To analyze the lateral load-deflection behavior of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts, a series of lateral pile load tests were performed. The test results were compared with the results from various analytical methods for lateral pile behaviors using the coefficients of subgrade reaction ($k_h$) estimated by pressuremeter test (PMT) and standard penetration test (SPT). As a result, it was found that the analytical methods using the $k_h$ estimated by SPT N value were not suitable for evaluating the pile head lateral load-deflections of the piles within the allowable deflection. However, the methods using the $k_h$ calculated from PMT were able to represent the initial lateral behavior at the head of the piles fairly well. Also, the method by the pressuremeter curve, which was applied directly to the p-y curve of the piles, offered a reasonable lateral behavior estimation by applying the correction factor to the pile materials.

The behaviour of steel column at elevated temperature is significantly different than that at ambient temperature due to its changes in the mechanical properties with temperature. Reported literature suggests that steel column may become vulnerable when exposed to fire condition, since its strength and capacity decrease rapidly with temperature. The present study aims at investigating the lateral load resistance of non-insulated steel columns under fire exposure through finite element analysis. The studied parameters include moment-rotation behaviour, lateral load-deflection behaviour, stiffness and ductility of columns at different axial load levels. It was observed that when the temperature of the column was increased, there was a significant reduction in the lateral load and moment capacity of the non-insulated steel columns. Moreover, it was noted that the stiffness and ductility of steel columns decreased sharply with the increase in temperature, especially for temperatures above $400^{\circ}C$. In addition, the lateral load capacity and the moment capacity of columns were plotted against fire exposure time, which revealed that in fire conditions, the non-insulated steel columns experience substantial reduction in lateral load resistance within 15 minutes of fire exposure.

The ship plating is generally subjected to combined in-plane load and lateral pressure loads. In-plane loads include axial load and edge shear, which are mainly induced by overall hull girder bending and torsion of the vessel. Lateral pressure is due to water pressure and cargo. These load components are not always applied simultaneously, but more than one can normally exist and interact. Hence, for more rational and safe design of ship structures, it is of crucial importance to bitter understand the interaction relationship of the buckling and ultimate strength for ship plating under combined loads. Actual ship plates are subjected to relatively small water pressure except for the impact load due to slamming and panting etc. The present paper describes an accurate and fast procedure for analyzing the elastic-plastic large deflection behavior up to the ultimate limit state of ship plates under combined loads. In this paper, the ultimate strength characteristics of plates under axial compressive loads and lateral pressure loads are investigated through ANSYS elastic-plastic large deflection finite element analysis with varying lateral pressure load level.
This paper presents a curvature method for analysis of beam-columns with different materials and arbitrary cross-section shapes and subjected to combined biaxial moments and axial load. Both material and geometric nonlinearities (the p-delta effect in this case) were incorporated. The proposed method considers biaxial curvatures and uniform normal strains of discrete cross-sections of beam-columns as basic unknowns, and seeks for a solution of the column deflection curve that satisfies force equilibrium conditions. A piecewise representation of the beam-column deflection curve is constructed based on the curvatures and angles of rotation of the segmented cross-sections. The resulting bending moments were evaluated based on the deformed column shape and the axial load. The moment curvature relationship and the beam-column deflection calculation are presented in matrix form and the Newton-Raphson method is employed to ensure fast and stable convergence. Comparison with results of analytic solutions and eccentric compression tests of wood beam-columns implies that this method is reliable and effective for beam-columns subjected to eccentric compression load, lateral bracings and complex boundary conditions.

The nonlinear analysis of ship plating with flat bar stiffners has been carried out by the finite element method based on the load incremental approach. The large deflection analysis has been done by using the Lagrangian description. The elastoplastic analysis has been performed by adopting the flow theory of plasticity and the von Mises yield condition. The layered elements are used to show the process of yielding through the plate thickness in the elasto-plastic analysis. The following results are obtained; 1) According to the large deflection analysis, it is shown that the small deflection theory to the plate is applicable in the range of the lateral deflection-the thickness ratio $w/h{\leqq}0.3$ and ship plating in the range of $w/h{\leqq}0.5$. 2) By means of the elasto-plastic analysis, it is found that the maximum load-carrying capacity of the plate increases as much as 1.8 times of the initial yield load in the case of the simply supported condition and 2.2 times in the clamped condition. It is also shown that the maximum load-carrying capacity of ship plating increase as much as 4.3 times in the simply supported condition and 4.2 times in the clamped condition. This method would be applied and extended to solve combined nonlinear problems which involve both material nonlinearity and geometric nonlinearity.
Recently, offshore wind farms are increasingly expected, because there are huge resource and large site in offshore. Jeju island has optimum condition for constructing a wind energy farm. Unlike the mainland, Jeju island has stratified structure distribution between rock layers sediments due to volcanic activation. In these case, it can be occur engineering problems in whole structures as well as the safety of foundation as the thickness and distribution of sediment under top rock layer can not support sufficiently the structure. In this study, field lateral load test of the pile for analyzing lateral behavior of the offshore wind turbine which is embedded in basalt. After calculating the subgrade resistance and the horizontal deflection from the measured strain to derive p-y curve from the lateral load test results, the subgrade resistance amplifies the error in the process of differentiation and the error of piecewise polynomial curve fitting is the smallest. In order to calculate the horizontal deflection from the measured strain, the six-order polynomial was used.
The paper investigates beam lateral buckling stability according to linear and non-linear models. Closed form solutions for single-symmetric cross sections are first derived according to a non-linear model considering flexural-torsional coupling and pre-buckling deformation effects. The closed form solutions are compared to a beam finite element developed in large torsion. Effects of pre-buckling deflection and gradient moment on beam stability are not well known in the literature. The strength of singly symmetric I-beams under gradient moments is particularly investigated. Beams with T and I cross-sections are considered in the study. It is concluded that pre-buckling deflections effects are important for I-section with large flanges and analytical solutions are possible. For beams with T-sections, lateral buckling resistance depends not only on pre-buckling deflection but also on cross section shape, load distribution and buckling modes. Effects of pre-buckling deflections are important only when the largest flange is under compressive stresses and positive gradient moments. For negative gradient moments, all available solutions fail and overestimate the beam strength. Numerical solutions are more powerful. Other load cases are investigated as the stability of continuous beams. Under arbitrary loads, all available solutions fail, and recourse to finite element simulation is more efficient.

In order to investigate the effect of the height of application point of lateral loads and reinforcing steel bars in walls and columns in improving the seismic behavior of confined concrete block masonry walls, an experimental research program is conducted. A total of twelve one-half scale specimens are tested under repeated lateral loads. Specimens are tested to failure with increasing maximum lateral drifts while a vertical axial load was applied and maintained constant. The specimens adopted are two-dimensional (2D) hollow concrete block masonry walls with different parameters such as shear span ratio, inflection point and percent of reinforcement in confining columns and walls. Test results obtained for each specimen include cracking patterns, load-deflection curve, and strains in reinforcement and walls in critical locations. Analysis of test data showed that above parameters generate a considerable effect on the seismic performance of confined concrete block masonry walls.
Based on a non-linear model taking into account flexural-torsional couplings, analytical solutions are derived for lateral buckling of simply supported I beams under some representative load cases. A closed form is established for lateral buckling moments. It accounts for bending distribution, load height application and pre-buckling deflections. Coefficients $C_1$ and $C_2$ affected to these parameters are then derived. Regard to well known linear stability solutions, these coefficients are not constant but depend on another coefficient $k_1$ that represents the pre-buckling deflection effects. In numerical simulations, shell elements are used in mesh process. The buckling loads are achieved from solutions of eigenvalue problem and by bifurcations observed on non linear equilibrium paths. It is proved that both the buckling loads derived from linear stability and eigenvalue problem lead to poor results, especially for I sections with large flanges for which the behaviour is predominated by pre-buckling deflection and the coefficient $k_1$ is large. The proposed solutions are in good agreement with numerical bifurcations observed on non linear equilibrium paths.
This paper shows the results of a series of model bests on the behavior of single steel pipe pile which is subjected to lateral load in Nak-dong river sand. The purpose of the present paper is to estimate the effect of Non -homogeneous soil, constraint condition of pile head, lateral load velocity, relative density of soil, embedded pile length, and flexural stiffness of pile on the behavior of single pile which is embedded in Nak-dong river strand. These effects can be quantined only by the results of model tests. The nonlinear responses of lateral loadieflection relationships are fitted to 2nd polynomial equations by model tests results. Also, the lateral load of a deflection, yield and ultimate lateral load max. bending moment, and yield bending moment can be expressed as exponential function in terms of relative density and deflection ratio. By comparing Brom's results with model results on the lateral ultimate load, it is found that short and long pile show the contrary results with each other. The contrary results are due to the smaller assumed soil reaction than the soil reaction of the Nakiong river sand at deep point. By comparing lateral behavior on the homogeneous soil with non-homogeneous soil, it is shown that lateral loadieflection relationship is very dependent on the upper relative density. This phenomenon is shown remarkably as the difference between upper and lower relative density increases.
