Proposal Protection Algorithm of Dendritic Lithium for Battery Second Use ESS (재사용 ESS를 위한 리튬 배터리 덴드라이트 보호 알고리즘 제안)

  • The lithium-ion battery pack of an electric vehicle (EV) deserves to be considered for an alternative use within smart-grid infrastructure. Despite the long automotive service life, EV batteries retain over 70~80% of their initial capacity. These battery packs must be managed for their reliability and safety. Therefore, a battery management system (BMS) should use specific algorithms to measure and estimate the status of the battery. Most importantly, the BMS of a grid-connected energy storage system (ESS) must ensure that the lithium-ion battery does not catch fire or explode due to an internal short from uncontrolled dendrite growth. In other words, the BMS of a lithium-ion battery pack should be capable of detecting the battery's status based on the electrochemical reaction continuously until the end of the battery's lifespan. In this paper, we propose a new protection algorithm for a dendritic lithium battery. The proposed algorithm has applied a parameter from battery pack aging results and has control power managing.

  • In this paper describes the process of designing a protection circuit against an open or short electronic ballast. An open electronic ballast creates high voltages in a regular period, which a lies voltage stress on switching devices. On the other hand, a shorted output generates excessive current, causing problems such as heat generation in the ballast and reduced lifespan of semiconductor devices. This study proposes a protection circuit consisting of TTL and passive devices to resolve the problems. The proposed protection circuit offers the benefits of low cost and high reliability. The proposed circuit was connected to an actual ballast to demonstrate its applicability.

  • 현재 인쇄전자 소자 생산을 위해 사용되고 있는 대부분의 그라비아 롤러는 미세 패턴의 보호와 인쇄 중 마찰에 대한 내구성을 향상시키기 위해 경질 크롬 도금 막이 사용되고 있다. 그러나 경질 크롬 도금 막의 경우 구현할 수 있는 경도(~1000 HV)와 이형성, 내마찰(마찰계수: ~ 0.6) 특성 등에 한계가 있다. 이러한 경질 크롬 도금이 적용된 그라비아 롤은 그 수명과 내구성, 구현할 수 있는 인쇄 품질 및 신뢰성 그리고 인쇄처리 속도 등에 있어 여러 문제가 있다. DLC(Diamond Like amorphous Carbon)는 낮은 마찰계수 값인 0.2 이하와 뛰어난 내마모성, 상대재료에 대한 이형성 등을 겸비한 표면강화 기술로 경질 크롬 도금막 대비 우수한 표면 경도(>1,800 HV) 특성을 갖으며, 합성된 DLC 코팅 막의 경우 정밀 인쇄 제판이 요구하는 표면거칠기를 구현할 가능성이 높다는 장점이 있다. 특히 실리콘이 첨가 된 Si-DLC의 경우 표면의 마찰계수를 0.1 이하까지 낮출 수 있는데 닥터블레이드 및 잉크, 인쇄 기재와의 마찰 훼손을 최소화시켜 그라비아 인쇄 롤의 수명을 향상시킬 수 있다. 또한 PECVD 공정을 이용하여 합성한 Si-DLC는 표면거칠기를 10nm 이하의 경면으로 구현할 수 있으며, 높은 접촉각에 의한 우수한 이형성을 통해 미세 패턴 내부에 전자잉크/페이스트가 잔류되는 현상을 억제할 수 있다. 이는 기존 경질 크롬 도금이 적용된 그라비아 롤에서 발생하는 패턴 내 잉크 잔류-고형화와 그에 의한 사용수명 단축현상을 현저히 개선시킬 수 있다.

Analysis of Polarization Properties of Optical Isolator for Fiber Laser

  • An isolator transmits light in the forward direction and blocks light from passing in the reverse direction. It is regarded an essential optical component in medical, industrial, and research lasers for blocking reflection beams that cause optical damage and noise. It is also used as a communicative light intensifier to expand the lifespan of devices and enhance transmission quality. This study analyzed the characteristics of the core components in the construction of a polarization-independent isolator, namely, the walk-off polarizer and the Faraday rotator. Measurement of the extinction ratio of the resultant walk-off polarizer revealed that the ratio between the vertical and horizontal rays was 1,050:1 with a laser output of 0.032 W and 1,010:1 with a laser output of 2.68 W, thus presenting ratios similar to 1,000:1. In addition, the walk-off polarizer and Faraday rotator constructed in this study were used to compare output changes according to changes in power of input light and to check the penetration ratio. Results from the study presented variations in output value according to changes in power of input light. However, the average penetration ratio remained relatively consistent (~81.4%).

The Least-Dirty-First CLOCK Replacement Policy for Phase-Change Memory based Swap Devices (PCM 기반 스왑 장치를 위한 클럭 기반 최소 쓰기 우선 교체 정책)

  • In this paper, we adopt PCM (phase-change memory) as a virtual memory swap device and present a new page replacement policy that considers the characteristics of PCM. Specifically, we aim to reduce the write traffic to PCM by considering the dirtiness of pages when making a replacement decision. The proposed policy tracks the dirtiness of a page at the granularity of a sub-page and replaces the least dirty page among the pages not recently used. Experimental results show that the proposed policy reduces the amount of data written to PCM by 22.9% on average and up to 73.7% compared to CLOCK. It also extends the lifespan of PCM by 49.0% and reduces the energy consumption of PCM by 3.0% on average.

  • Mature silkworms (MS) of Bombyx mori have enlarged silk glands, which are known to be enriched with various functional materials. A special steaming method has been developed for processing MS with enlarged silk glands edible, by which the MS have become a potential health supplement for improving the quality of life. Steamed and lyophilized MS powder (SMSP) has been strongly believed to have various unidentified beneficial effects for humans. Therefore, the purpose of this mini-review is to summarize the various health promoting functionalities of SMSP, which have been published in the paper so far. Firstly, SMSP increased healthspan as well as lifespan, locomotor ability, and resistance to Parkinson's disease by enhancing olfaction and mitochondrial activity in neurons. Secondly, SMSP increased resistance to carcinogens causing liver cancers, improved both acute and chronic liver function with alcohol metabolism, and prevented alcohol induced stomach ulcers. Thirdly, SMSP reduced UVB-induced skin pigmentations and melanogenesis. Taken together, SMSP can be regarded as a promising natural health product to increase incomes for sericultural farm households in Korea as well as global human health and welfare.

A Study on Improving the Enhanced Durability of Cylinder Liner according to Cavitation Influence of Combat Equipment Engine (전투장비 엔진의 캐비테이션 영향에 따른 실린더 라이너의 내구성 강화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • Cylinder liners used in diesel engines of combat equipment are prone to cavitation due to wet cooling. The damage caused by erosion and corrosion due to cavitation has a fatal effect on the performance and lifespan of a diesel engine. Therefore, a study was conducted to improve the durability of cylinder liners. Two surface treatment techniques were proposed: nitriding and chrome plating. It was observed that the amount of erosion on the surface of nitride-treated cylinder liners was high because the surface-treated part eroded due to its weak impact resistance against the bubble explosion generated by cavitation. In contrast, the chrome-plated cylinder liner had a lower amount of erosion among the specimens subjected to the accelerated test. These results verified that the resistance of chrome-plated liners against cavitation is high. Therefore, it can withstand the impact of bubble explosion. If the chrome plating thickness is set with reference to the KS standard, an exceptional durability of abrasion, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance can be obtained. If the thickness is set between 120~250㎛, it is expected that the durability of the cylinder liner can be improved. Although a recovery method for corroded cylinder liners is suggested, the proposed method has an inherent risk of crack generation. Therefore, further research is required to solve this problem.

  • A circular saw is an effective tool for cutting glass and carbon-fiber hybrid composites. This study investigated tool wear and cut quality when reusing saw blades. The carbide saws wear four times faster than the new ones, and polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is very resistant to tool wear, except at the end of its lifespan. The cut cross-section quality is affected by the blade type, tool wear, and spindle speed. Alternate top bevel (ATB)-type blades are suitable for cutting fiber-reinforced plastics, but triple-chip grind (TCG)-type blades are unsuitable because they cause fiber-pullout defects. Tool wear and low spindle speeds increase the occurrence of arc scratches, due to the rear saw blade. A microscopic examination showed that the burr, which is a mixture of fiber chips and epoxy matrix, was bonded on top, and glass-fiber delamination occurred on the bottom glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) surface.

  • The impact of gamma radiation on a commercial off the shelf microcontroller board has been investigated. Three different tests have been performed to ascertain the radiation tolerance of the device from a nuclear decommissioning deployment perspective. The first test analyses the effect of radiation on the output voltage of the on-board voltage regulator during irradiation. The second test evaluated the effect of gamma radiation on the voltage characteristics of analogue and digital inputs and outputs. The final test analyses the functionality of the microcontroller when using an external, shielded voltage regulator instead of the on-board voltage regulator. The results suggest that a series of latch-ups occurs in the microcontroller during irradiation, causing increased current drain which can damage the voltage regulator if it does not have short-circuit protection. The analogue to digital conversion functionality appears to be more sensitive to gamma radiation than digital and analogue output functionality. Using an external, shielded voltage regulator can prove beneficial when used for certain applications. The collected data suggests that detaching the voltage regulator can extend the lifespan of the platform up to approximately 350 Gy.

  • In this paper, many game companies seek better optimization and easy-to-apply logic to prolong the game's lifespan and provide a better game environment for users. Therefore, research will be showing the game's key input response method called RoS (Response of Speed). The purpose of the method is to simultaneously perform various motions with the character showing natural motion without errors even if the character's control key is duplicated. This method is for the developers so they can reduce bugs and development time in future game development. To be used with quickly generating game environments, the new method compares with the popular motion method, so which method is faster and can adapt to diverse games. The paper suggested that the Response of Speed method is a better method for optimizing frames and reducing the number of reacting seconds by showing a faster response and speed). With the method popularity of scrollers, many 2D cross-scroll games follow the formula of Dash, Shoot, Walk, Stay, and Crouch. With the development of game engines, it is becoming easier to implement them. Therefore, although the method presented in the above paper differs from the popular method, it is expected that there will be no great difficulty in applying it to the game because transplantation is easy. In the future, we plan to study to minimize the delay of each connection of the character motion so that the game can be optimized to best.
