  • A computational study on the supersonic flow around the lateral jet controlled missile has been performed. For this purpose a three dimensional Navier-Stokes computer code(AADL3D) has been developed and case studies have been performed by comparing the normal force coefficient and the moment coefficient of a missile body for different jet flow conditions including jet pressure and jet Mach number. The results show different behavior of normal force and moment variation according to jet pressure variation and jet Mach number variation. From the detailed flow field analyses, it is verified that most of the normal force loss and the pitching moment generation are taken place at the low-pressure region behind the jet nozzle. Furthermore, it is shown that the pitching moment can be efficiently reduced by obtaining the lateral thrust through higher jet Mach number rather than through high jet pressure.

  • Recently, lateral jet has been adopted as an effective control device for high maneuverable tactical missiles in supersonic regime. Aerodynamic interference caused by the lateral jet can be categorized into two phenomena : local interaction redistributing surface pressure near the jet exit region and downstream interaction affecting tail control effectiveness. As part of on-going research, this paper deals with the aerodynamic modeling to predict the variation of force and moment when lateral jet of is activated on the missile body. For this purpose, a series of numerical simulation has been performed and the results are presented. Using the information obtained by CFD, aerodynamic model of preliminary level has been constructed and is reviewed. Some relevant comparison with wind tunnel tests are presented.

  • A computational study on the supersonic flow around the lateral jet controlled missile has been performed. Case studies have been performed by comparing the normal force coefficient and the moment coefficient of a missile body for several different jet flow conditions, angle of attacks, circumferential jet locations, and spouting jet angles. For the several different jet flow conditions, which include the jet pressure, the jet Mach number, and the corresponding jet mass flow rate, the results show that the normal force coefficient is almost proportional to the jet thrust but the moment coefficient is not. Distinctly different flow phenomena can be noticed as the pressure ratio and the jet Mach number increase. By investigating the angle of attack effect to the normal force and the pitching moment, it has been identified that the normal force and the pitching moment show nonlinearity with respect to the angle of attack. From the detailed flow field analyses with respect to the jet flow conditions and the angle of attacks, it is verified that most of the normal force loss and the pitching moment generation are taken place at the low-pressure region behind the jet nozzle. Furthermore, the normal force and the pitching moment characteristics of the missile have been identified by comparing different circumferential jet locations and spouting jet angles.

  • Lateral thrust jet has better maneuverability performance than the control surface like the conventional fin for attitude control or orbital transition of guided weapons. However, in the supersonic region, a jet interaction flow occurs due to the lateral thrust jet during flight, and a complicated flow structure is exhibited by the interaction of the shock wave, boundary layer flow, and the vortex flow. Especially, hit-to-kill interceptors require precise control and maneuvering, so it is necessary to analyze the effect of jet interaction flow. Conventional jet interaction analyses were performed under low altitude conditions, but there are not many cases in the case of medium altitude condition, which has different flow characteristics. In this study, jet interaction flow analysis is performed on the lateral jet controlled interceptor operating at medium altitude. Based on the results, the structural characteristics of the flow field and the changes of aerodynamic coefficient are analyzed.

  • A computational study of supersonic flow around lateral jet controlled missile has been performed. For this study, three dimensional Navier-Stokes code(AADL3D) has been developed. Spalart-Allmaras one equation turbulence model has been implemented on the AADL3D code for relatively rapid computational time. For the validation of developed code, AADL3D, pressure distributions on an ogive-cylinder body has been compared with experimental data. Also, the shock structure of sonic jet on the flat plate in the supersonic flow field has been compared with experimental flow visualization result to see the analysis capability of freestream-jet interaction case. A case study has been performed through comparing the normal force coefficient and the moment coefficient of missile body for several jet flow conditions. Current results will be used to the optimum design of a lateral jet controlled missile.

  • A computational study on the supersonic flow around the lateral jet controlled missile has been performed. For this purpose a three dimensional Navier-Stokes computer code(AADL3D) has been developed and case studies have been performed by comparing the normal force coefficient and the moment coefficient of a missile body for several parameters such as angles of attack, circumferential jet positions, and spouting jet angles. Missile surface is divided into four regions with respect to the center of gravity, and the normal force and moment distribution at each region are compared. The results show different behavior of the normal force and moment variation according to each parameter. Furthermore, it is shown that the pitching moment can be minimized through proper combination of each parameter.

  • In the present work, a parametric study on double-jet film-cooling has been carried out to enhance the film-cooling effectiveness using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis. The shear stress transport turbulence model is used as the turbulence closure. The lateral ejection angles and the lateral and streamwise distance between the centers of the cooling holes are chosen as the geometric parameters. The spatially averaged film-cooling effectiveness averaged over an area of 8 hole diameters in width and 30 hole diameters in streamwise length is used to evaluate the performance of film-cooling. The parameter of the lateral distance has the largest impact on the film cooling effectiveness compared to the others. On the other hand, the parameter of streamwise distance gives the least influence on the film cooling effectiveness.

  • An experimental and computational study has been performed for investigation of the jet interaction in supersonic flow with a ramp located behind a sonic, lateral jet. The experimental techniques include schlieren, pressure taps, and Pressure Sensitive Paint. The numerical solver used in this study is AeroSoft's structured flow solver GASP Version 4.0. A Mach 4 crossflow with a pressure ratio of 532, and the 3D ramp was designed by parametric study using GASP. The results showed that the ramp located downstream of the jet decrese the nose-down pitching moment by 70% without a force loss.
