  • Background: Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge has been used in traditional medicine. The type of light source has an effect on the growth properties and composition of functional compounds in plants. In this study, we analyzed the effects of different artificial light sources on the growth characteristics as well as antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of S. miltiorrhiza. Methods and Results: Seedlings of S. miltiorrhiza were grown under various artificial light sources, including fluorescent light (FL), light emitting diode (LED), and microwave electrodeless light (MEL), for 8 weeks. Growth characteristics were the best in plants treated with MEL. DPPH scavenging activity of the shoot was more pronounced with the FL treatments, while the roots were more active in plants grown under single wavelength lights (i.e., blue and red LEDs). Among the different light source treatments, the blue LED resulted in a higher total phenolic content in the plants. Furthermore, growing plants growth under the red LED enhanced their total flavonoid content. Notably, the antimicrobial properties of plants varied significantly between light source treatments in this study. Except for E. coli, all the tested microorganisms were susceptible to the plant extracts. Conclusions: The type of light source may be an important parameter for the enhancement of plant growth and functional compounds in S. miltiorrhiza.

  • This paper presents a noble optical access system using shared laser and LED light sources, which is based on WDM-PON technologies. This system adopts an external modulation of the shared laser sources for high-speed downstream and a direct modulation of the LED sources for low-speed upstream. To split or combine the transmission channels, AWG(Arrayed Wave-guide Grating) devices are used in the optical cable section. The proposed system is attractive for low cost implementation. The laser light sources can share the optical carriers in the downstream scheme. Also, in upstream, the LED sources can afford to make simple of the circuits for controlling light source and of standardization for ONU(Optical Network Unit). The feasibility of the proposed system is demonstrated by several experiments. Our results show that the system operates well at 2.SGbps for downstream and up to 622.08Mbps for upstream.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of light sources and explant types on in vitro shoot multiplication and rooting of a rare and endangered plant Abeliophyllum distichum. Both apical buds and axillary buds were used as explants under 4 different light sources, cool white florescent light (F), 100% blue light-emitting diode (LED) (B), 50% blue and 50% red LED mixture (BR), and 100% red LED (R). Clear difference was observed in terms of shoot proliferation by light sources types but not by position-dependent explant types. Multiple shoot induction rates were enhanced under both B and BR light sources. Spontaneous rooting was induced in shoot induction medium under B light source. Both the rates of rooting and numbers of roots per explant were higher in apical bud explants compared to axillary bud explants. Interestingly R light source stimulated shoot elongation but inhibited root development. Therefore, our results suggest that the use of apical bud explants under B or BR light sources is suitable for in vitro micropropagation of a rare and endangered plant species, Abeliophyllum distichum.

  • LED is expected as an environmentally friendly light source with its good reliability and long lifetime. A few ten mW white LED can substitute for the indicator light source, and it is required to study several watt multi-chip semiconductor light sources in order to replace the light sources for general illumination such as incandescent lights and fluorescent lamps. Since the optical technology used for several mW white LED light source uses only 30% to 50% of the light, it is required to develop the design technology of optical system and lens to improve the efficiency more than 80% for insuring the high power of white LED. In this paper, we designed and fabricated new structure reflector to increase the efficiency.

  • The clinical performance of light polymerized composite resins is greatly influenced by the quality of the light curing unit used. Commonly used halogen light curing units(LCUs) have some specific drawbacks such as decreasing light output with time. To overcome this, the blue LED LCUs are newly developed and introduced. The purpose of this study was to observe the reaction kinetics and the degree of polymerization of composite resins when cured by different light sources and to evaluate the effectiveness of the blue LED LCUs compared with conventional halogen LCUs.(omitted)

  • In this study, the wear characteristics of five different dental composite resins cured by conventional halogen light and LED light sources were investigated. Five different dental composite resins of Surefil, Z100, Dyract AP, Fuji II LC and Compoglass were worn against a zirconia ceramic ball using a pin-on-disk type wear tester with 15 N contact force in a reciprocal sliding motion with sliding distance of 10 mm/cycle at 1Hz under the room temperature dry condition. The wear variations of dental composite resins were linearly increased as the number of cycles increased. It was observed that the wear resistances of these specimens were in the order of Dyract AP > Surefil > Compoglass > Z100 > Fuji II LC. On the morphological observations by SEM, the large crack formation on the sliding track of Fuji II LC specimen was the greatest among all resin composites. Dyract AP showed the least wear with few surface damage. There is no significant difference in wear performance between conventional halogen light curing and light emitting diodes curing sources. It indicates that a light emitting diodes (LED) source can replace a halogen light source as a curing unit for composite resin restorations.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the quality of soybean sprouts grown under three different sources of light. The soybean was germinated under light through blue (251 ux), red (751 ux) and white (50 to 200 lux) polyethylene films at 25$^{\circ}C$ for 10hr./day. Vitamin C, chlorophyll, cellulose and total protein contents were determined and texture was evaluated by tasting soybean sprouts soup. protein pattern in the soybean sprouts were investigated using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Vitamin C, chlorophyll and cellulose contents were increased by white light intensity. The texture of the sprouts grown under white light (50 lux, 100 lux) was better than darkness, but fought under 200 lux. Vitamin C contents of soybean sprouts grown under various sources of light (in order of light : blue > white > red) were higher than theses of ones grown in the darkness. Biosynthesis of chlorophyll was not correlated to Vitamin C content. Total protein contents of cotyledon was not changed significantly under light irradiation. But the soybean sprouts grown under different quality of light, hypocotyl was higher than those grown darkness. (37% and 20% higher for blue light and white light) Densitometric tracing of disc polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic patterns showed that protein of hypocotyl under white light had more high molecular weight protein.

  • It is important issue to increase the efficiency of visibility operations in rendering since the most of rendering time is spent for performing visibility operations. In this paper, we present light buffers of area light sources, which provide efficient visibility operations from the sources. The light buffers are extended to support visibility operations not originated from the sources. We also explore their applications such as shadow generation, ray tracing and radiosity. Our experimental results show that the light buffers support more efficient visibility operations than the previously developed data structures including BSP trees, linear grids, and octrees.

  • Exhibitlon lighting design be done after due consideration of the photochemical reaction and heating effcts upon exposure to light In this study the balanced judgement is as follows. 'The most light-susceptible material should be illustrated less than 5O(lx](illumlnance-hours per year: 120,OOOlx.h)and the illuminance of moderately sensitive material is 200(lx] (illuminance hours per year: 480,OOOlx.h). Moreover to minimize damage the sources of light should not only contribute as little as heat possible but remove ultraviolt radiation by filters. Also the sources of light must have good color rendering and low color temperature.

  • Microalgae are independent organisms that perform photosynthesis and can alter the culture environment to increase accumulation of useful substances derived from microalgae. In this study, cell growth was measured by incubation for 39 days using MBBM, Neo medium, and seven light sources, which is the main factor affecting cell growth of microalgae S. obliquus. In the case of S. oliquus, which grew in MBBM and Neo medium, cell growth was highest under fluorescent light sources and Red2 LED (R660) light sources, and cell growth was lowest under Infra Red LED (R741) light sources. The average cell growth rate was 17.7% for MBBM and 15.4% for Neo. Comparing the effects of dry cell weight of Neo medium containing nutrients on the production of aquatic plants, MBBM and dry cell weight of Neo resulted in higher cell growth than Neo medium under all LED light sources except for Blue LED (B450). This proves that MBBM is more suitable for increasing the cell growth of microalgae than Neo medium and confirms that light source selection is important in the production of useful materials through mass cultivation of microalgae in the future.
