The purpose of this study is to determine if natural extracts could be used as an additive in oral health food made with Weissella cibaria CMU (oraCMU). Natural extracts of green tea, mulberry leaf, licorice, and propolis, which are reported to have antimicrobial activities, were selected and used in this study. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of extracts on periodontal pathogens such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis and their synergy effects with oraCMU by the fractional inhibitory concentrations methods were measured. From the results obtained, all the extracts showed no effect on the growth of oraCMU. Green tea extract showed the best antibacterial activity with MIC of 1.8 mg/ml against both F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis. In addition, green tea extract had a synergistic effect with oraCMU against F. nucleatum. Therefore, these results suggested that green tea extract is available as an additive in oral health food made with oraCMU.
Surface browning, caused by cutting and other wound during minimal processing, is very important quality criterion to consumers. Shelf-life of fresh-cut potatoes was extended using natural antibrowning treatments. Fresh-cut potatoes dipped with licorice and green tea extracts were packed with LDPE film and stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 14 days. Quality characteristics of fresh-cut potatoes were investigated during storage. During storage, L value decreased and PPO activity increased. PPO showed the lowest activity at around 7 days storage, during which browning was effectively inhibited in licorice- and green tea extract-treated potatoes. Total phenol and chlorogenic acid contents increased for 7 days. Results suggest natural licorice extracts with ascorbic acids are effective antibrowning agents for maintaining quality of fresh-cut potatoes.
By reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, the extraction and separation of glabridin by from licoricce root was performed in this work. The column efficiencies and resolutions of glabridin were investigated with mobile phase composition on the reversed-phase chromatographic system. The glabridin collected from licorice root was identified by LC/MS. The mobile phase used to extract glabridin were composed of ethanol, methanol, acetone, and ethyl acetate. For one-hour ultrasonic extraction with solvent of ethyl acetate, the favorable content of glabridin was obtained as 1.26g/kg. The glabridin was well separated in the mobile phase composition of 50/50 vol. % (acetonitrile/water).
Cell transformation induced by epidermal growth factor (EGF) and 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) is a critical event in cancer initiation and progression, and understanding the underlying mechanisms is essential for the development of new therapeutic strategies. Licorice extract contains various bioactive compounds, which have been reported to have anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects. This study investigated the cancer preventive efficacy of licochalcone D (LicoD), a chalcone derivative in licorice extract, in EGF and TPA-induced transformed skin keratinocyte cells. LicoD effectively suppressed EGF-induced cell proliferation and anchorage-independent colony growth. EGF and TPA promoted the S phase of cell cycle, while LicoD treatment caused G1 phase arrest and down-regulated cyclin D1 and up-regulated p21 expression associated with the G1 phase. LicoD also induced apoptosis and increased apoptosis-related proteins such as cleaved-caspase-3, cleaved-caspase-7, and Bax (Bcl2-associated X protein). We further investigated the effect of LicoD on the AKT signaling pathway involved in various cellular processes and found decreased p-AKT, p-GSK3β, and p-NFκB expression. Treatment with MK-2206, an AKT pharmacological inhibitor, suppressed EGF-induced cell proliferation and transformed colony growth. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the potential of LicoD as a preventive agent for skin carcinogenesis.
Antioxidative activity and physicochemical characteristics of heat-treated licorice extracted by ethyl-acetate (EtOAc) and ethyl-alcohol (EtOH) were evaluated at various treatment temperatures (110, 120, 130, 140, and $150^{\circ}C$), times (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hr), and moisture contents (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%). Maximum extraction yields of EtOAc treated at $140^{\circ}C$, 2 hr, and 20% moisture content and EtOH extracts treated at $120^{\circ}C$, 2 hr, and 40% moisture content were 9.48 and 32.90%, whereas those of control were 3.74 and 14.60%, respectively. Highest total polyphenol content was obtained from 13.95 mg/g EtOH extract treated at $150^{\circ}C$, 3 hr, and 30% moisture content (control: 6.92 mg/g). Highest antioxidative activity $(IC_{50})$ was obtained from 0.32 g/L EtOAc treated at $140^{\circ}C$, 2 hr, and 20% moisture content (control: 0.57 g/L). Highest ascorbic acid equivalent antioxidant activity value of 2,112.61 mg ascorbic acid (AA) eq was obtained from EtOAc extract treated at $120^{\circ}C$, 2 hr, and 40% moisture content (control: 1,920.27 mg AA eq). Optimum heat treatment conditions were $130-140^{\circ}C$, 3 hr, and 30% moisture content.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of herbal (Obtusifolia, Cinnamon, Chinese pepper, Licorice) extracts on the rumen fermentation in vitro. Comparing to the control, in vitro dry matter digestibility was significantly (P<0.05) decreased at zero hour in the Cinnamon and the Chinese pepper, and at three hour after supplementation in the Licorice. The ratio of volatile fatty acids were significant (P<0.05) differences at 3 hour after fermentation only, acetic acid was higher (P<0.05) in the control compare to the herbal extract treatments, but the ratios of butyrate, iso-butyrate, iso-valerate and valerate were lowest in the control. The growth rate of rumen microbes in vitro was significantly (P<0.05) higer in the herbal extract treatments excluding the Obtusifolia than the control during three hour fermentation, but was not significant difference among treatments in the other fermentation times. From above results, even though the extracts of Cinnamon, Chinese pepper and Licorice inclined to inhibit the activity of rumen microbes during early fermentation period, but did not affect on the growth rate of rumen microbes in vitro.

The anti-adipogenic activity of Glycyrrhiza uralensis was investigated by examining the effects of its ethanol extract (GUE) on a mouse model with a high-fat diet (HFD) and 3T3-L1 preadipocytes during adipocyte differentiation. GUE administration for eight weeks significantly reduced weight gain in mice fed an HFD. GUE effectively inhibited 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation and lipid droplet accumulation. This inhibitory effect is associated with the downregulation of key adipogenic regulators, including PPARγ and C/EBPα, and the modulation of adipose metabolism regulators, such as Fasn and Fabp4. LC-Q-TOF-MS analysis identified twelve phenolic and flavonoid compounds, including liquiritigenin and licorice saponin, in the GUE. These findings demonstrate that the anti-obesity effect of the GUE is attributed to the biological activity of its phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Therefore, the GUE has potential anti-obesity activity. Moreover, further studies on the isolation of bioactive components from the GUE and the investigation of the underlying molecular mechanisms of the GUE are required to establish its efficacy in metabolic disorders, including obesity.

This study evaluated the in vitro effect of medicinal plant extracts on ruminal methanogenesis, four different groups of methanogens and ruminal fermentation characteristics. A fistulated Holstein cow was used as a donor of rumen fluid. Licorice and mugwort extracts (Glycyrrhiza uralensis and Artemisia capillaris, 0.5% and 1% of total substrate DM, respectively), previously used as folk remedies, were added to an in vitro fermentation incubated with buffered-rumen fluid. Total gas production in Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatment was not significantly different between treatments (p<0.05) while total gas production in the Artemisia capillaris extract treatment was lower than that of the control. Artemisia capillaris extract and Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract reduced $CH_4$ emission by 14% (p<0.05) and 8% (p<0.05), respectively. Ciliate-associated methanogens population decreased by 18% in the medicinal plant extracts treatments. Medicinal plant extracts also affected the order Methanobacteriales community. Methanobacteriales diversity decreased by 35% in the Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatment and 30% in the Artemisia capillaris extract treatment. The order Methanomicrobiales population decreased by 50% in the 0.5% of Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract treatment. These findings demonstrate that medicinal plant extracts have the potential to inhibit in vitro ruminal methanogenesis.
Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of ampule containing herbal extract(Ulmus davidiana, Ginkgo biloba, Perilla ocymoides, Morus alba, Glycyrrhiza uralensis (licorice), and Angelica gigas) on skin wrinkles in adult women with facial wrinkles. Methods : A total of 12 women, 30 to 46 years of age, with wrinkles in the corner of eyes, applied ampule containing herbal extract twice daily for up to 12 weeks.
