  • Kojongsi persimmon (Diospyros kaki) is the major cultivar of astringent persimmon in southern of Korea. Kojongsi persimmon leaf has been traditionally used for acute and chronic diseases in Oriental countries. The purpose of this study was undertaken to investigate the antioxidative activities of the extract of Kojongsi persimmon leaf during growth. We investigated the antioxidant effects of the persimmon leaf extracts during growth on total polyphenol, total flavonoid, electronic donating ability (DPPH), nitrite (NO) scavenging and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity. The next, we investigated the possible cell protective effects of the persimmon extract treatment against ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced injury in HaCaT keratinocytes. The contents of total polyphenol and flavonoid in leaf extract of Kojongsi persimmon were increased in time-dependent manner. In Jun, DPPH and NO radical scavenging and SOD-like activities in the leaf extract of Kojongsi persimmon was increased to the highest. However, the antioxidant activities in persimmon varieties were not any difference. The cell cytotoxicity by UVB irradation in HaCaT keratinocytes was significantly increased with the compared to the control group. However, the treatment of leaf extract of Kojongsi persimmon in HaCaT keratinocytes was shown to protective effect against UVB-induced cell cytotoxicity. These results suggest that the leaf extract of Kojongsi persimmon has potent antioxidant activity, and protective effect against UVB-induced keratinocyte injury. Thus, these properties may be contributed in the care of acute and chronic diseases.

  • Differential tolerance to protoporphyrinogen oxidase (Protox)-inhibiting herbicides, oxyfluorfen was observed between leaf ages in squash. Physiological responses to oxyfluorfen, including leaf injury, cellular leakage, accumulation of tetrapyrroles, and antioxidative enzymes activity, were investigated in leaf age classes of squash to identify mechanisms of oxyfluorfen tolerance. Leaf 1, 2, and 3 injuries for Joongangaehobak were >10,000, 1,286, and 1.6-fold higher than that of leaf 4, after treatment of oxyfluorfen. On the other hand, leaf 1, 2, and 3 injuries for Sintowjahobak were 725, 366, and >0.6-fold higher than that of leaf 4, after treatment of oxyfluorfen. However, in contrast to oxyfluorfen treatment results, leaf injury of squash leaf 4 treated with paraquat was much smaller than in leaves 1, 2 and 3. Electrolyte leakage from the tissues treated with oxyfluorfen was higher in the youngest leaf (Leaf 4) than in the older leaves 1, 2, and 3. Differential leaf response to oxyfluorfen of squash appears to be due in large part to differences in protoporphyrin IX (Proto IX), Mg-Proto IX, and Mg-Proto IX monomethyl ester accumulation in treated leaves. In contrast, leaf 4 had higher activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione reductase than leaf 1 after treatment with oxyfluorfen. However, the induction in antioxidant activity in leaf 4 was not enough to overcome the toxic effects of a Protox inhibitor, oxyfluorfen, so the leaf eventually died.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the growth characteristics and change of inorganic element in the leaf of perilla by replanting. The replanting injury in the height of perilla appeared from the 2nd and 3rd year after replanting, and the sickness of soil occurred from the 4th year. Number of node of perilla by replanting was significantly affected to the middle stage of growth, but was similar at the latter stage of growth. Weight of a leaf was the highest at the 1st and 2nd year, and decreased with the replanting. Also, the rate of dry leaf decreased with the replanting. In the content of inorganic element of the perilla leaf by replanting, N in the leaf increased with the replanting, and K and S decreased. However the content of Ca, Cu and Mn did not affected to replanting.

  • The Yongcheonppong was cultured in the form of a dense mulberry field coverd with polyethylene film and was tested in Suwon and Chunchon. The agronomic characteristic and some consideration on the result of the silkworm rearing were as follows. The Yongcheonppong was the medium budding variety and was longer in length of young shoots than the Kaeryangppong. The Yongcheonppong was higher in leaf yield in spring than the Kaeryangppong and was lower in leaf yield in autumn than the Kaeryangppong to the contrary. The Yongcheonppong was a little higher in the number of branches and was longer in the length of the branch than the Kaeryangppong and so was appropriate for rearing with mulberry shoots. Yongcheonppong was more resistant to twig blight and die-back and was a little susceptible to dwarf disease. As the Yongcheonppong was most resistant to the freezing injury, it was appropriate for the cold region and enabled the farmers to rear some amount of silkworms every year. In Chunchon, The Yongcheonppong increased by 11% in cocoon yield than the Kaeryangppong when the freezing injury occurred 1 year out of 2 years and produced about the same as the Kaeryangppong in cocoon yield when the freezing injury occurred 1 year out of 3 years.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate effects of herbicide application method on Abutilon avicennae control and corn yield at the forage experimental field, grassland and forage crop division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon from 1996 to 1997. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with three replication. The herbicide application consisted of control, 2-3 leaf stage(Dicamba), 5-6 leaf stage (Dicamba) and soil treatment(Pendimetha1in). The hybrid of corn used in this experiment was P 3352. The results obtained are summarized as follow; 1. The plant and ear height was the lowest at control. Tasseling and silking date were delayed 3-4 day at control. The length and weight of ear were the highest at Dicamba treatment in 2-3 leaf stage. 2. The herbicide injury of corn was detected slightly after 10-20 day but the injury was recovered soon. The weed control efficiency was 96.7 and 81.8% at Dicamba treatment in 2-3 and 5-6 leaf stage, respectively. 3. The fresh and dry matter yield of Dicamba treatment in 2-3 leaf stage was higher than that of control by 36%, but no significant difference was found among herbicide application method. 4. Herbicide application method had little effect on the ADF, NDF and CP contents, but the CP and IVDMD of ear were higher than that of stover. The results of this experiment indicate that the application of Dicarnba in 2-6 leaf stage of corn will remove almost all of A butilon avicennae and increase DM yield of corn.

  • This studies were carried out to elucidate the control effect of copper fungicides against some citrus diseases, assess copper spray injury on leaf and fruit of citrus by spraying of copper fungicides according to growth stages and spray seasons and by tank mixing with paraffin oil in field experiments for 3 years (2003-2005 season). As results, the control value was approximately $75\%$ against scab disease in all tested copper fungicides, $85-88\%$ to canker and $75-86\%$ to melanose. In case of leaf, the copper injury was the severest in early stage of shooting, and the injury was gradually weakened according to growth of leaf. In fruit, the copper injury was more severe in midsummer (late of July and August) than early of summer and spring season (June and ealy of July). Among copper fungicides, the bordeaux mixture which made by level of farm induced more injury compared to other copper fungicides commercialized. Less copper spray injury was observed on treatments in which copper fungicide was sprayed as tank mixtures with paraffin oil when compared to treatment which sprayed with only copper fungicide.

  • The relationship between ozone-induced damages and ethylend evolution was examined in tomato plants fumigated with ozone of 0.2 $\mu\ell/\ell$. The rate of evolution of ethylent by tomato plants was enhanced by ozone fumigation. Pretreatment of leaves with aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), an inhibitor of ethylene evolution, significantly inhibited the evolution of ethylene that was induced by ozone and concomitantly reduced the extent of ozone-induced visible damage to leaves. Treatment with 2,5-norbonadiene (NBD), and inhibitor of the action of ethylene, strongly reduced the extent of visible damage caused by ozone, even though it did not suppress the evolution of ethylene. These results indicated that ethylene might play an important role in ozone-induced plant injuries at relatively short terms of ozone fumigation. Next, we examined the effect of tiron, a scanvenger of the free-radical, on evolution of ethylene and leaf injury caused by ozone. Tiron treatment strongly reduced the extent of ozone-induced injury, but had not inhibitory effect on the evolution of ethylene from tomato leaves. This result suggests the involvement of free-radical, such as superoxide radicals, in induction of injuries caused by ozone.
