Climate in the year of 2000 was characterized as a long severe drought in tile spring, unusually high and low temperature in summer, two times of typoons, and floods by heavy rains in fall. Rice leaf and panicle blast and bacterial grain rot occurred severely comparing with 1999 and Bipolaris leaf spot spread over tile country. Phytophthora blight and anthracnose in red-pepper became epidemic especially in the late season causing severe yield losses. Tomato fusaruim wilt, CGMMV, powdery mildew, and sudden wilt syndrom of cucurbits and strawberry powdery mildew were also severe in 2000. In garlic, sclerotium rot occurred severely mainly due to the frequent rainfalls in planting time and much snowfalls in 1999's winter. Spring potato had severe infection of viruses due to a long spring drought, and fall potato had high incidence of bacterial soft rot and bacterial wilt due to fall floods by heavy rains. In sweet potato fusarium wilt was the most severe as in other year. Disease incidence of apple and pear trees was rotatively mild compared with previous years. In wheat and barley, Gibberella petch rarely occurred because of spring drought.
Defense mechanisms against anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum orbiculare on the leaf surface of cucumber plants after pre-treatment with plant growth promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR), amino salicylic acid(ASA) or C. orbiculare were compared using a fluorescence microscope. Induced systemic resistance was mediated by the pre-inoculation in the root system with PGPR strain Bacillus amylolquefaciens EXTN-1 that showed direct antifungal activity to C. gloeosporioides and C. orbiculare. Also, systemic acquired resistance was triggered by the pre-treatments on the bottom leaves with amino salicylic acid or conidial suspension of C. orbiculare. The protection values on the leaves expressing SAR were higher compared to those expressing ISR. After pre-inoculation with PGPR strains no change of the plants was found in phenotype, while necrosis or hypersensitive reaction(HR) was observed on the leaves of plants pre-treated with ASA or the pathogen. After challenge inoculation, inhibition of fungal growth was observed on the leaves expressing both ISR and SAR. HR was frequently observed at the penetration sites of both resistance-expressing leaves. Appressorium formation was dramatically reduced on the leaves of plants pre-treated with ASA, whereas EXTN-1 did not suppress the appressorium formation. ASA also more strongly inhibited the conidial germination than EXTN-1. Conversely, EXTN-1 significantly increased the frequency of callose formation at the penetration sites, but ASA did not. The defense mechanisms induced by C. orbiculare were similar to those by ASA. Based on these results it is suggested that resistance mechanisms on the leaf surface was different between on the cucumber leaves expressing ISR and SAR, resulting in the different protection values.
The severities of major tobacco diseases had been surveyed throughout northern Kyeongbuk, a major flue-cured tobacco growing district in Korea, in relation to the actual control method used by the farmers in 1992. At seedling stage, anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum nicotianae was major disease of the plant due to poor damage of the temporary transplanting pots. Mosaic caused by tobacco mosaic virus(TMV) was very severe in certain of greenhouses. Although viral disease caused by TMV, cucumber mosaic virus(CMV) and by potato virus Y(PVY) were severe in fields, but mosaic by TMV was major of the diseases. Potato virus Y was found later than that in Honam district. The late occurrence of the disease might be caused the difference between cultivating method of potato plants in northern Kyeongbuk and that in Honam district. In fields suffered from hail disaster, the damage of tobacco plants by angular leaf spot was severe. Most of tobacco growers had wrong information about the practical methods not only of milk treatment for the protection of the plants from TMV, but also of fungicide applications for the control of other major diseases. It suggested that education on the methods to the farmers must be very important for control of the diseases.

A total of 20 agricultural organic materials including inorganic compounds, plant oils and plant extracts were used in the study for assessing the control efficacy on pepper diseases. Among inorganic compounds, only copper hydroxide showed inhibitory effect on both Phytophthora capsici causing Phytophthora blight and Colletotrichum acutatum causing anthracnose. Phosphorous acid inhibited the growth of P. capsici on PDA, and Sulfur/quicklime had it on that of C. acutatum. Plant essential oil, rosemary oil, and rapeseed oil among plant oils and plant extract of Japanese apricot/ginkgo nut inhibited the mycelial growth of the two pathogens. In the screening using pepper plant seedlings, the control efficacy on Phytophthora blight in 6-leaf stage of seedling was superior to that in 4-leaf stage of seedling. A protective effect on Phytophthora blight was displayed by copper hydroxide, sulfur/quicklime, water soluble calcium, phosphorous acid, plant essential oil, and cloves extract. When C. acutatum was inoculated by the non-wound method, copper hydroxide and rapeseed oil showed excellent protective activities with control values of 91.3% and 82.6%, respectively. However, copper hydroxide did not show any activity, when C. acutatum was inoculated after wounding pepper fruits. All organic materials never showed the curative effect on Phytophthora blight and anthracnose in pepper seedling assay and fruit assay.

Between 2010 and 2012, diseases and insect pests of sweet persimmon were surveyed at sweet persimmon export complexes and non-export orchards in Suncheon, Jeonnam Province; Jinju, Changwon (Dongeup and Bukmyeon), and Gimhae, Gyeongnam Province; and Ulzu, Ulsan. The following diseases were found in the sweet persimmon orchards: angular leaf spot (Cercospora kaki), anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Colletotrichum acutatum), circular leaf spot (Mycosphaerella nawae), powdery mildew (Phyllactinia kakicola), and gray mold (Botrytis cinerea). Circular leaf spot was the most frequent and serious disease, and C. gloeosporioides and C. acutatum were found on fruits. Thirty-three insect pest species that belonged to 32 genera of 20 families in 5 orders were found in the sweet persimmon orchards; the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, was also found in the surveyed orchards. Apolygus spinolae, Pseudaulacaspis cockerelli, and Adoxophyes orana were widely found in the surveyed orchards; Spodoptera litura and Homona magnanima were also recorded. Damage by insect pests was low, and the quarantine insect pests peach pyralid moth (Dichocrocis punctiferalis) and persimmon fruit moth (Stathmopoda masinissa) were rarely or not found in the sweet persimmon export complexes. In addition, other quarantine insect pests, such as persimmon false spider mite (Tenuipalpus zhizhilashviliae) and Japanese mealybug (Planococcus kraunhiae), were not detected. These quarantine insect pests were also not found in the sorting places, storage houses, and fruits for export; however, scale insects and two-spotted spider mites were found at a low rate. Although anthracnose (C. acutatum) infested fruit was found in the storage houses, only one in Jinju and Gimhae.
Chlorella is one of the microorganisms which can live autotrophically by their own photosynthesis. It was previously revealed that pre-treatment of Chlorella fusca caused a suppression of appressorium formation on the cucumber leaves after inoculation with Colletothrichum orbiculare. In this study, the ultrastructures of C. orbiculare on the cucumber leaves pretreated with C. fusca were observed using both scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The SEM images revealed that most fungal conidia and hyphae were attached with lots of C. fusca cells. Also, the conidia could germinate but not form appressorium, which is necessary to penetrate into host tissue. These observations suggested that C. fusca adjoined to the fungus may play a role in suppression of the appressorium formation. On the other hand, the observations of TEM showed no remarkable cytological differences on the ultrastructures of the intracellular hyphae between in the pre-treated and untreated leaves. It seemed that the fungus could grow in the pre-treated plant tissues as in the untreated one. Based on these observations, it is suggested that the suppression of appressorium on the leaf surfaces by the C. fusca cells may be a main cause of the reduction of the anthracnose disease.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the runner cutting time on the growth and yield of strawberry (Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa cv. Maehyang and Seolhyang) during nursery period of two consecutive years (2009 and 2010). Strawberry runners which connected from mother plants to daughter plants were cut 30, 20, 10 and 5 days before transplanting day (11 Sep. 2009 and 10 Sep. 2010). When runner cutting time delayed, more nutrition was supplied to the daughter plant until late nursery period. It showed that there was a tendency to increase the fresh weight, crown diameter and leaf chlorophyll content. On the other hand, when the runner was cut earlier, the growth of underground part such as root weight was improved. Irrigation demand increased to 29.7% in case of runner cutting from mother plant compared with runner non-cutting treatment. In addition, infection ratio of anthracnose through runner part was 37.6% higher in case of runner cutting than that of runner non-cutting treatment. After transplanting, budding and flowering period were delayed up to 2 or 3 days because of late runner cutting. But there was no significant difference in marketable fruit yield among runner cutting times. It is recommended to conduct runner cutting 5 or 10 days before transplanting for reducing the occurrence of anthracnose.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of rain-shelter types on growth, and fruit quality of red pepper (Capsicum annuum, 'Kemmaru') cultured in paddy. Applied rain-shelter types were outfield (control), simple rain-shelter plastic house with 2 rows (2R), simple rain-shelter plastic house with 4 rows (4R), and perfect plastic house (House). The plant height was the highest in Houses treatment. There was no difference in leaf length and width among the rain-shelter treatments. The fresh and dry weight of red pepper was high in order of House > 4R > 2R > Control. The ASTA value is irregular tendency among the treatments. Hunter's color value 'a' and 'b' was not different from among the treatments. Phytophthora blight, powdery mildew, bacterial spot were not occurred in all of treatments, and Anthracnose was only occurred in control. Mite, Microcephalothrips abdominalis, and Bemisia tabaci were not occurred in all of treatments, and aphid, Helicoverpa assulta, and virus were occurred all of treatments as same degree. Our results will provide rain-shelter cultivation of red pepper can be increase dry yield and decrease disease and insects.

This experiment was carried out using artificial clay and LED in the plastic film house (irradiation time: 08:00~18:00/day). Seedlings (n = 63 per $3.3m^2$) of ginseng was planted on May 17, 2018. LED was combined with red and blue light in a 3:1 ratio and irradiated with different light intensity. The average air temperature from April to September was $12.3^{\circ}C$$-26.0^{\circ}C$ and it was the the highest at $26.0^{\circ}C$ in August. The test area where fluorescent lamp was irradiated tended to be somewhat higher than the LED irradiation area. The chemical properties of the test soil are as follows. pH levels was 5.3~5.5, EC levels 0.45~0.52 dS/m and OM levels 33~37%. The total nitrogen content was 0.35~0.47% and the available $P_2O_5$ contents was 13.7~16.0 mg/kg, which was lower than the suitable level of 70~200 mg/kg. Exchangeable cations K and Mg contents were within acceptable ranges, but the Ca contents was $28{\sim}38cmol^+/kg$ levels higher than the permissible level ($2{\sim}6cmol^+/kg$). Germination of ginseng leaves took 8~9 days and the overall germination rate was 70~75%. The photometric characteristics of LED light intensity are as follows. The greater the light intensity, the higher the PAR (Photosynthetic Action Radiation) value, illuminance and solar irradiation. Photosynthetic rate was also increased with higher light intensity was investigated at $1.7{\sim}3.2{\mu}mol\;CO_2/m^2/s$. Leaf temperature ($23.7{\sim}24.8^{\circ}C$) by light intensity was the same trend. The growth of aerial parts (plant height etc.) were generally excellent when irradiated with 3 times the light intensity, the growth of the ginseng aerial parts were excellent as follows. The plant height was 42.6 cm, stem length was 25.2 cm, leaf length was 9.6 cm and stem diameter was 5.0 mm. The growth of underground part (root length etc.) was the same, and the root length was 24.4 cm, the tap root length was 6.0 cm, diameter of taproot was 18.2 mm and the fresh root weight was 17.2 g. There were no disease incidence such as Alternaria blight, Gray mold and Anthracnose. Disease of Damping off occurred 2.2~3.6% and incidence ratio of rusty root ginseng was 14.6~20.7%. Leaf discoloration rate was 13.7~48.9% and increased with increasing light intensity. Ginsenoside content of ginseng by light intensity is under analysis.
