Comparative Analysis of Track Ballast Structures based on Value Engineering (가치공학에 기초한 궤도도상구조의 비교분석)

  • The objective of this paper is to evaluate the proposed design by the Value Engineering (VE) analysis for the gravel ballast and the concrete ballast track structures. However, reliabilities about the VE analysis results based on Life-Cycle Cost(LCC) has not been fully benefited from VE implementation due to disregard of basic principles and lack of systematic performance measurement systems. In this paper, the VE analysis using the Delphi survey of professional group is proposed to decide reasonable determinants for investment and alternative design in construction project of railway tracks. Moreover, the efficiency of VE analysis is invested by an application of the developed methodology to track structures.

LCCA and LCA to Evaluate Feasibility for Introducing High-Efficiency Motors into Air Ventilation Systems of Public Facilities (고효율 전동기를 다중이용시설 환기설비에 도입하기 위한 LCCA 및 LCA 분석)

  • The amount of energy consumed in air ventilation systems of public facilities accounts for 40% of their total energy consumption. To reduce their energy consumption, applying variable speed operation controlled by an inverter with a high-efficiency motor is suggested. Since these methods require higher initial investment costs compared to the existing systems, economic evaluation should be conducted from a long-term perspective. While LCCA(Life Cycle Cost Analysis) model is useful to estimate net savings of alternatives that differs with respect to initial costs and operating costs, the environmental burdens are not considered. On the contrary LCA(Life Cycle Assesment) model is suitable to assess environmental impacts associated with the stages of a product's life but it does not consider costs. In this study, the high-efficient motors are introduced into the air ventilation system of a subway station and a comprehensive analysis on the economic and environmental impacts of the proposed method is conducted by using LCCA and LCA model.

A Study for the Improvement of the Life Cycle of Press Die using Wire Cut Discharge Machining (와이어 컷 방전가공 시 프레스금형 수명 향상에 대한 고찰)

  • Research into the selection of suitable materials and the development of fast processing methods for press die manufacturing is absolutely necessary to reduce the production time and cost. In particular, knowledge of its heat properties must be considered whendeveloping a long press die. Generally, as the main component materials of press dies, Cr, W low alloy tool steel, high carbon-high chrome steel, high speed steel, etc., are used as thetooling steel for the cold die. Machine tools and wire-cut electric discharge machining are mainly used for processing the press die parts. There are many differences in the machining time and life cycle of die parts depending on the machining process. The parts produced by milling and grinding have a high manufacturing time and cost with a long life cycle, while thosemade by milling and wire-cut discharge machining have areduced manufacturing time and cost,whereastheir die life cycle is reduced. Therefore, in this study, we will discuss amethod of improving the life cycle of the die parts by using heat treatment as a processing method that reduces the manufacturing time and cost. SEM, EDS analysis and the surface roughness analysis of the surface and center of the workpiece are used for analyzing the specimens produced by three machining methods, viz. milling - grinding, milling - wire cut discharge, and milling - wire cut discharge - heat treatment. A method of making die parts having the same life cycle as those produced by milling - grinding is developed with the milling - wire cut discharge - high temperature tempering method.

Economic Analysis of the Valuable Minerals Recycling in a Mobile Phone: Focusing on the Social Cost of Carbon (폐휴대전화 유용 광물 재활용의 사회‧경제적 효과 분석: 탄소를 중심으로)

  • In this paper, we quantify the socio-economic impacts of recycling from a carbon social benefit perspective based on a life cycle assessment and economic evaluation of the printed circuit board (PCB) recycling process for waste mobile phones. In particular, we compare the metal recovery process through PCB recycling of waste mobile phones with the traditional metal mining and smelting process, and analyze the change in carbon dioxide emissions under two electricity generation mixes in 2018 and 2030. The analysis shows that for both gold and copper, PCB recycling generates 6.86 times and 3.69 times more carbon dioxide than traditional mining and smelting, respectively. However, when the 2030 electricity generation mix is applied, the amount of carbon dioxide emitted in the recycling process decreases by 44.72% and 44.65% for copper and gold recovery, respectively. This is due to the nature of the recycling process, which uses electricity as the main energy source. A cost-benefit analysis that includes the social cost of carbon dioxide shows a B/C of 1.95, indicating that recycling is economically feasible. However, this result does not take into account both the problem of securing a sufficient amount of waste PCBs and the social cost of the pollutants emitted by the recycling process. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that cost-benefit analyses reflecting the social cost of carbon and carbon dioxide emissions through life cycle assessment of the recycling process will continue to be actively conducted not only for PCB waste recycling, but also for the circular economy and recycling processes that have recently attracted attention.

  • Operation and maintenance stage consists the largest portion of project life cycle cost. Appropriate management and analysis of such stages have massive effect on the total project cost. The effective prediction of optimized repair period is one of main factors in ㅌ management. However, it has been analyzed that the prediction of appropriate repair period revealed limitations in reliability. Therefore, this study suggests a methodology of repair period prediction by dividing finished projects into similar groups with same properties to be compared with the target project using quantitative variables.

  • Recently, in an attempt to overcome the defects of quiescent power shutdown system, smart quiescent power control system has been developed. However, due to its higher investment costs, feasibility evaluation must be conducted. While LCCA (Life Cycle Cost Analysis) model is useful to estimate net savings of alternatives that differ with respect to initial costs and operating costs, the environmental burdens are not considered. On the contrary, LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) model is suitable to assess environmental impacts associated with the stages of a product's life but it does not consider costs. In this study, a comprehensive analysis on the economic and environmental impacts of smart quiescent power control system is conducted by using LCCA and LCA model. In addition, sensitivity analysis is carried out to quantify accuracy of estimates.

  • As the use of new and renewable energy is one of the ways by which the exhaustion of fossil fuels and the other existing environmental problems can be addressed, a policy of spreading information regarding it and of conducting R&D related to it is currently being implemented in advanced countries. In the construction field, the concept of "green building" was born, and the application of this concept has increased, with the end in view of achieving energy savings, resource savings, and recycling, and of conserving the natural environment. In this context, the government of Korea amended the "Law on the Development, Use, and Promotion of New and Recycled Energy" in 2004, which contains 11 provisions related to new and renewable energy and their sources, including solar and geothermal energy as well as sunlight, water, rainfall, and organisms. Since solar-energy should be used instead of fossil fuels by converting sunlight directly into electricity, many researches on this subject are in progress. There are few researches, however, employing the economic approach to the subject. Thus, in this study, an economic assessment of the solar-energy system was conducted using both life cycle cost (LCC) analysis and sensitivity analysis. The results of the LCC analysis show that the solar-energy system will become economically better than the fossil fuel system after 16 years, although the initial construction cost of the solar-energy system is higher than that of the fossil fuel system. The results of this study are expected to be used in selecting an eco-friendly and economical solar-energy system when the construction of a green building is planned.

  • For the purpose of the comparative environmental estimation of the incineration processes for domestic wastes, environmental impacts for several incineration processes for one ton of domestic wastes have been estimated by employing life cycle assessment as the environmental impact assessment method. The scheme of minimum production of environmental pollutants has been considered for three different incineration processes. The evaluation for latent influence on environment was carried out by using CML(Center of Environmental Science) method which was developed by University of Leyden in Netherlands based on the equivalency factor suggested by Korea Accreditation Board. The result of life cycle assessment has showed that the total cost analysis according to the amount of incinerating waste was dependent on the operating conditions of incineration process. In addition, the annual running cost for the incineration of one ton of wastes was estimated to be negatively dependent on the amount of wastes. The degree of environmental pollution was mainly due to the kinds of the wastes rather than by the amount of wastes.

  • In this study, air conditioning systems include ground source heat pump (GSHP), are evaluated for economic feasibility. The building is modeled an air conditioned for 280kW scale. This analysis is compared with the energy tariff programs of Korea and USA. The objectives of this paper are to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the GSHP and combined system using Life-Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis, and to carry out the sensitivity analysis of key parameters. The paper considered the cases including the base case of air source heat pump and the other two alternates for comparisons. The combined system is not only a cost-effective way to the low energy consumption but also a way to avoid a high initial investment. The variations of initial investment and energy rates give a significant effect on the total LCC and payback period.
