Descriptions are provided of the automated aerosol-type classification and mass concentration calculation algorithm for real-time data processing and aerosol products in Korea Aerosol Lidar Observation Network (KALION, http://www.kalion.kr). The KALION algorithm provides aerosol-cloud classification and three aerosol types (clean continental, dust, and polluted continental/urban pollution aerosols). It also generates vertically resolved distributions of aerosol extinction coefficient and mass concentration. An extinction-to-backscatter ratio (lidar ratio) of 63.31 sr and aerosol mass extinction efficiency of $3.36m^2g^{-1}$ ($1.39m^2g^{-1}$ for dust), determined from co-located sky radiometer and $PM_{10}$ mass concentration measurements in Seoul from June 2006 to December 2015, are deployed in the algorithm. To assess the robustness of the algorithm, we investigate the pollution and dust events in Seoul on 28-30 March, 2015. The aerosol-type identification, especially for dust particles, is agreed with the official Asian dust report by Korean Meteorological Administration. The lidar-derived mass concentrations also well match with $PM_{10}$ mass concentrations. Mean bias difference between $PM_{10}$ and lidar-derived mass concentrations estimated from June 2006 to December 2015 in Seoul is about $3{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$. Lidar ratio and aerosol mass extinction efficiency for each aerosol types will be developed and implemented into the KALION algorithm. More products, such as ice and water-droplet cloud discrimination, cloud base height, and boundary layer height will be produced by the KALION algorithm.
Air-borne pollen, biogenically created aerosol particle, influences Earth's radiative balance, visibility impairment, and human health. The importance of pollens has resulted in numerous experimental studies aimed at characterizing their dispersion and transport, as well as health effects. There is, however, limited scientific information concerning the optical properties of airborne pollen particles contributing to total ambient aerosols. In this study, for the first time, optical characteristics of pollen such as aerosol backscattering coefficient, aerosol extinction coefficient, and depolarization ratio at 532 nm and their effect to the atmospheric aerosol were studied by lidar remotes sensing technique. Dual-Lidar observations were carried out at the Gwangju Institute of Science & Technology (GIST) located in Gwagnju, Korea ($35.15^{\circ}E$, $126.53^{\circ}N$) for a spring pollen event from 5 to 7 May 2009. The pollen concentration was measured at the rooftop of Gwangju Bohoon hospital where the building is located 1.0 km apart from lidar site by using Burkard trap sampler. During intensive observation period, high pollen concentration was detected as 1360, 2696, and $1952m^{-3}$ in 5, 6, and 7 May, and increased lidar return signal below 1.5km altitude. Pollen optical depth retrieved from depolarization ratio was 0.036, 0.021, and 0.019 in 5, 6, and 7 May, respectively. Pollen particles mainly detected in daytime resulting increased aerosol optical depth and decrease of Angstrom exponent.
A new approach to retrieve the single-scattering albedo (SSA) of Asian dust plume, mixed with pollution particles, using multi-wavelength Raman lidar system was suggested in this study. Asian dust plume was separated as dust and non-dust particle (i.e. spherical particle) by the particle depolarization ratio at 532 nm. The vertical profiles of optical properties (the particle extinction coefficient at 355 and 532 nm and backscatter coefficient at 355, 532 and 1064 nm) for non-dust particle were used as input parameter for the inversion algorithm. The inversion algorithm provides the vertical distribution of microphysical properties of non-dust particle only so that the estimation of the SSA for the Asian dust in mixing state was suggested in this study. In order to estimate the SSA for the mixed Asian dust, we combined the SSA of non-dust particles retrieved by the inversion algorithms with assumed the SSA of 0.96 at 532 nm for dust. The retrieved SSA of Asian dust plume by lidar data was compared with the Aerosol Robotics Network (AERONET) retrieved values and showed good agreement.
Power lines are one of the main obstacles causing an aircraft crash and thus their realtime detection is significantly important during flight. To avoid such flight obstacles, the use of LIDAR has been recently increasing thanks to its advantages that it is less sensitive to weather conditions and can operate in day and night. In this study, we suggest a fast method to detect power lines from LIDAR data for flight obstacle avoidance. The proposed method first extracts non-ground points by eliminating the points reflected from ground surfaces using a filtering process. Second, we calculate the eigenvalues for the covariance matrix from the coordinates of the generated non-ground points and obtain the ratio of eigenvalues. Based on the ratio of eigenvalues, we can classify the points on a linear structure. Finally, among them, we select the points forming horizontally long straight as power-line points. To verify the algorithm, we used both real and simulated data as the input data. From the experimental results, it is shown that the average detection rate and time are 80% and 0.2 second, respectively. If we would improve the method based on the experiment results from the various flight scenario, it will be effectively utilized for a flight obstacle avoidance system.

Although many studies have been conducted to extract buildings from airborne lidar data, most of them assume that all the boundaries of a building are straight line segments. This makes it difficult to model building boundaries containing curved segments correctly. This paper aims to model buildings containing curved segments as combination of straight lines and arcs. First, two sets of boundary points are extracted by adaptive convex hull algorithm and local convex hull algorithm with a larger radius. Then, arc segments are determined by average spacing of boundary points and intersection ratio of perpendicular lines. Finally, building boundary is modeled through regularization of least squares line or circle fitting. The experimental results showed that the proposed method can model the curved building boundaries as arc segments correctly by completeness of 69% and correctness of 100%. The approach will be utilized effectively to create automatically digital map that meets the conditions of the Korean digital mapping.
A 500 Hz repetition rate excimer laser was developed as light source for pollution lidar. In this paper, the high repetitive output characteristics, the gas flow loop structure, and CR(clearing ratio) characteristics were investigated. Our laser system was constructed compact structure with a streamline gas flow loop and UV preionization. The real gas volume of laser is 10 liter. At 500 Hz repetitive operation, we have obtained average power of 53 watt with KrF laser gas. The variation of laser output, CR, and active volume are $\pm$6.7%, 2.3, and 2.0(H)$\times$1.2(W)$\times$56(L)=134 ㎤, respectively. Laser output power is declined to half at 3$\times$$10^6$ shots.

Detailed 3 dimensional structure of Asian dust plume has been analyzed from the retrieved aerosol data from two different satellites which are the Korea's $1^{st}$ geostationary satellite, namely the Communication, Ocean, Meteorological Satellite (COMS) spacecraft launched in 2010, and the NASA's Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO). COMS spacecraft provides the first time resolved aerial aerosol maps by the systematically well-calibrated multispectral measurements from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) instrument. GOCI data are used here to evaluate intensity, spatial distribution, and long-range transport of Asian dust plume during 1~2 May 2011. We found that the strong Asian dust plume showing AOT of 2~5 was lofted to the altitude around 2~4 km above the Earth's surface and transported over Yellow Sea with a speed of about 25 km/hr. The CALIPSO extinction coefficient and particulate depolarization ratio (PDR) profiles confirmed that nonspherical dust particles were enriched in the dust plume. This study is a first example of quantitative integration of GOCI and CALIOP measurements for clarifying the overall structure of an Asian dust event.
Multiscattering occurs when a laser transmits into dense atmosphere targets (e.g. fogs, smoke or clouds), which can cause depolarization effects even though the scattering particles are spherical. In addition, multiscattering effects have additional information about microphysical properties of scatterers. Thus, multiscattering can be utilized to study the microphysical properties of the liquid water cloud. In this paper, a Monte Carlo method was used to simulate multi-scattering transmission properties of Lidar signals in the cloud. The results showed the slope of the degree of linear polarization (SLDLP) can be used to invert the extinction coefficient, and then the cloud effective size (CES) and the liquid water content (LWC) may be easily obtained by using the extinction coefficient and saturation of the degree of linear polarization (SADLP). Based on calculation results, a microphysical properties inversion method for a liquid cloud was presented. An innovative multiscattering polarization Lidar (MSPL) system was constructed to measure the LWC and CES of the liquid cloud, and a new method based on the polarization splitting ratio of the Polarization Beam Splitter (PBS) was developed to calibrate the polarization channels of MSPL. By analyzing the typical observation data of MSPL observation in the northern suburbs of Nanjing, China, the LWC and CES of the liquid water cloud were obtained. Comparisons between the results from the MSPL, MODIS and the Microwave radar data showed that, the microphysical properties of liquid cloud could be retrieved by combining our MSPL and the inversion method.
SqueeSAR is a new technique to combine Persistent Scatterer (PS) and Distributed Scatterer (DS) for deformation monitoring. Although many PSs are available in urban areas, SqueeSAR analysis can be beneficial to increase the PS density in not only natural targets but also smooth surfaces in urban environment. The height of each targets is generally required to remove topographic phase in interferometric SAR processing. The result of PSInSAR analysis to use PS only is not affected by DEM resolution because the height error of initial input DEM at each PSs is precisely compensated in PS processing chain. On the contrary, SqueeSAR can be affected by DEM resolution and precision since it includes spatial average filtering for DS targets to increase a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this study we observe the effect of DEM resolution on deformation measurement by PSInSAR and SqueeSAR. With ALOS-1 PALSAR L-band data, acquired over Daejeon city, Korea, two different DEM data are used in InSAR processing for comparison: 1 m LIDAR DEM and SRTM 1-arc (~30 m) DEM. As expected the results of PSInSAR analysis show almost same results independently of the kind of DEM, while the results of SqueeSAR analysis show the improvement in quality of the time-series in case of 1-m LIDAR DSM. The density of InSAR measurement points was also improved about five times more than the PSInSAR analysis.

The continuous observations for atmospheric aerosol were carried out during 3 years (2009-2011) by using a multi-wavelength Raman lidar at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Korea ($35.11^{\circ}N$, $126.54^{\circ}E$). The particle depolarization ratios were retrieved from the observations in order to distinguish the Asian dust layer. The vertical information of Asian dust layers were used as input parameter for the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model for analysis of its backward trajectories. The source regions and transport pathways of the Asian dust layer were identified. The most frequent source region of Asian dust in Korea was Gobi desert during observation period in this study. The statistical analysis on the particle depolarization ratio of Asian dust was conducted according to their transport route in order to retrieve the variation of optical properties of Asian dust during long-range transport. The transport routes were classified into the Asian dust which was transported to observation site directly from the source regions, and the Asian dust which was passed over pollution regions of China. The particle depolarization ratios of Asian dust which were transported via industrial regions of China was ranged 0.07-0.1, whereas, the particle depolarization ratio of Asian dust which was transported directly from the source regions to observation site were comparably higher and ranged 0.11-0.15. It is considered that the pure Asian dust particle from source regions were mixed with pollution particles, which is likely to spherical particle, during transportation so that the values of particle depolarization of Asian dust mixed with pollution was decreased.
