Pile-to-pilecap connection performance is important as Integral abutment bridges (IABs) have no expansion joints and their flexible weak-axis oriented supporting piles take the role of the expansion joint. This connection may govern the bridge strength and the performance against various lateral loads. The intention of this study is to identify crack propagation patterns when the pile-to-pilecap connection is subjected to lateral loadings and to propose novel connections for improved performance under lateral loadings. In this study, eight different types of connections were developed and modeled, using Abaqus 6.12 to evaluate performances. Three types were developed by strengthening the connections using rebar or steel tube: (i) PennDOT specification; (ii) Spiral rebar; and (iii) HSS tube. Other types were developed by softening the connections using shape modifications: (i) cylindrical hole; (ii) reduced flange; (iii) removed flange; (iv) extended hole; and (v) slot hole connection types. The connections using the PennDOT specification, HSS tube, and cylindrical hole were shown to be ineffective in the prevention of cracks, resulting in lower structural capacities under the lateral load compared to other types. The other developed connections successfully delayed or arrested the concrete crack initiations and propagations. Among the successful connection types, the spiral rebar connection allowed a relatively larger reaction force, which can damage the superstructure of the IABs. Other softened connections performed better in terms of minimized reaction forces and crack prevention.
When soft soils are effected by unsymmetrical surcharge due to embankement and abutements of a bridge, large plastic sheraring deformations such as settlements, lateral displacements, upheavals and sliding shearing failure in the soils occurred and they have often damaged considerabily to the soils and structure. This study examines the existing theoretical background for the behavior of the displacement of soils by unsymmetrical surcharge on the soft soils and compares the analytical results to the actual measurements performed through the model test. The procedures of model test are that a model stock device is made and soft soils are filled in a container which fixes the soils. Then the displacements observed when surcharge load increa ses by regular interval at undrainage condition. It analyzes the relation of soil characteristics to displacement, critical surcharge and ultimate bearing capadty, condition of plastic flow and lateral flow pressure, comparing them with the existing theories. Understanding the causes of lateral displacement in soft soils due to unsymmetrical surchages will prevent a damage in advance.

Recently, the deep excavations have been peformed to utilize the under ground space. As the ground excavation is deeper, the damage of the adjacent structure and the ground occurs frequently. The analysis of the retaining structures is necessary to the safety of the excavation works. There are many methods such as elasto-plastic, FEM, and FDM to analyze the displacement of the retaining structure. The elasto-plastic method is generally used in practice. In this thesis, GEBA-1 program by the Nakamura-Nakajawa elasto-plastic method was developed. The program for Windows was used the Visual Basic 6.0, and the Main of the program consists of three subroutines, SUB1, SUB2, and SUB3. The lateral displacement of the wall was analyzed by the developed program GEBA-1, SUNEX, and EXCAD, and compared with the measured displacement by the Inclinometer(at three excavation work sites). The excavation method of each site is braced retaining wall using H-pile. Each excavation depth is 14m, 14m, or 8.2m. The results of the analyses are the followings ① In the multi-layer soil, the lateral displacement by the GEBA-1 and EXCAD which is considering the distribution of the strut load is equal to the measured displacement. Elasto-plasto programs can't consider the change of the ground water in clay. Therefore, the analysis displacement was expected only 20% of the measured wall displacement. ③ At the final excavation step, the maximum lateral displacement of analysis and field occurred 7∼18m at the 85∼92% of the excavation depth. ④ The maximum lateral displacement in clay, as 50mm, occurred on the ground surface.
Purpose: One of the main contributors to proximal fifth metatarsal fracture is ankle inversion and the incidence of recurrence may increase in patients with ankle instability. So, the authors confirmed the patients of proximal fifth metatarsal fracture with ankle instability by checking the history and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and assessed the value of MRI as therapeutic prognosis and clinical indicators for prevention of recurrence. Materials and Methods: Patients with proximal fifth metatarsal fractures visited our hospital during recent five years were reviewed. 35 patients with suspected damage by ankle inversion had been identified a history of ankle instability and checked the hindfoot malalignment through hindfoot alignment view and MRI was performed prospectively. The patients was devided to three groups on the location of fracture site and the groups were compared each other. Results: The mean time from injury to checking MRI was 10.7 days. There was no structural abnormality and was no significant difference according to the location of fracture. The patients with history of ankle inversion were 31(88.6%) and the patients with history of chronic or recurrent injury were 22 patients (62.9%). The lesion of MRI related to lateral ankle instability were identified in all patients. Conclusion: This study noted a high incidence of lateral ankle instability that was identified by MRI in the patients of proximal fifth metatarsal fracture. Aggressive treatment for lateral ankle instability should be needed for complications as proximal fifth metatarsal fracture to reduce the recurrence and occurrence.
Pile foundation for transmission tower constructed in weak ground can cause the damage of the tower due to the different settlement between the foundations. In Japan and USA, connected-pile foundations whose 4 foundations are connected each other by beams were used for transmission tower (TEPCO 1988, IEEE 2001). Resistance increasing factors for connected-pile foundation signify increasing amount of resistance due to the effect of connected-pile material. In this study, we performed model lateral load tests of connected-pile foundations for transmission tower and found the resistance increasing factors for connected-pile foundation. The tests were performed in silty clay, and the resistance increasing factors were founded in various conditions that lateral load directions and height, the stiffness of beams in the connected-pile foundations were changed. The resistance increasing factors from our research were presented as a function of normal lateral loading height and normal stiffness of the connected-pile material. The resistances which were estimated from the resistance increasing factors were similar to measured values.
Purpose: This study aimed at examining the thickness of lateral cortical bone in the mandibular posterior body and the location of the inferior alveolar nerve canal as well as investigating the clinically viable bone grafting site(s) and proper thickness of the bone grafts. Subjects and Methods: The study enrolled a total of 49 patients who visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital to have their lower third molar extracted and received cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examinations. Their CBCT data were used for the study. The thickness of lateral cortical bone and the location of inferior alveolar nerve canal were each measured from the buccal midpoint of the patients' lower first molar to the mandibular ramus area in the occlusal plane of the molar area. Results: Except in the external oblique ridge and alveolar ridge, all measured areas exhibited the greatest cortical bone thickness near the lower second molar area and the smallest cortical bone thickness in the retromolar area. The inferior alveolar nerve canal was found to be located in the innermost site near the lower second molar area compared to other areas. In addition, the greatest thickness of the trabecular bone was found between the inferior alveolar nerve canal and the lateral cortical bone. Conclusions: In actual clinical settings involving bone harvesting in the posterior mandibular body, clinicians are advised to avoid locating the osteotomy line in the retromolar area to help protect the inferior alveolar nerve canal from damage. Harvesting the bone near the lower second molar area is judged to be the proper way of securing cortical bone with the greatest thickness.
Most transportation departments have recognized and developed procedures to address the ever-increasing weights of trucks traveling on bridges in a service today. Transportation agencies also recognize the issues with overheight vehicles' collisions with bridges, but few stakeholders have definitive countermeasures. Bridges are becoming more vulnerable to collisions from overheight vehicles. The exact response under lateral impact force is difficult to predict. In this paper, nonlinear impact analysis shows that the degree of deformation recorded through the modeling of the unprotected vehicle-girder model provides realistic results compared to the observation from the US-61 bridge overheight vehicle impact. The predicted displacements are 0.229 m, 0.161 m, and 0.271 m in the girder bottom flange (lateral), bottom flange (vertical), and web (lateral) deformations, respectively, due to a truck traveling at 112.65 km/h. With such large deformations, the integrity of an impacted bridge becomes jeopardized, which in most cases requires closing the bridge for safety reasons and a need for rehabilitation. We proposed different sacrificial cushion systems to dissipate the energy of an overheight vehicle impact. The goal was to design and tune a suitable energy absorbing system that can protect the bridge and possibly reduce stresses in the overheight vehicle, minimizing the consequences of an impact. A material representing a Sorbothane high impact rubber was chosen and modeled in ANSYS. Out of three sacrificial schemes, a sandwich system is the best in protecting both the bridge and the overheight vehicle. The mitigation system reduced the lateral deflection in the bottom flange by 89%. The system decreased the stresses in the bridge girder and the top portion of the vehicle by 82% and 25%, respectively. The results reveal the capability of the proposed sacrificial system as an effective mitigation system.
The damage caused by lateral movement occurs frequently on site where abutment or retaining wall was built on soft ground along with embankment behind and the study on stability of abutment against lateral movement has been mostly focused on soft ground. However lateral movement occurs not only on soft ground but also on embankment slope which causes the impact on structure. The bridges built in Korea are mostly on mountainous area than soft ground. This study is intended to analyze the ground behavior resulting from lateral movement using finite element analysis method to the section as well as propose the basic data for abutment design on embankment slope through the analysis of the outcome of reinforcement method. As a result, when it comes to the reinforcement with soil surcharge and stabilized pile in slope, lateral movement was reduced by 4~30% and displacement on bearing shoe on abutment was reduced by 2~13%. On the contrary, when reinforced with EPS, lateral float was reduced by 97% and maximum horizontal displacement of bearing shoe on abutment was reduced by 95%. Thus, it's necessary to identify the design technique which is applicable to domestic condition through additional tests and more reliable study using numerical analysis and comparing the measured values shall follow.
Protection mechanisms for skin damage of ultraviolet (UV) absorbers in personal care products for protection against UV are well studied, but not for hair protection. The purpose of this study is to describe and compare the changes of physical property produced in human hair by doses of the UV-B exposure causing protein degradation. To observe the change of physical properties in hair, the experimental intensity of UV-B exposure has been established on the basis of statistical data from official meterological administration as daily one hour sunlight exposure for two weeks. Polysilicone-15, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (OMC), and octocrylene were employed for UV-B absorber, and those were treated to hair swatch by rubbing wash through shampoo and conditioner. Bending rigidity displayed kinetically successive reduction at high doses of UV exposure up to the 8,000 s, and exhibited different level at each sample of UV-B absorber. However, the values of Bossa Nova Technologies (BNT) for shinning factor were already saturable at the 2,000 s exposure except that treated with polysilicone-15. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to measure a strength of inner protein produces a successive reduction of enthalpy as like a reduction of bending rigidity upon UV exposure. Surface roughness from lateral force microscope (LFM) acquired immediately after UV exposure show a saturable frictional voltage which has been also found in a saturable BNT data as the time of UV exposure increases. Through researching the DSC and the LFM, shinning of hair was much correlated to the protein damage at the surface, and bending rigidity could be regulated by the protein structural damage inside hair. Therefore, the optimization of efficient strategy for simultaneous prevention of hair protein on the surface and internal hair was required to maintain physical properties against UV.
The majority of Turkey's geography is at risk of earthquakes. Within the borders of Turkey, including the two major active faults contain the North-Eastern and Eastern Anatolia, earthquake, threatening the safety of life and property. On January 24, 2020, an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 occurred at 8:55 p.m. local time. According to the data obtained from the stations in the region, peak ground acceleration in the east-west direction was measured as 0.292 g from the 2308 coded station in Sivrice. It is thought that the earthquake with a magnitude of Mw 6.8 was developed on the Sivrice-Puturge segment of the Eastern Anatolian Fault, which is a left lateral strike slip fault, and the tear developed in an area of 50-55 km. Aftershocks ranging from 0.8 to 5.1 Mw occurred following the main shock on the Eastern Anatolian Fault. The earthquake caused severe structural damages in Elazığ and neighboring provinces. As a result of the field investigations carried out in this study, significant damage levels were observed in the buildings since it did not meet the criteria in the earthquake codes. Within the study's scope, the structural damage cases in reinforced concrete and masonry structures were investigated. Many structural deficiencies and mistakes such as non-ductile details, poor concrete quality, short columns, strong beams-weak columns mechanism, large and heavy overhangs, masonry building damages and inadequate reinforcement arrangements were observed. Requirements of seismic codes are discussed and compared with observed earthquake damage.
