  • In this paper, we introduce the results of the development of a care robot for the safe lifting and transportation of bedridden patients with difficulty moving by themselves, especially, in medical facilities. The purpose of the developed patient transfer robot is to improve the convenience of care givers and enhance the safety and comfort of care recipients by facilitating patient lifting and patient transfer tasks by applying robot technology. In order to implement the lifting function, a hoist was designed and developed, and a sway control and rollover warning system were included in the hoist module as product differentiators. In addition, in terms of implementing the transfer function, an omnidirectional movement mechanism to improve operability in confined spaces and an active safety system to prevent collisions were developed. The function of the developed patient transfer robot was verified through performance evaluation by an authorized testing agency.

  • In this paper, we propose motion estimation and compensation using Low-Band-Shift(LBS) with Integer Lifting Shift property. To overcome shift-variant property on wavelet coefficients, the LBS was previously proposed. This method which is applied to reference frame in video coding technique has superior performance in terms of rate-distortion characteristic. However, this method needs more memory and computational complexity. For the enhancement of those disadvantages, we propose motion estimation using Low-Band-Shift with Integer Lifting. The Integer Lifting implementation gives us good efficiency of calculation and storage.

  • Various lifting slings are used in domestic industrial sites depending on the purpose, form, and environment. Each sling has its characteristics, and safe lifting work is possible when its performance meets the regulations. Therefore, this study analyzed domestic and foreign regulations and guidelines related to chain slings. It identified significant problems by analyzing the chain-sling-related disaster cases. The current status of chain slings used by various industries and the ways to improve chain sling safety were studied. The major chain sling issues were: 1) employing improper components to chains, 2) having different safety coefficients between the regulation and industrial standards, and 3) using chains unsuitable for lifting purposes. Based on these issues, the following measures were proposed to improve chain sling work safety: 1) revise the safety coefficient requirements under the Regulations on Occupational Safety and Health Standards, 2) disseminate specialized sling courses, and 3) strengthen on-site chain slings-related training. In the future, this study is expected to minimize chain use mistakes by unifying the safety coefficient related to chain slings and recognizing the importance of correctly selecting components employed in the chain.

  • We show the design of fast invertible block transforms that can replace the DCT in future wireless and portable computing application. This is called binDCT. In binDCT, both the forward and the inverse transforms can be implemented using only binary shift and addition operation. And the binDCT inherits all desirable DCT characteristics such as high coding gain, no DC leakage, symmetric basis functions, and recursive construction. The binDCT also inherits all lifting properties such as fast implementations, invertible integer-to-integer mapping, in-place computation. Thus, this method has advantage of fast implementation for complex DCT calculations. In this paper, we present computation costs and performance analysis between DCT and binDCT using Shapiro's EZW.

  • With the sharp increase of the oil price, the issue of the energy saving requires even higher propulsive efficiency of the propellers. Traditionally the propellers have been designed with the criteria such as that of Lerbs optimum based on the lifting line theory and the empirical formulae of Lerbs and van Manen giving relations of the wake pitch with the wake non-uniformity. With the aid of the high speed computer, it is now possible to apply the time-consuming iterative approaches for the solution of the lifting surface problems. In this paper we formulate the variational problem to optimize the efficiency of the propeller operating in the given ship wake using the lifting surface method. The variational formulation relating the spanwise circulation distribution with the propulsive efficiency to be maximized is however non-linear in circulation distribution functions, thus the iterative method is applied to the quasi-linearized equations. The blade shape design also requires the iterative procedures, because the shape of the blade which is represented by the lifting surface is unknown a priori. The numerical code was validated with the DTNSRDC propeller 4119 which is well-known to be optimum in uniform inflow condition. In addition existing (well-designed) commercial propellers were selected and compared with the results of the open water tests and the self-propulsion tests.

  • This paper presents some improvements on VLSI implementation of lifting-based 9/7 wavelet transform by optimization hardware multiplication. The proposed solution requires less logic area and power consumption without performance loss compared to previous wavelet filter structure based on lifting scheme. This paper proposes a better approach to the hardware implementation using Lefevre algorithm based on extensions of Pattern search methods. To compare the proposed structure to the previous solutions on full multiplier blocks, we implemented them using Verilog HDL. For a hardware implementation of the two solutions, the logical synthesis on 0.18 um standard cells technology show that area, maximum delay and power consumption of the proposed architecture can be reduced up to 51%, 43% and 30%, respectively, compared to previous solutions for a 200 MHz target clock frequency. Our evaluation show that when design VLSI chip of lifting-based 9/7 wavelet filter, our solution is better suited for standard-cell application-specific integrated circuits than prior works on complete multiplier blocks.

  • This paper presents design methods of a fuzzy controller and an operator model for a wire-driven heavy material lifting system helping human workers. The wire-driven heavy material lifting system is a kind of human-assistive systems in which a human is involved in the control loop. Thus, human's control characteristics and requirement of reducing worker's force to lift a heavy material are considered in the design process of the proposed fuzzy controller. An automatic weight measurement algorithm during the early stage of lifting is also introduced. Finally, the effectiveness and performance of the proposed system are proved by experiments.

  • In this paper, we proposed an efficient hardware architecture of line-based lifting algorithm for Motion JPEG2000. We proposed a new architecture of a lifting-based filtering cell which has an optimized and simplified structure. It was implemented in a hardware accommodating both (9,7) and (5,4) filter. Since the output rate is linearly proportional to the input rate, one can obtain the high throughput through parallel operation simply by adding the hardware units. It was implemented into both of ASIC and FPGA The 0.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS library from Samsung was used for ASIC and Altera was the target for FRGA. In ASIC, the proposed architecture used 41,592 gates for the lifting arithmetic and 128 Kbit memory. For FPGA it used 6,520 LEs(Logic Elements) and 128 ESBs(Embedded System Blocks). The implementations were stably operated in the clock frequency of 128MHz and 52MHz, respectively.

  • Current trends in propeller design have led to the need for extremely complex blade shapes, which place great demands on the accuracy of design and analysis methods. This paper presents a new proposal for improving the prediction of propeller performance with a vortex lattice method using the lifting surface theory. The paper presents a review of the theory and a description of the numerical methods employed. For 8 different propellers, the open water characteristics are calculated and compared with experimental data. The results are in good agreement in the region of a high advanced velocity, but there are differences in the other case. We have corrected the parameters for the trailing wake modeling in this paper, and repeated the calculation. The new calculation results are more in agreement with the experimental data.

  • The Wavelet Transform has been applied in mathematics and computer sciences. Numerous studies have proven its advantages in image processing and data compression, and have made it a basic encoding technique in data compression standards like JPEG2000 and MPEG-4. Software implementations of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) appears to be the performance bottleneck in real-time systems in terms of performance. And hardware implementations are not flexible. Therefore, FPGA implementations of the DWT has been a topic of recent research. The goal of this thesis is to investigate of FPGA implementations of the DWT Processor for image compression applications. The DWT processor design is based on the Lifting Based Wavelet Transform Scheme, which is a fast implementation of the DWT The design uses various techniques. The DWT Processor was simulated and implemented in a FLEX FPGA platform of Altera
