  • The finite-difference three-dimensional boundary layer procedure of Chang and Patel is modified and applied to solve the boundary layer development on the automobile surface. The inviscid pressure distribution needed to solve the boundary layer equations is obtained by using a low order panel method. The plane of symmetry boundary layer exhibits the strong streamline divergence up to the midbody and convergence thereafter. The streamline divergence in front of the windshield helps the boundary layer to overcome the sever adverse pressure gradient and avoid the separation. The relaxation of the pressure right after the top of the wind-shield, on the other hand, makes the overly thinned boundary layer to readjust and prompts the streamlines to converge into the symmetry plane before the external streamlines do. The three-dimensional characteristics are less apparent after the midbody and the boundary layer is similar to that of the two-dimensional flow. The results of the off-plane-of-symmetry boundary layer are also presented.

  • We have seen the effects of hole-injection buffer layer in organic light-emitting diodes using copper phthalocyanine(CuPc), poly(vinylcarbazole)(PVK), and Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS) in a device structure of ITO/buffer/TPD/$Alq_3$/Al. Polymer PVK and PEDOT:PSS buffer layer was made using spin casting method and the CuPc layer was made using thermal evaporation. Current-voltage characteristics, luminance-voltage characteristics and efficiency of device were measured at room temperature with a thickness variation of buffer layer. We have obtained an improvement of the external quantum efficiency by a factor of two, four, and two and half when the CuPc, PVK, and PEDOT:PSS buffer layer are used, respectively. The enhancement of the efficiency is attributed to the improved balance of holes and elelctrons due to the use of hole-injection buffer layer. The CuPc and PEDOT:PSS layer functions as a hole-injection supporter and the PVK layer as a hole-blocking one.

  • A numerical study is made of the spin-up from rest of a three-layer fluid in a closed, vertically-mounted cylinder. The densities in the upper layer $\rho_1$, middle layer $\rho_2$ and lower layer $\rho_3\;are\;\rho_3\;>\;\rho_2\;>\;\rho_1$, and the kinematic viscosities are left arbitrary. The representative system Ekman number is small. Numerical solutions are obtained to the time-dependent axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations, and the treatment of the interfaces is modeled by use of the Height of Liquid method. Complete three-component velocity fields, together with the evolution of the interface deformations, are depicted. At small times, when the kinematic viscosity in the upper layer is smaller than in the middle layer, the top interface rises (sinks) in the central axis (peripheral) region. When the kinematic viscosity in the lower layer is smaller than in the middle layer, the bottom interface rises (sinks) in the periphery (axis) region. Detailed shapes of interfaces are illustrated for several cases of exemplary viscosity ratios.

  • The analytic and numerical solution of the 1$\frac{1}{2}$-layer and 2$\frac{1}{2}$-layer models are derived. The large coastal-sea level drop and the fast westward speed of the anticyclonic gyre due to strong offshore winds using two ocean models are investigated. The models are forced by wind stress fields similar in structure to the intense mountain-pass jets(${\sim}$20 dyne/$cm^{2}$) that appear in the Gulfs of Tehuantepec and Papagayo in the Central America for periods of 3${\sim}$7 days. Analytic and numerical solutions compare favorably with observations, the large sea-level drop (${\sim}$30 cm) at the coast and the fast westward propagation speeds (${\sim}$13 km/day) of the gyres. The coastal sea-level drop is enhanced by several factors: horizontal mixing, enhanced forcing, coastal geometry, and the existence of a second active layer in the 2$\frac{1}{2}$-layer model. Horizontal mixing enhances the sea-level drop because the coastal boundary layer is actually narrower with mixing. The forcing ${\tau}$/h is enhanced near the coast where h is thin. Especially, in analytic solutions to the 2$\frac{1}{2}$-layer model the presence of two baroclinic modes increases the sea-level drop to some degree. Of theses factors the strengthened forcing ${\tau}$/h has the largest effect on the magnitude of the drop, and when all of them are included the resulting maximum drop is -30.0 cm, close to observed values. To investigate the processes that influence the propagation speeds of anticyclonic gyre, several test wind-forced calculations were carried out. Solutions to dynamically simpler versions of the 1$\frac{1}{2}$-layer model show that the speed is increased both by ${\beta}$-induced self-advection and by larger h at the center ofthe gyres. Solutions to the 2$\frac{1}{2}$-layer model indicate that the lower-layer flow field advects the gyre westward and southward, significantly increasing their propagation speed. The Papagayo gyre propagates westward at a speed of 12.8 km/day, close to observed speeds.

  • In the past decades, green energy, such as solar energy, wind power, hydropower, biomass energy, geothermal energy, and so on, has been widely investigated and developed to solve energy shortage. Recently, organic solar cells have attracted much attention, because they have many advantages, including low-cost, flexibility, light weight, and easy fabrication [1-3]. Organic solar cells are as a potential candidate of the next generation solar cells. In this abstract, to improve the power conversion efficiency and the stability, the inverted polymer solar cells with various structures were developed [4-6]. The novel cell structures included the P3HT:PCBM inverted polymer solar cells with AZO nanorods array, with pentacene-doped active layer, and with extra P3HT interfacial layer and PCBM interfacial layer. These three difference structures could respectively improve the performance of the P3HT:PCBM inverted polymer solar cells. For the inverted polymer solar cells with AZO nanorods array as the electronic transportation layer, by using the nanorod structure, the improvement of carrier collection and carrier extraction capabilities could be expected due to an increase in contact area between the nanorod array and the active layer. For the inverted polymer solar cells with pentacene-doped active layer, the hole-electron mobility in the active layer could be balanced by doping pentacene contents. The active layer with the balanced hole-electron mobility could reduce the carrier recombination in the active layers to enhance the photocurrent of the resulting inverted polymer solar cells. For the inverted polymer solar cells with extra P3HT and PCBM interfacial layers, the extra PCBM and P3HT interfacial layers could respectively improve the electron transport and hole transport. The extra PCBM interfacial layer served another function was that led more P3HT moving to the top side of the absorption layer, which reduced the non-continuous pathways of P3HT. It indicated that the recombination centers could be further reduced in the absorption layer. The extra P3HT interfacial layer could let the hole be more easily transported to the MoO3 hole transport layer. The high performance of the novel P3HT:PCBM inverted polymer solar cells with various structures were obtained.

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of binder properties in pre-coating layer on the characteristics of top-coating layer and print mottle of coated paper. Four different latices were used as a binder in pre-coating layer, and coating color prepared with a same formulation was applied for top-coating. The properties and print mottle of coated paper were evaluated. It was found that glass transition temperature (Tg) was the important factor to control the properties of pre- and top-coating layer. PPS roughness of coated paper was decreased and paper gloss was increased with applying binder which has lower Tg. Properties of top-coating layer were affected by the binder used in pre-coating layer. Print mottle of coated paper was improved with using binder which has lower Tg in pre-coating layer. These results indicate that final printability and properties of top-coating layer can be improved with using suitable binder in pre-coating layer.

  • The properties of ZrN layer deposited by Sputtering system have been investigated in the application of diffusion barrier layer to copper. ZrN layer exhibited a excellent barrier property up to $700^{\circ}$ and higher resistivity. If an excess $O_2$is protected during the process of ZrN deposition, ZrN layer will be possible to use a diffusion barrier layer to copper.

  • In this letter, we propose a cross-layer technique jointly considering modulation coding schemes (MCSs) of medium access control (MAC) layer, source significance information (SSI) and error concealment unit of application (APP) layer, and channel quality information (CQI) of physical (PHY) layer. We demonstrate the improved video quality by the proposed technique when H.264 videos are streamed over Rayleigh fading wireless channels.
