  • Criteria for evaluating digital libraries have been suggested in prior studies, but limited research has been done to understand users' perceptions of evaluation criteria. This study investigates users' opinions of the importance of digital library evaluation criteria. Thirty user participants, including 10 faculty members and 20 students, were recruited from five universities across the United States. They were asked to rate the importance of evaluation criteria in eight dimensions (e.g. collections, information organization, context, etc.). The results demonstrate that users care about evaluation criteria related to the use and quality of collection and services rather than the operation of digital libraries. The findings of this study are relevant to the development of user-centered digital libraries and associated evaluation frameworks through the incorporation of unique users' needs and preferences.

  • This research analyzed the type of major research and support services provided by libraries in academic institutions. The research also investigated the awareness of users using the research and support services. We found that the awareness was influenced by users' major and status. In particular, prior usage of the services had statistically significant result depending on users' major and status. On the other hand, the rank of faculty members or the year of study for students were found to not have a significant influence on the general perception of the research support services. We also found that researchers require the support services in every stages of their study. In addition, the preference of training method and research guidance for such services differed by users' major.

  • Currently, most academic libraries provide OPAC 2.0 service which applies Web 2.0 based-internet search engine to OPAC. The new service is for the users' convenience and so the considerations for the users' opinions are of great importance for each of services. The objectives of the study were to investigate perceptions of the students as the main user for academic library on the importance for the main services of OPAC 2.0 and analyzed information sources and the reasons for book search by the virtue of this service. The study showed that there were the users' high expectations on accuracy and satisfaction for OPAC 2.0, and the main searching information source was the OPAC of the universities to which the users belong due to familiar screen as well as convenient reading and book loan through it. The OPAC 2.0 service needs to be improved with the consideration of the users' opinions.

  • This study aims to measure the service quality of children's libraries using LibQUAL+ and to analyze the effect of service quality on users' satisfaction. To do that, a survey was conducted with 210 users in three children's libraries located in J city. In three service quality dimensions - 'Affect of Service', 'Information Control', and 'Library as Place' - the users' perceived service level was less than the minimum service level, which implies that the current services should be improved immediately. It was also found that 'Affect of Service' and 'Library as Place' influenced the users' satisfaction. Based on the statistical results and the content analysis of the users' comments about the library services, this study suggests recommendations for improving library services in the children's libraries.

  • This study aims to understand the characteristics of civil petitions and complaints within public libraries and to identify factors to the civil petitions. We develop a survey questionnaire for the goals based on the previous related studies and a pilot study with several open-ended interviews with public library users. Then we collect data using the questionnaire from 154 survey participants (public library users). The collected data are statistically analyzed by using factor analysis, canonical correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that there are two identified dependent factors, such as petition and complaint, and six independent factors, including librarian specialty, service convenience, and communication between librarians and users. Through a series of statistical analysis for identifying specific relationships between individual dependent factors and predictors, we discuss the characteristics of the library civil petitions and complaints, and the importance of a structural/relation-based approach to the library civil petition as a complimentary for the functional approach. Based on the results and discussions, we suggest several future research directions, including research on the relationship between the library civil petitions and library performances.

  • With the rapid and broad changes of information ecology human information activity is moving toward a new pattern-networking. Various types of information networks are being constructed over the world, and through the networks various forms and contents of information are being flowed or transferred. Under these circumstances a serious question could arise regarding whether the present cataloging principles and practices are right and appropriate for the so-called 'digital network generation of library users'. This study was developed to explore this question. Especially, this study conducted an analysis on the utility of library catalog with an emphasis on the perspectives of library users. As a result, it turned out that the quality of library catalogs produced by Korean universities was in a very low standard. The degree of satisfaction on the quality was very low, particularly among library users. In conclusion, this study made several suggestions on the cataloging policy and practices: both at the national level and the unit library level.

  • In this study, an ILL request system was implemented using Z39.50 item order extended service. ILL requests in this system are initiated by users through a gateway acting as a Z39.50 origin for searching remote catalog databases. When users initiate a request while searching OPACs of other libraries, an extended service request PDU for item order is first sent to the home library which subsequently generates an ILL protocol message to be sent to the target library. This approach enables users to request an item online while searching. and at the same time allows the home library to retain control over the ILL transaction.

  • Currently, it is not easy for most domestic public libraries to collect and provide reliable health information services on their own. Health information is distributed or professional, making it inconvenient for users to use. Based on the implications derived from the case study, the Library Health Information Integration Service Model was proposed as a specialized information service. The model consists of a composition shared by librarians, health and medical experts, and users, focusing on library websites that provide integrated health information integration services, and has the following features. First, it provides health and medical information on a specialized subject. Second, it provides integrated health and medical information services provided in various ways. Third, librarians and health and medical experts work together to provide information services. Fourth, users can freely use health information integration services online and offline. The model presented in this study means that libraries can play a leading role in health information integration services to increase the utilization rate of public libraries and further contribute to librarians serving as experts in health information services.
