without any indication of (quasi-)periodic variability. We note that random-walk noise light curves can originate from multiple shocks in jets. The fact that all our sources are in agreement with being random-walk noise emitters at radio wavelengths suggests that such behavior is a general property of blazars. We are going to generalize our approach by applying our methodology to a much larger blazar sample in the near future.

  • Color is an important factor in dental esthetics. Application of natural tooth color will not fail to produce pleasing results. But a standardized method of shade matching has not been adopted. If we are to overcome the color matching problem in dentistry, an understanding of the nature of color and light is essential. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different light sources and different background colors on the ability of observers to correctly match shades of artifical teeth. And observation was made to determine if the time spent in making a shade match was a factor in the correctness of the response. A test method was devised and 50 individuals made observations which were recorded and analyzed. $X^2$-test gave results indicating that the time factor had no effect on the response made. An analysis of variance showed the following effects significant at the five percent level; (1) light source (2) background color (3) subject. The following conclusions can be drawn from this study; (1) The time spent in making shade selection is not a factor in the correctness of the selections. (2) The light source used is an important factor in matching tooth shade; and there is no significant difference between the light sources in shade matching. (3) Under the conditions of this study, the greatest accuracy in shade matching was obtained on the brown background.

  • Discomfort Glare from the artificial light sources is an important issue in assessment of lighting quality for healthy buildings. Glare, as a factor of the characteristics of brightness, which has been defined as the sensation produced by contrast and luminance within an entire field view, unfavorably influences the occupants who performs visual tasks. It may cause annoyance and discomfort by interruption of visibility. In the whole visual field, glare can be determined by effects of the position, the luminance and the size of the light source and brightness of the surroundings. Therefore, experimental equipment is required to maintain a constant visual lighting environment. Recent studies have been developed and used the instrument for glare sensation evaluation but the instruments showed some difficulties to verify the correlation of glare indicators. The instrument have been developed with reference to former studies. It is called the Glare Tester. This is consist of 2[m]-diameter vertical dome screen painted with white flat paint, and light sources installed inside the screen. These light sources can provide various range of brightness at any inner surface of the screen. 2 Glare light sources can provide the value of luminance within the range of $0{\sim}150,000[cd/m^2]$. Moreover, 12 light sources are used for background luminance and it can perform the value of luminance within the range of $0{\sim}350[cd/m^2]$. Several experiments have been conducted using this Glare Tester to evaluate the range of the visibility, the values of BCD and the glare sensation in lower and upper visual field.
