  • An OSV (Offshore Support Vessel) is being used to install a structure which is laid on its deck or an adjacent transport barge by lifting off the structure with its own crane, lifting in the air, crossing splash zone, deeply submerging, and lastly landing it. There are some major considerations during these operations. Especially, when lifting off the structure, if operating conditions such as ocean environmental loads and lifting off velocity are not suitable, the collision can be occurred due to the relative motion between the structure and the OSV or the transport barge. To solve this problem, this study performs the physics-based simulation of the lifting off step while the OSV installs the structure. The simulation includes the calculation of dynamic responses of the OSV and the structure, including the collision detection between the transport barge and the structure. To check the applicability of the physics-based simulation, it is applied to a problem of the lifting off step by varying the ocean environmental loads and the lifting off velocity. As a result, it is confirmed that the operability of the lifting off step are affected by the conditions.

  • Though an excavator is classified as an equipment utilizing a shovel in earthworks, it has been frequently used in lifting work. In this view, lifting capacity is classified as the main functions of the excavator. Thus, its accurate functions need to be provided. However, in domestic conditions, the necessity for the functions of lifting capacity are not perceived. This study shows 1) Many researches about lifting-work of excavators abroad are used as basic data necessary for domestic introduction. 2) For domestic excavators without the information of lifting-work, methodologies of lifting-work available are suggested and reviewed. 3)Lifting zones are divided into safety and caution lifting zones. The information on lifting capacity and lifting zones will be able to used as objective and substantive bases to operational planning and safety management.

  • Dropped objects are among the top ten causes of fatalities and serious injuries in the oil and gas industry (DORIS, 2016). Objects may accidentally fall down from platforms or vessels during lifting or any other offshore operation. Proper planning of lifting operations requires the knowledge of the risk-free zone on the sea bed to protect underwater structures and equipment. To this end a three-dimensional (3D) theory of dynamic motion of dropped cylindrical object is expanded to also consider ocean currents. The expanded theory is integrated into the authors' Dropped Objects Simulator (DROBS). DROBS is utilized to simulate the trajectories of dropped cylinders falling through uniform currents originating from different directions (incoming angle at $0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$, and $270^{\circ}$). It is found that trajectories and landing points of dropped cylinders are greatly influenced by the direction of current. The initial conditions after the cylinders have fallen into the water are treated as random variables. It is assumed that the corresponding parameters orientation angle, translational velocity, and rotational velocity follow normal distributions. The paper presents results of DROBS simulations for the case of a dropped cylinder with initial drop angle at $60^{\circ}$ through air-water columns without current. Then the Monte Carlo simulations are used for predicting the landing point distributions of dropped cylinders with varying drop angles under current. The resulting landing point distribution plots may be used to identify risk free zones for offshore lifting operations.

  • The planning for material lifting operations is one of the key processes in high-rise building construction. Several previous studies have used rough calculations by referring to existing practices or establishing a target value for lifting cycle time or operating rate. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose a material lifting process optimization method for reducing the lifting cycle time and increasing the operating rate. In this study, we improve the cyclic operation network (CYCLONE) modeling method that considers the duration and zone information of each work task. This method can be used to hand over work tasks to another crew group in the work process. According to this methodology, this study optimizes the material lifting process, performs a sensitivity analysis, and evaluates the field applicability of the proposed material lifting process optimization method. Therefore, the optimized process was then applied to a high-rise building construction site. The lifting work process time and operating rate for the simulated as - is lifting process data, optimized process data, and field application result data were compared for each lifting height. From this comparison, the effectiveness of the optimization methodology was confirmed.

  • In this study, the difference of flame stability zone for natural gases from producing districts was studied experimentally using a new type of flame stability diagram. The similarity of stable flame zone between a domestic appliance and an interchangeability test(IT) burner is also examined. As a result, the stable flame zones expressed by limits curves of flame lifting and yellow tipping show the similar results in a domestic gas range and IT burner. Furthermore, IT burner can reproduce the flash back phenomena and show the distinct difference of fuel type as the burner diameter is increased. To suggest the new type of flame stability diagram in the respect of fuel interchangeability, the air flowrate and Wobbe fuel flowrate were adopted as axis coordinates. It can be identified that the new diagram can provide the useful information on the difference of flame stability zone, heat input rate and air-fuel ratio when a fuel is altered to other fuels under the identical operating conditions. Finally, the stable flame zones for natural gas of 6 type are compared, and the detailed information to use as the interchangeability fuels of standard natural gas is provided using the new type of flame stability diagram.

  • Most of studies on PC method aim at the structural analysis and development of PC members, and studies on the construction management aspect are insufficient. Therefore, this study tries to investigate 'hallow PC column composite method(HPC composite method)' from the viewpoint of construction management and analyze the construction cost of the composite method. On the assumption that each comparative method was applied to the zone, the difference in construction cost between the two methods was analyzed. As a result, HPC composite method increased the initial investment cost because of its factor technology, but reduced transport cost, lifting cost, and installation cost through lightweight columns. This study analyzed only the difference in construction cost of HPC composite method so that it has the limitation in evaluating its economy. Therefore, to evaluate the economy of HPC composite method, it is considered to research more the construction cost of HPC composite method.

  • About 90% of groundwater wells in Jeju Island are reported to be under the threat of contamination by infiltration of the surface pollutants. Most of those wells have improperly grouted annulus which is an empty space between the well and the inner casing. As a remedy to this problem, some of the wells were re-grouted by filling the annulus with cement without lifting an inner casing. In order to evaluate whether this method is appropriate for the geological structure of Jeju Island, two wells (W1 and W2) were selected and this method was applied. The water holding capacity did not decrease while the nitrate levels decreased from 16.8 and 20.2 to 6.8 and 13.8 mg/L in W1 and W2, respectively. The higher nitrate level in W2 is deemed to be influenced by the livestock farms located in the upper area of the well. In addition, transmissivity of the vedose zone was higher in W2 than W1, potentially facilitating the transport of nitrate to the groundwater. The overall result of this study suggests re-grouting of wells for the purpose of protecting water quality of goundwater should take into account geological structure of vadose zone as well as appropriate source control of the contaminants.
