Several ways of curing are being tried to improve material's properties and reduce marginal gap. However, all are considering about the pattern of light intensity. It was noted from the preliminary study the change of light wavelength from filter changing may give an impact on material's property and microleakage. The object of this study was to verify the effect of filters with various wavelength width on the microhardness and microleakage of composite resin ; hybrid type of DenFil and submicron hybrid type of Esthet X. Composite resins were cured using 3 kinds of filter; narrow-banded(465-475 nm), mid-banded(430-470 nm), wide-banded(400-500 nm). After the estimation of microhardness. degree of dye penetration and the maximum gap from SEM evaluation were done between 4 groups that showed no difference in microhardness value of the lower surface . The results were as follows : 1 Adequate microhardness could not be gained with a narrow-banded filter irrespective of curing time. At the upper surface, DenFil should be polymerized with middle or wide-banded filter for 20 seconds at least, while Esthet X be col$.$ed with middle or wide-banded filter for 30 seconds at least to get simitar hardness value to control group. 2. There was little dye penetration in enamel margin, but all dentin margins skewed much more dye penetration irrespective of curing conditions. Although there was no statistical difference, groups cured with mid-banded filter for 40 seconds and with wide-width filter for 20 seconds showed relatively less dye penetration. 3. It was revealed from the SEM examination that group cured with wide-banded filter had the smallest gap without statistical significance. Spearman's rho test showed that the correlation between the results of dye penetration and SEM examination was very low. From these results, it could be concluded that curing with wide-width filter would be better than the other techniques, even though the curing technique using mid-width filter seems to have its own unique advantage.

The objective of this study is to analyze the shear bond strength of orthodontic buttons according to light tip distance and optic fiber diameter when an extended optic fiber was applied to the tip of a curing light unit. In this study, 315 extracted premolar teeth were divided into 3 groups. Orthodontic buttons were attached using no optic fibers (Group I), 3.0 mm diameter optic fibers (Group II), or 5.0 mm diameter optic fibers (Group III). Each group was divided into subgroups A - C (5.0, 10.0, and 15.0 mm light tip distance), respectively. Shear bond strength was then measured while varying the light tip distance. In group I, shear bond strength significantly decreased as the light tip distance increased. When the shear bond strength was evaluated according to the optic fiber diameter, no statistical significance was observed in group of 5.0 mm light tip distance. Compared with group IB, group IIIB showed significantly greater shear bond strength. Compared with group IC, all groups using 3.0 or 5.0 mm diameter optic fibers showed significantly greater shear bond strength. Therefore, when a curing light unit has poor accessibility, optic fibers with a large diameter should be considered.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of several light curing methods and several adhesives on the microleakage of composite resin restorations in primary teeth. Materials and methods : In 150 extracted human primary anterior teeth, O-shaped cavities were prepared in the labial surface ; the cavity diameter and depth were 1.6mm. The cavities were filled with light-activated composite resin, Compoglass. Four kinds of adhesives were used. Each filling materials were polymerized with three light cure methods. The restorations were polished using Sof-Lex discs(3M Co., USA). The samples were thermocycled 1,000 times between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ with a 1-minute dwell time. Then, they were immersed in a 2% methylene blue solution(pH 7) for 12hours. Subsequently they were sectioned labio-lingually through the center of the restoration with a diamond saw at low speed with a water coolant, and evaluated by stereomicroscopy. Microleakage analyses were done, using scores from 0 to 4. Results : Results showed the least microleakage in Compoglass group(P<0.05). There were less microleakage in SBMP group among the adhesive groups, but no significant difference was observed(P>0.05). And there were no significant differences among the groups depending on curing methods(P>0.05).
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to observe the reaction kinetics and the degree of polymerization of composite resins when cured by different light sources and to evaluate the effectiveness of the blue Light Emitting Diode Light Curing Units (LED LCUs) compared with conventional halogen LCUs. Materials and Methods: First, thermal analysis was performed by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The LED LCU (Elipar Freelight, $320{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$) and the conventional halogen LCU (XL3000, $400{\;}mV/\textrm{cm}^2$) were used in this study for curing three composite resins (SureFil, Z-250 and AEliteFLO). Second. the degree of conversion was obtained in the composite resins cured according to the above curing mode with a FTIR. Third, the measurements of depth of cure were carried out in accordance with ISO 4049 standards. Statistical analysis was performed by two-way ANOVA test at 95% levels of confidence and Duncan's procedure for multiple comparisons. Results: The heat of cure was not statistically different among the LCUs (p > 0.05). The composites cured by the LED (Exp) LCUs were statistically more slowly polymerized than by the halogen LCU and the LED (Std) LCU (p < 0.05). The composite resin groups cured by the LED (Exp) LCUs had significantly greater degree of conversion value than by the halogen LCU and the LED (Std) LCU (p =0.0002). The composite resin groups cured by the LED (Std) LCUs showed significantly greater depth of cure value than by the halogen LCU and the LED (Exp) LCU (p < 0.05).
The objective of this study was to compare dentin shear bond strength (DSBS) of dentin bonding agents (DBAs) cured with a plasma arc (PAC) light curing unit (LCU) and those cured with a light emitting diode (LED) LCU. Optical properties were also analyzed for Elipar freelight 2 (3M ESPE); LED LCU, Apollo 95E (DMT Systems); PAC LCU and VIP Junior (Bisco); Halogen LCU. The DBAs used for DSBS test were Scotchbond Multipurpose (3M ESPE), Singlebond 2 (3M ESPE) and Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray). After DSBS testing, fractured specimens were analyzed for failure modes with SEM. The total irradiance and irradiance between 450 nm and 490 nm of the LCUs were different. LED LCU showed narrow spectral distribution around its peak at 462 nm whereas PAC and Halogen LCU showed a broad spectrum. There were no significant differences in mean shear bond strength among different LCUs (P > 0.05) but were significant differences among different DBAs (P < 0.001).

Adequate polymerization is a crucial factor in obtaining optimal physical properties and clinical performance of resin composite restorative materials. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of shade and depth on dental composite resin polymerized with plasma arc curing unit employing FTIR and microhardness. From this experiment, the following results were obtained : 1. The light transmission and microhardness by mode 6 in plasma arc curing were similar to by 20 secs in halogen light curing. 2. The experimental groups of A1, A2, A3, A3.5 were not signifcant difference to light transmission and microhardness on surface and 2mm depth, but were significant difference on 3mm and 4mm depth. Especially light transmission and microhardness were small in darker shade and deeper thickness. 3. Compared with depth cure, uncured monomer amount increased at more than 2mm depth. 4. The light transmission by FTIR and polymerization by microhardness were significant corelation.

The purpose of this study was to compare the polymerization shrinkage of several filling methods using strain gauges. In this study, a light-emitting diode(LED) curing unit(Elipar Freeligh2, 3M EPSE, USA) and plasma arc lamp(PAL) curing unit(Flipo, LOKKI, France) were used for curing, Filtek $Z350^{TM}$(3M EPSE, USA) composite resin was used for the cavity filling. Sixty permanent bicuspid teeth, that were extracted for orthodontic treatment, were studied. The cavities were prepared on the occlusal surface and were filled using the following methods : 1) bulk filling, 2) parallel filling, 3) oblique filling The strain was recorded on the buccal, lingual, mesial and distal surfaces and the strain values were computed into stress values. The shear bond strength of each filling method was tested using a Micro Universal Testing machine. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. In the strain changes, all LED and PAL curing groups showed an increase on the buccal surface and a slow decrease as time elapsed. 2. In the strain changes of the mesial and distal surfaces, the decreases and increases were shown repeatedly and reduced as time elapsed. 3. There were no significant statistical strain changes among filling methods in the LED or PAL curing groups. 4. There were significant statistical strain changes between the LED and PAL curing groups on the buccal surface(p<0.05). 5. From the shear bond strength results, in the LED curing group, filling method 3 showed lower surface stress than filling method 1 and 2(p<0.05). In the PAL curing group, there were no significant statistical strain changes between each filling method. 6. The surface stress of each group was lower than the shear bond strength.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marginal adaptation of Class V resin restorations by the filling techniques. The cavities were filled with Heliosit$^{(R)}$ light curing composite resin system in accordance with the following three filling techniques - bulk-pack placement technique, apical to occlusal layering placement technique, and buccolingual layering placement technique. And the interface between the restoration and the tooth structure was observed with scanning electron microscope. The following results were obtained. 1. Marginal adaptation of enamel showed excellent irrespective of the filling techniques. 2. Marginal leakage of dentin was observed irrespective of the filling techniques. 3. No difference of marginal adaptation according to the filling techniques was observed in light curing composite resin.
One disadvantage of Glass Ionomer Cement Restoration is the difficulty in polishing. To find the appropriate polishing method, we polished the surface of Glass Ionomer Cement Restorations by 11 combination methods serially using disks shared with large-small particles and evaluated the polishing process in terms of surface roughness, surface roughness curve, and SEM findings. In addition, a visible light curing type bonding material was applied to evaluate the possible improvement in surface properties. The following results were obtained. 1. The disk surface of Glass Ionomer Cement was polished serially by disks with superfine particles, but it didn't become smooth. 2. The surface of Microfilled Composite resin became smoother as using a disk with finer particles. 3. When a visible light curing type bonding material was applied in finishing process, the surface of Glass Ionomer Cement became smooth as much as the applied matrix.
