  • The purpose of this study is to investigate awareness of librarian's job prospects, and to do this a survey was conducted with 502 college students in 14 Departments of Library and Information Science around Korea and 753 librarians in libraries and related agencies. The study results are as follows. First, satisfaction with educational curriculum was higher in students than librarians. Second, both students and librarians regarded workplace based practical training as employment requirements and also evaluated certifications and academic performance as important requirements. Third, both groups asked that information on employment rates be available in a timely manner, and perceived that the librarian's job prospects were not bright. Therefore, in order to improve employment of librarians, it will be necessary to establish a job information system, reorganize the current educational curriculum into a practice-oriented curriculum, and introduce the national curriculum statements (NCS)-based curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study is to systematically measure the effectiveness of continuous education of librarians using the Kirkpatrick education evaluation model. A three-stage educational evaluation was conducted on 136 librarian teachers who participated in the 『Qualification training for librarian teacher level 1』 in the summer of 2022. The first stage was a satisfaction survey on the overall education, and the second and third stages were investigated before and after education, and the actual effect of education was measured by pre-post difference analysis. The second stage is learning evaluation, and the third stage is job competency improvement evaluation. As a result of the study, high measurement scores were calculated at all stages, and the before and after effect of education was statistically significant in the second stage of learning evaluation. In the third stage of the job competency improvement evaluation, the score fell after education, but it was not statistically significant. Significant results were derived from the second stage of evaluation, and future studies suggested that the evaluation model should be supplemented and that a balanced curriculum should be designed to produce valid results.

First, the study divided the common competency value of librarians as human capital of libraries into skills, knowledge, behavior and attitude, and analyzed each area of competency value for librarians of the A-library. As a result, the average of the 'librarian's behavior and attitude' area was the highest, followed by the 'librarian's skill' area and the 'librarian's knowledge' area. Second, in terms of 'librarian's skill', A-library librarians' competence values were high in the order of 'communication', 'leadership', 'technology' and in the terms of 'librarian's knowledge' ones were high in the order of 'law and policy', 'marketing', 'learning and growth' and 'finance and accounting'. In addition, in areas of 'librarian's behavior and attitude', the factors were high in the order of 'ethics and values', 'interpersonal relationships' and 'customer service'. Third, the analysis of whether the average difference exists depending on the characteristics of A-library librarians on their evaluation of the competency value shows that only the 'working period' factor in the total competency value and the two factors 'age' and 'working period' were statistically significant in the 'librarian's knowledge' area. Forth, as a result of a regression analysis to identify the characteristics of A-library librarians and their impact on competency value, only the 'final education' factor was statistically significant for the competency value of the 'librarian's skill' area. Fifth, in the survey on problems and desirable improvement measures in increasing the competency value of librarians, the proportion of presenting problems and improvement plan in systemic aspects such as the 'librarian qualification system' and 'librarian training system' was high.

  • A public librarian is an occupation, which requires long-term. continuous training and difficult study to acquire and cultivate professional knowledge and skills. It is a necessity to achieve new knowledge, information and skills via appropriate retraining. A training system is the method which gives chances of retraining to public librarians. After examining some of the problems with the existing training system, it is apparent that the direction of training system needs to be decentralized. That is each local branch should be autonomous in terms of new training for librarians. For the method of training system, each autonomous unit would integrate the different theories to apply to the community-at-large and invite practical specialists from the local community to lecture. The training classes would be elective in that the each librarian could choose the classes he/she wants to take and give them credits for that, but the certificate for the class would also go towards completion for the required technical training. Finally, the utilization of cyber-education should be introduced, and the library association's role strengthened, to help public librarians cultivate their specialties.

  • As the teaching and learning paradigm shifts, the demand for informal learning is increasing. In this study, we reviewed related literature and analyzed cases of operating professional learning communities in order to apply professional learning communities to librarianship education and training programs. Seven operational cases of professional learning communities, both domestic and foreign, within the field of librarianship and other fields were selected. The organizational structure, operational format and method, learning content, and support systems were analyzed. Through this analysis, the concept of a librarian learning community was defined, and implications for organizing and operating a librarian learning community were derived from the spontaneity and multi-layeredness of composition, diversity of learning community operation formats, and fieldality of learning content. As a support system for the smooth operation and activation of the librarian learning communities continuity of program operation by the operating organization, support and cooperation from affiliated organizations, education and training programs, platform establishment and operation, and dissemination and feedback of results for activation were presented.
