This paper presents a method for the acceleration analysis of multi-legged walking robots in consideration of the frictional ground contact. This method is based on both unified dynamic equation for finding the acceleration of a robot's body and constraint equation for satisfying no-slip condition. After the dynamic equation representing relationship between actuator torques and body acceleration, is derived from the force and acceleration relationship between foot and body's gravity center, the constraint equation is formulated to reconfigure the maximum torque boundaries satisfying no-slip condition from given original actuator torque boundaries. From application of the reconfigured torques to the dynamic equation, interested acceleration boundaries are obtained. The approach based on above two equations, is adapted to the changes of degree-of-freedoms of legs as well as friction of ground. And the method provides the maximum translational and rotational acceleration boundaries of body's center that are achievable in every direction without occurring slipping at the contact points or saturating all actuators. Given the torque limits in infinite normsense, the resultant accelerations are derived as a polytope. From the proposed method, we obtained achievable acceleration boundaries of 4-legged and 6-legged walking robot system successfully.
Legged robots can avoid an obstacle by crawling-over or striding, according to the obstacle’s nature and the current state of the robot. Thus, it can be observed that the mobility efficiency to reach a destination is improved by such action. Moreover, if robots have many legs like 4-legged or 6-legged types, then the robot movement range is affected by the order of swing leg. In this paper, the avoidance action of a quadruped robot is generated by a neural network (NN) whose inputs are information on the position of the destination, the obstacle configuration and the robot's self-state. To realize a free gait in static walking, the order of swing leg is determined using an another NN whose inputs are the amount of movements and the robot’s self-state. The design parameter of the latter NN is adjusted by using genetic algorithm (GA).
Small-scale ground mobile robots can access confined spaces where people or larger robots are unable. As the scale of the robot decreases, the relative size of the environment increases; therefore, maintaining the mobility of the small-scale robot is required. However, small-scale robots have limitations in using a large number of high-performance actuators, powerful computational devices, and a power source. Insects can effectively navigate various terrains in nature with their legged motion. Discrete contact with the ground and the foot enables creatures to traverse irregular surfaces. Inspired by the leg motion of the insect, researchers have developed small-scale robots and they implemented swing and lifting motions of the leg by designing leg linkages that can be adapted to small-scale robots. In this paper, we propose a leg linkage design for insect-inspired small-scale ground mobile robots. To use minimal actuation and reduce the control complexity, we designed a 1-DOF 3-dimensional leg linkage that can generate a proper leg trajectory using one continuous rotational input. We analyzed the kinematics of the proposed leg linkage to investigate the effect of link parameters on the foot trajectory.
This paper presents mechanical design and control of a bio-inspired legged robot. To achieve a fast legged running mechanism, a novel linkage leg structure is designed based on hind legs of domestic cats. The skeletomuscular system and parallel leg movement of a cat are analyzed and applied to determine the link parameters. The hierarchical control architecture is designed according to the biological data to generate and modulate desired gaits. The effectiveness of the leg mechanism design and control is verified experimentally. The legged robot runs at a speed of 46 km/h, which is comparatively higher speed than other existing legged robots.
Generally, multi-legged walking robots have excellent mobility in rough and uneven terrain, and they are deployed for the safety of rescuers in various disaster environments. However, as each leg is driven by a number of actuators, it leads to a complicated structure and high power consumption; therefore, it is difficult to put them into practical use. In this article, a new concept is proposed of a walking robot whose legs are driven by a complex linkage structure to overcome the deficiencies of conventional multi-legged walking robots. A double crank-rocker mechanism is proposed, making it possible for one DC motor to actuate the left and right movements of two neighboring thighs of the multi-legged walking robot. Each leg can also move up and down through an improved cam structure. Finally, each mechanism is connected by spur and bevel gears, so that only two DC motors can drive all legs of the walking robot. The feasibility of the designed complex linkage mechanism was verified using the UG NX program. It was confirmed through actual production that the proposed multi-legged walking robot performs the desired motion.
We introduce a pattern generation method for a hopping one-legged robot and verify it experimentally. The pattern is derived from the liner and angular momentum of a COM (Center of Mass), which are pre-scheduled. Because of the relation between angular velocities of joints and momemtums of the COM, joint angle trajectories are easily obtained. In addition, the landing impact force is reduced by only adjusting the landing timing. In the experiment, the one-legged robot hops in place with 0.06 s of flying time, and makes continuous hopping. Based on our experimental results, the proposed method can be applied to hopping and running of biped humanoid robots.
The coordinated mechanism of terrestrial vertebrates enables them to maneuver over all of the terrain conditions since they have a distinct ability to adapt to varying conditions. Their locomotions remain infinitely more advanced and elegant than that of present-day existing mechanical walking robots. However, the principles of existing walking robots are based more on technical rather than on biological concepts, yielding unstable locomotion with low speed. In order to apply these advanced biological phenomena to the mechanical design of 4-legged walking robot, modeling methods are introduced and mathematical equations are also introduced.
This paper presents a novel method of path planning for a quadruped walking robot on irregular terrain. In the previous study on the path planning problem of mobile robots, it has been usually focused on the collision-free path planning for wheeled robots. The path planning problem of legged roboth, however, has unique aspects from the point of viw that the legged robot can cross over the obstacles and the gait constraint should be considered in the process of planning a path. To resolve this unique problem systematically, a new concept of the artificial intensity field of light is numerically constructed over the configuration space of the robot including the transformed obstacles and a feasible path is sought in the field. Also, the efficiency of the proposed method is shown by various simulation results.
