  • In those six kinds of diamine salt crystal of which their structures had already been determined up to date, commonly one molecule of diamine and two molecules of acid were combined; although the crystal of benzidine perchlorate, only one molecule each of benzidine and perchloric acid were combined. At the case of benzidine perchlorate, one molecule acts as the role of two molecules by coincidence of the center of symmetry point of both the lattice and molecule, and perchlorate ion is locating symmetrically between two -$NH_2$ groups of different benzidine molecule, therefore benzidine and acid could be combined together with 1:1 by mole ratio. When forming the salt with diamine and acid, the combining mole ratio would be determined in accordance with the relationship between the symmetry element that presented by the space group and the symmetry element of diamine salt melecule.

  • New design method about the spread footing was developed using only soil and geosynthetics. This footing will be able to replace the concrete footing at constructing the foundation of small structures. As shown in Fig-3(b), after excavating the ground in semicircular shape, geosynthetics is layed on the semicircular shape of ground and let the soil filled. Geosynthetics of upper side are fixed tightly each other It can be thought to be a kind of great bag with semicircular shape. We performed two kinds of experiments to investigate the deformation and the failure shape of spread footing reinforced by geosynthetics. First, after making model ground with aluminium rods, the lattice point of 1cm ${\times}$ 1cm size of the side of aluminium rods have been painted with various kinds of colors. We have observed the movement of painted rods during loading. Second, we have taken pictures about failure process using B-shutter method. Analysing the behavior of model ground reinforced in a semicircular shape, we could know the reinforced one has much greater and wider plastic area than unreinforced one at failure. Based on the experimental results, new design method was proposed, which has a possibility to apply at the field works.

  • Lithium insertion has been studied in a number of vanadium oxides with special regard to their application as the active materials in rechargeable lithium cells. Very high stoichiometric energy densities for lithium insertion are found for several of these materials. Some vanadium oxides, e.g. V$_2$ $O_{5}$ and V$_{6}$ $O_{13}$, are now being used in commercially developed rechargeable Li batteries. Another material which is receiving remarkable attention for this kind of cells is LiV$_3$ $O_{8}$. In variety of ternary lithium-vanadium oxides, the lithium content can be varied between certain limits without major changes in the vanadium oxygen lattice. In our worts, the oxides which do net form these thermodynamically stable bronzes can still accommodate large amounts of lithium at ambient temperature, forming kinetically stable insertion compounds. These compounds owe their existence to the whereas lithium is easily introduced into these open structures. The oxides investigated are rather poor electronic conductors; the conductivity decrease with increase in the lithium content. Improvements in the electrode fabrication technique are needed to alleviate this Problem.oblem.

  • (PZT, PST, PT)/ YBCO structured have been grown on single crystal $LaAlO_3$ using in-situ Nb:YAG pulsed laser deposition technique. The optimum conditions of fabrication for high quality films have been established under various oxygen pressure. TBCO was used as a metallic electrode for polarizing ferroelectric thin fillms. Lattice mismatch of these materials were found to be with in 3%. As a result XRD patterns and rocking curves, (PZT, PST, PT)/ YBCO multiayered thin films on $LaAlO_3$ substrates showed preferred orientation to c-axis. For invastigation on electrical properties of ferroelectric thin films, remanent polaiztion $P_r$ and coercive field $E_c$ were measured for three samples. At each optimum condition, they showed the values of P_r=60 \mu C/cm^2 and E_c=240kV/ cm for PT, 30\mu C/cm^2 and 105kV/cm for PZT, 1.5\mu C/cm^2$ and 15kV/cm for PST. Frequency dependence of dielectric properties of ferroelectric thin fillms was also investigated. As a result, it showed the frequency dependence was relatively small in the range of 10Hz~10kHz.

  • Aging phenomena of 0.2PMN-0.8PZT multilayered ceramic actuators(MCA) have been investigated at the room temperature. The piezoelectric materials were synthesized as conventional ceramic process, and MCA were fabricatedby tape casting methods. The crystalline structures and lattice parameters were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis, showing the structure was tetragonal and c/a was about 1.01. And, the effective electromechanical coupling coefficient keff and pseudo-piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$were measured. Variable unipolar electric fields, $2{\sim}4kV/mm$, were applied to MCh to investigate the aging characteristics. After 2 kV/mm unipolar electric field, keff and $d_{33}$ were 0.454 and 4.44 respectively. The measured and simulated values using for aging phenomena analysis, had a good fit to the linear logarithmic stretched exponential law.

Field measurements of wind-induced transmission tower foundation loads

  • This paper discusses some of the findings arising from long-term monitoring of the wind effects on a transmission tower located on an exposed site in South-West England. Site wind speeds have been measured, together with the foundation loads at the base of each of the four legs. The results show good correlation between the wind speeds and leg strains (loads) for a given wind direction, as expected, for wind speeds in excess of 10 m/s. Comparisons between the measured strains and those determined from the UK Code of Practice for lattice towers (BS8100), for the same wind speed and direction, show that the Code over-estimates most of the measured foundation loads by a moderate amount of about 14% at the higher wind speeds. This tends to confirm the validity of the Code for assessing design foundation loads. A finite element analysis model has been used to examine the dynamic behaviour of the tower and conductor system. This shows that, in the absence of the conductor, the tower alone has similar natural frequencies of approximately 2.2 Hz in the both the first (transversal) and second (longitudinal) modes, whilst for the complete system and conductor oscillations dominate, giving similar frequencies of approximately 0.1 Hz for both the first and second modes.

  • Octahedral shaped single crystalline undoped and Ga-doped indium oxide nano-and microcrystals were fabricated using vapor-solid growth process. Effects of Ga doping on the crystallinity, defect structure, and optical properties of the nano-/microstructures have been studied using scanning electron microscopy, microRaman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. It has been observed that incorporation of Ga does not affect the morphology of $In_2O_3$ structures due to its smaller ionic radius, and similar oxidation state as that of In. However, incorporation of Ga in high concentration (~3.31 atom %) causes lattice compression, reduces optical band gap and defect induced CL emissions of $In_2O_3$ nano-/microcrystals. The single crystalline Ga-doped, $In_2O_3$ nano-/microcrystals with low defect contents are promising for optoelectronic applications.

  • An epitaxial $\beta-FeSi_2$ structure on Si (001) substrate was calculated by using density functional theory (DFT). Unit cell of orthorhombic $\beta-FeSi_2$ and $\sqrt{2}\times\sqrt{2}\times2$ supercell were calculated to find the energetically favorable structures first. The $\chi$- and y-direction axes of $\beta-FeSi_2$ were changed into y- and z-direction axes to match its structure with that of Si, to minimize the lattice mismatch between $\beta-FeSi_2$ and Si. Distance between the Si (001) surface and the $\beta-FeSi_2$ surface was varied to find an optimum distance between them, resulting in 0.825 $\AA$.

  • Crystallographic and magnetic properties of ;$LaFe_{1-x}Ga_xO_3$($\chi$= 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7) were studied using XRD and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The crystal structures were found to be orthorhombic and the lattice parameters $\alpha$, b, and c were found to decrease with increasing Ga substitution. M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra were obtained at various absorber temperatures ranging from 20 K to 750 K. The M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra were all sextets below $T_N$ and were all singlets above $T_N$. Asymmetric broadening of the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectral lines at 20 K was explained by the multitude of possible environments for an iron nucleus. As the temperature increases to $T_N$, a systematic line broadening in M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra was observed and interpreted to originate from different temperature dependencies of the magnetic hyperfine fields at various iron sites.

  • Si PIN diodes are subject to be damaged from the exposure of fast neutron by displacement of Si lattice structure. The defects are effective recombination centers for carriers which migrate through the base region of the PIN diode when forward voltage is applied. It causes an increase in current and a decrease in resistivity of the diode. This paper presents the development of a neutron sensor based on displacement damage effect. PIN diodes having various structures were made bymicro-fabrication process, and neutron beam test was performed to identify neutron damage effect to the diode. From a result of the test, it was shown that the forward voltage drop of the diode, at a constant current, has good linearity for neutron dosage. Also it was found that the newton dosage can be measured by the pin diode neutron dosimeter with constant current power.
