Latex modification of concrete provides the material with higher flexural strength, as well as high bond strength and reduced water permeability. However, If the thermal expansion properties of overlay concrete (latex-modified concretes) are big different from that of substrate (ordinary portland cement concrete), these would cause a big interfacial stresses and result in premature failure. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to investigate thermal expansion characteristics of latex-modified concrete with cement types. The result of thermal expansion showed the coefficient of thermal expansion of concretes increased with latex inclusion. The coefficient of thermal expansion of RSLMC was a little smaller than that of LMC, which might be due to the finer cement grain, compacter internal, and stiffer properties of concrete. However, the coefficients of LMC and RSLMC were quite similar to that of ordinary cement concrete. Thus, this would not cause an interfacial stresses and will enable to ensure long-term performance of concrete bridge deck overlays.
SBR latex, polyurethane latex and epoxy latex were separately mixed with polyvinyl acetate emulsion. The various physical properties were examined for the mixtures. Epoxy mixtures gave a transparent film. Both polyurethane and SBR mixtures showed opaque film with high viscosity. In SBR and polyurethane increase in hardness was dependent on the evaporation rate of water, but in epoxy it was dependent on the degrees of crosslink. Epoxy's showed excellent water-resistance. SBR showed a good flexural strength and impact strength. When vinyl acetate emulsion was mixed with less than 10% latex paper tube showed the ductile fracture, but over latex content 20%, it showed the brittle fracture.
For the purpose of development of the latex suitable for latex modified concrete, experimental researches on the preparation of carboxylated styrene butadiene latex by the method of the two-step emulsion polymerization and application to concrete were performed. Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate and sodium salt of lauryl sulfonate were selected as anionic emulsifiers, and nonylphenoxy poly(ethyleneoxy) ethanols (n=10, 20, 40) as latex stabilizer. Potassium persulfate and sodium bisulfite were used as redox initiator, besides $Na_2HPO_4$ and $K_2CO_3$ as electrolytes. Polymerization recipe of latex suitable for latex modified concrete were suggested from the experimental researches on the effects of anionic emulsifiers and their concentration on the polymerization stability, and the effect of electrolytes concentration on the particle size of latex. Physical properties, such as slump, air contents, compressive and flexural strength, of latex prepared by suggested polymerization recipe were examined. The experimental results showed that latex modified concrete satisfied the quality standards in slump and air contents. Furthermore, it was turned out that the compressive and the flexural strength of latex modified concrete with 28 days curing time showed appreciably improvements.

Kevlar was chemically surface modified with resorcinol-formaldehyde(RF) prepolymer and VP rubber latex for application to high strength tirecords. RF prepolymer was easily obtained by polymerization at room temperature in the presence of a base catalyst. The mechanical and thermal properties of Kevlar were not significantly changed during surface treated under various conditions. The change of adhesion with rubber were investigated through H-test method. Maximum increase of adhesion force between rubber and Kevlar was obtained up to 40% than that of untreated one when the fiber was soaked in RFL dipping solution and thermally treated at $170^{\circ}C$ for 3 - 5min.
Polymerization of carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex takes longer time than that of acrylic emulsion due to delocalization of radical in butadiene unit having conjugated double bond. A latex stability is the most important properties owing to use intact without separating polymer from base latex. For reducing polymerization time without decreasing any properties of latex, carbon tetra-chloride which has been used as the most popular chain transfer agent was replaced to combination of tert-dodecylmercaptane and ${\alpha}$-methylstyrene dimer. The replacement yielded reducement or 2 hr in polymerization time. In the increment step, charge amount of acrylic acid was limited to 0.3 part to restrain viscosity enhancement. Just after initial step, addition of 0.1 part acrylamide prevent polymer chain from diffusing between two region followed by giving hardness and final good adhesive force to latex particles.
PURPOSES : This study aims to develop a sealant for use in the installation of Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) sensor for asphalt concrete or cement concrete pavements. METHODS : In order to investigate the properties of various sealants that were mixed with latex and carbon fiber, various test methods were adopted, such as bituminous bond strength test, softening point test, and cone penetration test. To evaluate moisture susceptibility, the BBS test was conducted under moist condition. The bond strength ratio (BSR) was calculated based on tensile strength ratio method. RESULTS : The sealant's properties significantly varied according to the amount of latex or carbon fiber. The usage of latex marginally enhanced the cone penetration test result, notwithstanding reduced asphalt content. This implies that the sealant will be proper cold temperature reason. Moreover, the addition of latex and carbon fiber evidently increased the softening point. This indicates that the tendency of the material to flow at elevated temperatures is encountered during service. With the addition of latex and carbon fiber, the moisture susceptibility measured with BSR improved marginally, while the bond strength under dry condition decreased marginally. Sealant F displays the highest bond strength and BSR under limited test conditions. CONCLUSIONS : According to the proportion of latex and carbon fiber mixed, properties of sealant, such as softening point, cone penetration, and BSR varied marginally. This indicates that the sealant has to be applied considering the environmental condition, to improve service life.
This study focused on the investigation of compressive and flexural strengths development, and bond strength of latex modified concrete in order to validate the feasibility of application into concrete bridge deck overlay. Pull-out bond test was used for evaluating the bond strength of latex modified concrete to substrate. The main experimental variables were latex-cement ratio, surface preparation and moisture levels. The compressive strength of latex modified concrete decreased slightly and the flexural strength increased as the latex content increased from 5% to 20%. This might be due to the flexibility latex filled in voids and interconnections of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, respectively. In general, increasing the amount of latex will produce concrete with increased tensile and flexural strength and lower modulus of elasticity. Significant improvements in bond strength between new and existing concrete were achieved through the modification of the new concrete bridge deck overlay by latex polymers. The effect of surface preparation on bond of latex modified concrete to conventional concrete were significant at the conditions by sand paper and wire brush. A better bond could be achieved by rough surface rather than smooth. The saturated condition of surface is the most appropriate moisture level among the considered followed by dry condition and wet condition.
The permeable polymer-modified concrete has a lot of internal voids, which has more excellent performance in permeability and durability than asphalt and cement concrete. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to ascertain the strength properties of water-permeable polymer concretes with SBR latex and redispersible polymer powder. The water-permeable polymer concretes using SBR latex and redispersible polymer powder with water-binder ratio of 29 %, polymer-cement ratios of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 % are prepared, and tested for compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, water permeablility. From the test results, improvements in the strength properties of the water-permeable polymer concretes due to the addition of the SBR latex and redispersible polymer powder are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of re-vibration and curing temperature onto the physical properties of latex-modified concrete with ordinary cement and rapid-setting cement, and thus to provide a guide line of re-vibration and curing conditions for good quality controls. The main experimental variables included two cement types(ordinary portland cement, rapid-setting cement), curing Temperature($10^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$), re-vibration methods(continued, intermittent), and re-vibration times(initial setting, one day after mixing). The experimental results showed that the re-vibration affected little to the mechanical properties of LMC and RSLMC, while, the curing temperature a quite some. The early strength development was the highest at $20^{\circ}C$ curing temperature, and decreased at higher temperature. The permeability of concrete generally decreased with curing time. The rapid chloride permeability was a function of time and temperature. The chloride permeability of RSLMC was so small and negligible.
