South Korea is covered primarily by temperate vegetation; therefore, foliicolous lichens may not be expected to play an important role in its lichen flora. However, this study describes four foliicolous lichen species, Strigula concreta, S. macrocarpa, S. melanobapha, and S. subelegans, which are new to South Korea. These findings will lead to further research on foliicolous lichens and provide a better understanding of their distribution within the East Asian region. This is the first detailed report on foliicolous lichens and their distribution in South Korea.
Author have studies lichen flora of the most important ice-free areas of Continental Antarctic: Bunger Hills, and the vicinity of Prudz Bay (Larsemann Hills, and Radok Lake in Prince Charles Mountains). Totally 44 lichen species from 22 genera were reported for Bunger Hills and 50 lichen species from 22 genera and 10 families: Acarosporaceae, Lecanoraceae, Lecideaceae, Parmeliaceae, Pertusariaceae, Physciaceae, Rhizocarpaceae, Stereocaulaceae, Theloschistaceae, and Umbilicariaceaewere reported for the Prudz Bay Region. 20 lichen species were found in the region for the first time. Phytogeographic analysis indicated a relatively high proportion of species with bipolar distribution - about 50% of recorded lichen species. About 30% of lichens normally don't extend into maritime zone occurring in continental Antarctic only. The most common lichen families in the region are Buelliaceae, Lecanoraceae and Teloschistaceae. The water supply and not a temperature is the critical factor for lichens in the Continental Antarctic. Moisture appears to be supplied for lichens not only from snow-melt water but mainly from air. In Maritime Antarctic, due to high air humidity macrolichens form communities everywhere (Himantormia, Usnea and Umbilicaria). In oases of Continental Antarctic extensive sites are lacking in lichen cover, even if the ground is normally snow free. Lichens occur at humid sites with moisture which were brought by winds over the ice cap and poorly developed or absent in dry areas. Of particular significance for lichens are substrate characteristics, animals influence and salinity brought by wind in coastal areas. Most rich lichen vegetation developed in oases around nests of snow petrels, where the melt water is enriched by nutrients. In contrast, the most pure vegetation is on mobile sand and gravel and in salted coastal habitats.
This study was initially performed to obtain fundamental data on lichen distribution depending on environmental condiLichens distributed on coastal rocks atleast 20 m far away from the coast were also investigated. Analyof morphological characteristics and rDNA ITS clones revealed that lichens containing 9 families and 15 genera were distributed in coastal rocks of V-do, while lichens containing 10 families and 14 genera were in field rocks, demonstrating little difference of diversity between both sites. Foliose lichens such as PhaeophysPhyscia, Pyxine belonging to the family Physciaceae were representatives distributed in coastal rocks of V-do, along with Xanthoparmelia belonging to Parmeliaceae, fruticose lichens such as Ramalina to Ramaliand crustose lichen Lecanora to Lecanoraceae. In contrast, foliose lichen Cladonia belonging to the family Cladoniaceae, fruitcose lichen Stereocaulon to Streocaulaceae, and crustose lichen Porpidia to Porpidwere found only on the surface of field rocks. Crustose lichens containing genera Caloplaca, CanDirinaria, Graphis, Rhizocarpon, and Pertusaria were rarely distributed in coastal rocks, and most of them were also found in field rocks.

This study was conducted to examine the pharmacological effect of water soluble extract of Lichens (Parmelia, Physcia and Cladonia species) on liver-damaged rat by $CCl_4$ injection. Rat livers were damaged acutely and chronically by one-time injection of $CCl_4$ just prior to five days of experimental period and continuous injections in every three days for eight weeks of experimental period, respectively. During each period the experimental group was fed Lichens extract(5.5 mg of dry wt/ml) instead of water given to the control group. For both acute and chronic liver damage, the experimental group showed higher oxidative activity of hepatic mitochondria measured by state 3 respiration, P/O ratio, respiratory control and ATP synthesized, compard to the control group. Serum glucose was slightly higher in the experimental group but liver glycogen showed no significant difference between experimental and control groups. In experimental group, liver glucose-6-phosphatase activity was increased during first two days after acute liver damage, but not significantly different from control group during chronic damage. Liver lactate, malate plus fumarte and glutamate tended to be higher in the experimental group, especially for chronic liver damaged rat. It is concluded that Lichens extract stimulate cytoplasmic and mitochondrial oxidative activities and the possible mechanism of the latter is supposed to involve the preservation of membrane integrity by certain component(s) of water-soluble Lichens extract.
Lichen is one of the most widely distributed eucaryotic organisms in the world. Lichen is the result of a symbiotic association between two unrelated organisms - a fungus and an alga (or cyanobacterium). In USA, Japan and European countries, there has been a resurgence of interest in lichens as source of novel, pharmacologically active molecules during the last 20 years. However, lichen researches in Korean lichens were mainly focused on investigation of Korean lichen flora and most of them were primitive and short-term based projects until 1990s. In this communication, general introduction of lichens was attempted to draw the attention of Korean researchers to Korean lichen bioresource. Research activities on Korean lichens during the past were also summarized. Recent progress in Korean lichen research is briefly discussed with emphasis of KoLRI (Korean Lichen Research Institute) activities and roles in national researches projects on bioresource development in Korea.
The antioxidant properties of 46 lichen species, collected from the highly UV-exposed alpine areas of southwestern China, were evaluated for their potential therapeutic utilization. The anti-linoleic acid peroxidation activity, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity, reducing power, and total phenolic contents were all assessed in vitro in the methanol extract of the lichens. A potent reducing power was detected in a number of the lichen extracts, when compared with butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA). In general, it was found that many of the lichens, with antioxidant properties, contained large quantities of phenolic content. Extracts of Peltigera praetextata and Sticta nylanderiana were found to exhibit the most potent activity in all of the antioxidant tests. In particular, extracts of S. nylanderiana displayed a 1.37 times greater anti-linoleic acid peroxidation activity, when compared with the ascorbic acid used as the positive control. S. nylanderiana also possessed the strongest free radical scavenging activity amongst all the tested species, with an inhibition rate of 90.4% at concentration of $330{\mu}g/ml$. Activity-guided bioautographic TLC and HPLC analyses were used to establish which compounds were responsible for the potent antioxidant activities of the S. nylanderiana extract. These analyses revealed lecanoric acid to be primarily responsible for the effective antioxidant properties of S. nylanderiana. Overall, these results have indicated that several highland lichens have the potential of being utilized as novel bioresources for naturally occurring antioxidant therapies.
The cluster analysis on the distribution of epiphytic lichens on the north, south, east and west slope of Mt. Hanra was carried out by three methods, sum of square algorithm (SSA), prinicipal component analysis (PCA) and multidimensional scaling method(MDS). Analysis of concentration (AOC) was used for the comparison between the lichen communities of north and south slope. The lichen species was identified 35 species by Hale and Culberson technique. The classification of sites by SSA method was divided into two areas in four slopes, and that of species by SSA, PCA and MDS methods was classified into three clusters in east slope, four clusters in south and west slope, and there clusters in north slope. The comparison between north and south slope of the distribution of lichens indicates that loight elevation of north slope (NH; 1600m~1900m) was similar to that of relative low elevation of south slope (SL; 1000m~1300m). The genus lichen, Anaptychia, Parmelia, Lobaria and peltigera was found as the dominant genus in both slopes.
The vertical distribution of the corticolous lichens in Mt. Sobaeg was detected by 10cm point quadrat. The dominant species of lichens was arranged in a single dimensional ordination along the elevational gradient with the frequency percentage of the species. Cetraria stracheyi, Parnaria leucosticta, Stieta platyphyll and Parmelia petusa were found in order of abundant from lower, Samgadong(400m) to higher, Birobong(1439m) in which they occurred mainly on the southwest slope. However, such species as Cetraria juniperina was more abundant than Parnaria leucosticta and Stieta platyphylla at the southeast slope. The distribution of Cetraria Stracheyi and Parnaria leucosticta was limited below 1200m height, while Parmelia petusa and Cetraria juniperina mostly above 900m height.

In order to evaluate the effect of water soluble extract of lichens (Physcia, Parmelia and Clandonia species) on liver damage, activities transaminase(GPT) and 5'-nucleotidase in serum and liver were measured in rats fed lichens extract. DNA and RNA were measured in liver and spleen, as well as various organ weights and blood components. Control group was fed water to compare with the lichen group. Three sets of experiments were conducted: the first set was done with normal rats, the second one with rats with liver damage induced by $CCl_4$ injection was divided into three subgroups. i.e. no treatment group, pre-treatment group and post-treatment group, and the third one was with rats with acute and chronic liver damage. In normal rats, lichens extract feeding reduced serum GOT and GPT activities. In liver damaged rats, both pre-and post-treatment had suppressing effect against increase of serum enzymes. In rats with acute and chronic liver damage, lichens fed group had lower activities of serum GOT, GPT and 5'-nucleotidase but higher activities of liver enzymes than control group. This effect was more pronounced in rats with acute liver damage. Liver weight increased considerably with lichens intake. Hemoglobin and hematocrit levels were also higher in lichens fed group. Nucleic acid contents in spleen but not in liver were increased in lichens fed group. The latter increase was more significant with chronic liver damage. It is suggested from the present study that water soluble lichens extract play protective and therapeutic roles in organs against infection and atrophic disease.
Air pollution effects on soil chemical properties, denitrifying and sulfur-reducing bacteria and lichens were examined around the Yeochun industrial estate. Soil samples were collected from mountain and/or mountain edges around the Namhae Chemical Corp., which is located at the southern edge of the estate, and sampled plots which were selected at 2km, 4km, 6km, 8km, and 10km apart from the industrial estate. The forest soils around the industrial estate could be classified into the Reddish yellow forest soil group, but soil pH was quite lower than the soils of the group. Because of the extremely low soil pH, microbial activity related to mineralization of organic matter was expected to be very low even though C/N ratio ranged from 15 to 20. As a result, soil organic matter and total nitrogen in soil were relatively high compared to the soils of the group. In general, soil chemical properties around the industrial estate up to 4km apart from the estate were significantly different from the rest(more than 6km apart from the estate) possibly due to air pollution. However, denitrifying bacteria and sulfur-reducing bacteria did not show significant differences in colony forming units by the distances from the industrial estate. By the way, lichens showed distinct differences in frequencies and coverages by the distances from the industrial estate possibly due to air pollution. The corticolous lichens showed more sensitive response to the air pollution compared to the saxicolous lichens.
