This study was carried out to examine the compressive strength characteristics of solids solidified with the lead sludge with mixture of cement and fly ashes as additive. And the additives are commercial fly ash and ESP(Electrostatic precipitator) fly ash. The compressive strength of solidified lead sludge solid was increased by adding fly ash up to 46~62%, which was the results of pozzolanic reaction. When replaced the cement with 10%of commercial fly ash, the solid showed the highest value $210{\;}kg/cm^2$, and the solidification conditions were 0.55 of the water/cement ratio and curing for 14 days. Also, the results of leaching test by EPT(Environmental Protection Agency-Toxicity Test) were showed that the solidified lead has leached out under 10%, which was less than 0.173 mg/L of EPA standard. As leaching solutions, the demineralized water, 0.1N acetic acid solution, and synthetic brine were used. and the observations by SEM of the solidified lead-laden solid after EPT leaching test were indicated the severe erosion on solid surface.
The effects of sludge and fertilizer application on germination and seedling growth of woody plants on heavy metal mine tailings were evaluated by greenhouse experiment. Two different mine tailings (Lead-zinc mine tailings from Kwangmyong, Kyonggi-do and tungsten mine tailings from Sangdong. Kangwon-do). four fertilizer treatments (N +P +K: 20, 40, 60, and 80 kg/m$^3$), and four sewage sludge treatments (5.5, 11, 22.5, and 45 Mg/m$^3$) were used in the experiment. Tested plants were Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis, Amorpha fruticosa, and Alnus hirsuta. There were three replicates for each treatment. In addition, vermiculite was used instead of mine tailings to determine the effect of physical amendments. Fifty seeds of a species were sown in a pot (upper diameter 13.5 cm, depth 10 cm) and seedling emergence were recorded daily for 30 days. The highest germination rate was 53% for all treatments. Germination rate of Larix leptolepis was lowest among the four species studied. One month later after seeding, seedlings were thinned and only 5 seedling were left in each pot, and fertilizer and sewage sludge were applied once again. Growth of seedlings were determined for 10 weeks since then. Most plants grew very poorly or died within 5 weeks on lead/zinc mine tailings from Kwangmyong. The analysis of heavy metal contents by the total dissolution method showed that heavy metals generally increased in the order of tungsten mine tailings from Sangdong < sewage sludge from Puchon < lead/zinc mine tailings from Kwangmyong. Growth of woody plants was improved significantly by the fertilizer treatments on tungsten mine tailings. In contrast. survival and growth of woody plants were not affected significantly by the sewage sludge treatment on both tailings. This study shows that fertilizer applied to established seeded stands may provide some benefits in terms of increased ground cover in the field. It is suggested that reclamation should be proceeded by the study of the physico-chemical and biological characteristics of mine tailings.
Utilization of sewage sludge for industrial fuel should be considered in appropriate calory with low emission of environmental pollutants and the amount of sewage sludge for continuously long-time operation. For the low grade fuel(<4,000kcal/kg), one of proper processes is that coal and oil are added into sewage sludge to remove impurities and increase calory(>7,000kcal/kg) and the amount of fuel having sewage sludge. Recently, 2-step agglomeration has been attempted by secondarily agglomerate sewage sludge onto the primary nuclei formed by agglomeration of coal and oil. Furthermore, sawdust and waste oil can substitute about 1/3 each for coal and mineral oil consumed in this process, which will lead to securing alternative energy resources from environmental pollutants as well as cost reduction.
This study was performed to investigate the possible uses of waste sludge for the removal of heavy metal ions. The adsorption experiments were conducted with wastes such as sewage treatment sludge, water treatment sludge and oyster shell to evaluate their sorption characteristics. Heavy metals selected were cadmium, copper and lead. in the sorption experiments on the sewage treatment sludge, water treatment sludge, oyster shell and soil, sorption occurred in the beginning and it reached equilibrium after 40 minutes on the oyster shell and 4 hour on the sewage treatment sludge and water treatment sludge. Results of Freundlich isotherms indicated that sewage treatment sludge could be properly used as an adsorbent for heavy metals and sorption strength of heavy metals was in the order of Pb > Cu > Cd. In the influence of pH on the adsorbents, sorption rate was more than 80% in pH 4 and most of heavy metals were adsorbed in pH 9. Adsorption rate of Cd decreased with decreasing pH and then adsorption rate of Cu was lower in soil.
This study proposed a low temperature hydrothermal carbonization to treat and recycle sewage sludge and determined the optimal conditions for the biochar production. The physical and chemical properties of biochar were analyzed and its sorption capacity for heavy metals was evaluated. To produce biochar, 50 g of sewage sludge was heated at 220, 230, and $240^{\circ}C$ for 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and 10 hours in a reactor. The optimal conditions to produce biochar was $230^{\circ}C$ and 8 hours. Sorption capacity tests were conducted for arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni). Among them, lead was shown the highest heavy metal adsorption efficiency of biochar, followed by copper, cadmium, zinc, and nickel, but arsenic was hardly adsorbed overall.

The objective of this research is to evaluate various reclamation methods of sewage sludge cake after treating with microwave under optimum conditions. In this study the sewage sludge cakes used from S and N wastewater treatment plants in the P city. Microwave with an induced electricity heating way was employed for dehydration of sewage sludge cake. Microwave operation conditions is 2,450 MHz of frequency and the power with 1 to 4 kW. This sewage sludge cake had a moisture content of 70%. The moisture content of the sludge decreased notable up to 2%(wt) resulted in breaking of cell wall. When the treated sewage sludge cake mixed with soils could be applied to use midterm and last cover material soils. Moreover, the adsorption ability of heavy metals such as copper, lead, chromium and cadmium was greatly enhanced by treated sewage sludge cake. Within 30 minutes, 1ppm of copper, chromium and cadmium and 10ppm of lead with 1g of the treated sewage sludge cake in $100m{\ell}$ were below detection. It was possible to use the treated sewage sludge cake as an absorbent for absorption of toxic heavy metals. Results from this research indicated that using of microwave radiation was an effective method for treating sewage sludge cake economically and environmental. A point of view of reclamation, the treated sewage sludge cake appeared to be feasible with an adsorption of heavy metals in steady of using expensive yellow earth.
We have investigated biosorption kinetics and equilibrium of $Pb^2+$ and $Cr^2+$ using waste sludge, and separation efficiency of waste sludge by dissolved air flotation was evaluated in the various A/S ratio. The biosorption capacity and contact time were shown as a simulation of biosorption equilibrium and kinetics models. Biosorption equilibrium of the $Pb^2+$ and $Cr^2+$ onto the waste sludge could be fitted by the Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, and Koble-Corrigan equation. The kinetics could be fitted by a pseudo-second-order rate equation more than a pseudo-first-order rate equation. The separation efficiency of waste sludge using DAF was kept above 90%.

At the latest industry develops, heavy metals or sludge contaminated surrounding farm land and rivers. In this study, wished to solve problem by saying contaminated sludge and tailing and heavy metals to do solidification using Magnesia phosphate cement. Confirmed through above experiment that magnesia is effect in solidification and stabilization of chromium and lead.
Laboratory experiments for the removal efficiency of heavy metals in land application of sludge, the accumulation and translocation of heavy metals in x plants after transplanting, and the responses of Minari growth with different ratio of land application of sludge were conducted to determine the potential ability of bioremediation with Minari plants. The removal rate and translocation of copper. zinc. lead. and cadmium in soil and plants were compared after transplanting the Minari plants to soil treated with different ratio of sludge. The removal efficiency of heavy metals in soil incorporated with sludge was different with application ratio, but increased with growing periods of Minari plants. The removal efficiency of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd ranged from 67 to 74% from 51% to 63%, from 37% to 71%. and from 15% to 25% after 45 days of transplanting. respectively. The amount removed the copper value. 65.9 mg/kg, observed to be highest in soil incorporated 3% sludge after 45 days. The translocation of Cu. Zn. Pb. and Cd from shoots to roots ranged from 18 to 53%, from 17 to 32%, from 14 to 49%, and from 23 to 38% over growing periods. respectively. In plant responses it appeared to be inhibited the plant growth in the treatment compared with the control at early stage of growth. However, the fresh weights of Minari plant increased from 12.5 to 62.5% in the sludge application after 45 days relative to the control. Therefore the Minari might play a useful role in bioremediation of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd in the land application of sludge.
A strain of Alcaligenes sp. Isolated from the sludge of industrial area was found to uptake 24.1 mg lead/g dried cell during incubation in medium containing 100g/ml of lead. Analyses of cellular subfractions reveal that fractions of cell wall contain 88.6 percent of lead found associated with the cells and the remainder is found associated with the cytoplasmic fraction. Ultrastructural examination of the cells cultured in media containing 500 and 1000g/ml of lead showed no major irregularities between cells of the treated and untreated cultures.
