  • The maximum lifetime data aggregation problem is to maximize the network lifetime as minimizing the transmission energy of all deployed nodes in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a simulated annealing algorithm to solve efficiently the maximum lifetime data aggregation problem on the basis of meta-heuristic approach in wireless sensor networks. In order to make a search more efficient, we propose a novel neighborhood generating method and a repair function of the proposed algorithm. We compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with other existing algorithms through some experiments in terms of the network lifetime and algorithm computation time. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient for the maximum lifetime data aggregation problem in wireless sensor networks.

  • Static and cyclic fatigue tests were carried out for alumina specimen to study the statistical analyses (normal, lognormal and Weibull distribution) of fatigue lifetime data and nominal initial crack length data. Fatigue lifetime data followed Weibull distribution better than normal or lognormal distribution, for the shape parameter of the notched specimen was larger than that of the unnotched specimen. The nominal initial crack length data obtained from fatigue lifetime followed the lognormal and Weibull distribution better than normal distribution, for the coefficient of variation of the unnotched specimen was larger than that of the notched specimen, and shape parameter of unnotched specimen was smaller than that of the notched specimen.

  • The data gathering delay and the network lifetime are important indicators to measure the service quality of wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs). This study proposes a dynamically cluster head (CH) selection strategy and automatic scheduling scheme of collectors for prolonging the network lifetime and shorting data gathering delay in WSAN. First the monitoring region is equally divided into several subregions and each subregion dynamically selects a sensor node as CH. These can balance the energy consumption of sensor node thereby prolonging the network lifetime. Then a task allocation method based on genetic algorithm is proposed to uniformly assign tasks to actuators. Finally the trajectory of each actuator is optimized by ant colony optimization algorithm. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the results show that the method performs better to extend network lifetime while also reducing data delay.

  • A fuze detonator comprising star shells is an important device so that its failure usually leads to failure of the shells. In this paper, accelerated degradation tests of RD1333 (lead azide) using temperature stress were performed, and then degradation data of explosive power for the detonator were analyzed to predict the storage lifetime of detonator. Degradation data analysis to estimate the storage lifetime is based on a distribution-based degradation process. Statistical distribution parameters of explosive power degradation measures at each time were estimated for each temperature level, and then reliability of the detonator for each accelerated temperature level was estimated using both time-varying distribution parameters and critical level of explosive power. Arrhenius model was applied to estimate storage lifetime of the detonator under the field temperature condition. Accelerated distribution-based degradation analysis to estimate storage lifetime is explained in detail, and estimation results are compared to field data of storage lifetime in this paper.

  • Network coding (NC) is a promising technology that can improve available bandwidth and packet throughput in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Sliding window is an improved technology of NC, which is a supplement of TCP/IP technology and can improve data throughput and network lifetime on WSNs. This paper proposes a network coding-based maximum lifetime algorithm for sliding window in WSNs (NC-MLSW) which improves the throughput and network lifetime in WSN. The packets on the source node are sent on the WSNs. The intermediate node encodes the received original packet and forwards the newly encoded packet to the next node. Finally, the destination node decodes the received encoded data packet and recovers the original packet. The performance of the NC-MLSW algorithm is studied using NS2 simulation software and the network packet throughput, network lifetime and data packet loss rate were evaluated. The simulations experiment results show that the NC-MLSW algorithm can obviously improve the network packet throughput and network lifetime.

  • Kim and Kim (1997) developed a method of estimating the mean lifetime based on the augmented data after imputing censored observations. Assuming the linear relationship between lifetime and covariates, and then introducing the procedure of Buckley and James (1979) to estimate the mean lifetimes of censored observations, they proposed a mean lifetime estimator and its consistency under the regularity conditions. In this article, the Kim and Kim's estimator is compared with the estimator introduced by Gill (1983) through simulations under the various configurations. Also, their estimator is illustrated with two real data sets.

  • In this study, the characteristic lifetime of power facilities such as power transformers and GIS were investigated as the basis of power facility asset management. It is difficult to obtain the operation and failure data of the facilities in Korea. Therefore, the number of failures of the electric power facilities was calculated from the operation data and hazard rate shown in the overseas literatures, and the statistical analysis was performed using the Weibull distribution function. As a result of extracting and analyzing the data of the UK National Grid for power transformers, the characteristic lifetime (scale parameter) of 116.45 years was considered to be a very appropriate value for power transformer management and can be used as a comparative data of the analysis of the domestic transformers. As for the GIS, based on the Bays and Bay-Years data and the hazard rate according to the operation years of the 123kV GIS in Germany, it is found out that the characteristic lifetime of GIS is not so meaningful. It is necessary to decide a maintenance strategy and lifetime expectancy considering the characteristics of the design, materials and manufacturing process of GIS.

  • Wear leveling techniques have been studied to prolong the lifetime of NAND flash memory. Most of studies have used Program/Erase(P/E) cycles as wear index for wear leveling. Unfortunately, P/E cycles could not predict the real lifetime of NAND flash blocks. Therefore, these algorithms have the limited performance from prolonging the lifetime when applied to the SSD. In order to apply the real lifetime, wear leveling algorithms, which use raw Bit Error Rate(rBER) as wear index, have been studied in recent years. In this paper, we propose CrEWL(Cold data identification using raw Bit error rate in Wear Leveling), which uses rBER as wear index to apply to the real lifetime. The proposed wear leveling reduces an overhead of garbage collections by using HBSQ(Hot Block Sequence Queue) which identifies hot data. In order to reduce overhead of wear leveling, CrEWL does not perform wear leveling until rBER of the some blocks reaches a threshold value. We evaluate CrEWL in comparison with the previous studies under the traces having the different Hot/Cold rate, and the experimental results show that our wear leveling technique can reduce the overhead up to 41% and prolong the lifetime up to 72% compared with previous wear leveling techniques.

  • In this paper, we present a data dissemination protocol that guarantees energy-efficient data transmission and maximizes network lifetime. SPMS that outperforms the well-known protocol SPIN uses the shortest path to minimize the energy consumption. However, since it repeatedly uses the same path, maximizing the network lifetime is impossible. In this paper, we propose a protocol for data dissemination called the protocol Considering Between Energy and Distance (ConBED). It solves the network lifetime problem using the residual energy and the distance between nodes to determine a path for data dissemination. The simulation results show that ConBED guarantees energy-efficient transmission and increases the network lifetime by approximately 69% than that of SPMS.
