  • Interest in renewable energy has been increasing in recent years for many reasons, and there have been many studies on new types of wave energy converters and mechanisms for them. However, in this paper, motion characteristics of a wave energy converter with a wave activating body type is studied with an experiment. In order to conduct the experiment, a simple wave activating body type's wave energy converter is proposed. Experimental variations consist of connection type and location. The connection type controls the rotation motions of structures, and the connection location controls the distance between structures. The movement of floating structures, such as rotation, velocity, and acceleration, is measured with a potentiometer and a motion capture camera. Using the recorded data, the motion characteristics derived from the experimental variations are investigated.

  • Previously, many researchers assessed nearshore wave energy in two ways. The first is a simulation with respect to the offshore wave time series to validate the wave buoy data and the wave model results, and the other is to simulate the representative waves of typical seasonal wave conditions. The former requires enormous computational time and effort. The latter yields inspection on the patterns for the spatial and temporal distribution of nearshore wave energy but tends to underestimates the amount of wave energy in the nearshore region owing to the correlation between the significant wave height and wave period. $\ddot{O}$zger et al. (2004) derived the stochastic wave energy formulation by introducing a correction factor explicitly in terms of the covariance of the wave energy and significant wave height. In this study, a correction factor was applied for the assessment of nearshore wave energy obtained by numerical simulation of wave transformation with respect to representative waves.

  • This study is to numerically investigate the characteristics of wave energy variations propagating over impermeable submerged breakwaters with irregular waves. Two-dimensional numerical wave flume based on the VOF method was used. VOF method is the most efficient capable of simulating free surfaces including wave breaking. From the computed frequency spectrum results, wave breaking play important role in ability of the submerged breakwaters to dissipate incident wave energy. In case of occurring wave breaking, our analysis shows that wave energy moves to short wave period on one-row impermeable submerged breakwater's lee side and is widely distributed not having peak period on two- row impermeable submerged breakwater's lee side.

  • Love wave is one of the shear horizontal waves and it can propagate between two layers in liquid without energy loss. The SAW (surface acoustic wave) sensor using Love wave is very useful for real time measurement of the viscosity of liquid with high sensitivity. In this study, the 77 MHz and 155 MHz Love wave SAW sensors were fabricated and use to measure the viscosity of low viscous liquid. To generate the surface acoustic wave, the inter-digital transducers were fabricated on the quartz crystal wafer. In order to obtain the optimal thickness of the coating film (novolac photoresist) generating the Love wave on the surface of SAW device, theoretical calculation was performed. The performances of fabricated Love wave SAW sensors were tested. As test liquid, pure water and glycerol solutions having different concentrations were used. Since the determination coefficients of the regression equations for measuring the viscosity of liquid are greater than 0.98, the developed Love wave SAW sensors in this study will be very useful for precise measurement of viscosity of liquid.

  • In this study, the wave power resources at the three locations [Sokcho, Hupo, and Onsan] on the east coast of Korea were estimated by using the field measurement data and were compared with the results of previous researches. It was found that seasonal variation of the wave power is very significant on the east coast of Korean peninsula. The wave power was the smallest in the summer season at all the locations. At Hupo and Onsan, the highest value of the monthly-averaged wave power was observed in September, probably because the pathways of typhoon in September were close to both locations. At the northest location, Sockcho, in contrast, the monthly highest value of the wave power appeared in January, probably owing to the influence of storm waves driven by Donghae twister. The estimated annual average wave power was 4.5 kW/m at Sokcho, which was about two times larger than those at other two locations. It is noteworthy that this result is completely different from past researches based on wave hindcasting data. In addition, the estimates of wave power by the past researches seemed to be smaller than those of the present study, especially at the northern region of the east coast.

  • Love wave and Rayleigh wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave which makes Love wave superior to Rayleigh wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than the information of Rayleigh wave. Based on theoretical research, the joint inversion analysis which is used both Love wave dispersion information and Rayleigh wave dispersion information was proposed. Purpose of the joint inversion analysis is to improve accuracy and convergency of inversion results utilizing that frequency contribution of each wave is different. This analysis technique is consisted of the forward modeling using transfer matrix, the sensitivity matrix determined to the ground system and DLSS(Damped Least Square Solution) as a inversion technique. The application of this analysis was examined through the field test.

  • When the wind blows hard, most waves are breaking in sea. Breaking waves occur, exceeding limitation of wave steepness(wave height/wave length=l/7). Because a wave of single angular frequency couldn't generate the breaking phenomena at two dimensional ocean engineering basin, the breaking wave can be generated by the superposition of waves with various angular frequencies. We research how are the particle kinematics in the breaking wave and the magnitude of the breaking wave exciting force. We compare the force in a regular wave which has same specifications(wave height, period and length) as the breaking wave. Also the experimental results of wave exciting force and particle velocity are investigated by comparison on the analytic results using the potential theory.

  • Shear wave velocity of uncemented soil can be expressed as the function of effective stresses when capillary phenomenons are negligible. However, the terms of effective stresses are divided to the direction of wave propagation and polarization because stress states are generally anisotropy. The shear wave velocities are affected by parameters and exponents that are experimentally determined. The exponents are controlled contact effects of particulate materials(sizes, shapes, and structures of particles) and the parameters are changed contact behaviors between particles, material properties of particles, and type of packing(i.e., void ratio and coordination number). In this study, consolidation tests are performed by using clay, mica and sand specimens. Shear wave velocities are measured during consolidation tests to investigate the stress-induced and inherent anisotropies through bender elements. Results show the shear wave velocities depends on the stress-induced anisotropy for round particles. Furthermore the shear wave velocity is dependent on particle alignment under the constant effective stress. This study suggests that the shear wave velocity and the shear modulus should be carefully calculated and used for the design and construction of geotechnical structures.

  • The ultrasonic guided wave phased array using magnetostrictive patch transducers is proposed. The magnetostrictive transducer has received much attention because it is cost-effective and capable to generate ultrasonic waves with a simple configuration. However, it has not been used for ultrasonic guided wave phased array applications until now. In this paper, we propose a magnetostrictive transducer based phased array system consisting of a multi-channel function generator, power amplifiers and Lamb wave magnetostrictive transducers. To check the performance of the ultrasonic guided wave phased array, several Lamb wave focusing experiments were carried out in an aluminum plate. The results demonstrated the capability of the developed array to focus the Lamb waves at specific target points.

  • This paper has been studied that ocean wave vibration power generator is composed of buoy and vibration generator to make effective use of ocean wave energy. We designed buoy to can occur resonance for dominant frequency with ocean wave. And then we fitted the natural frequency of vibration system with vibration power generator to buoy's natural frequency. And we can show that the amplitude of ocean wave up and down motion is decreased, on the other hand, the displacement of vibration system with vibration power generator is increased. Therefore, ocean wave vibration power generator which is proposed in this paper has merits not only securing its stability from surroundings but also producing more electronic power by using ocean wave energy.
