The performance of a latent heat storage system using a thermosyphon as the heat transfer device between the heat source and the phase change material was investigated experimentally. In order to increase the effective conductivity of the phase change material, layers of copper wire mesh were immersed in the paraffin wax(Sunoco P-116) in such a way that they also may be considered as fins of the thermosyphon. The important results are as follows : (1) The void space of the wire mesh allowed the convection to occur, thus enhanced the performance of the system : (2) The increase of the number of layer of wire mesh increased the conduction heat transfer. However, it also had adverse effect of subduing convective motion of liquid wax : and (3) Overall heat transfer coefficient and thermosyphon conductance increased with the increase of the number of layer of wire mesh, whereas the heat transfer coefficient between the thermosyphon and the wax decreased.
Three-dimensional numerical simulation using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was carried out in order to investigate the formation and dispersion of the plume discharged from the stack of a thermal power station. The simulation was based on the standard ${\kappa}{\sim}{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and a finite-volume method. Warm and moist exhaust from a power plant stack forms a visible plume as entering the cold ambient air. In the simulation, moisture content, emission velocity and temperature of the flue gas, air temperature and wind speed were dealt with the main parameters to analyze the properties of the plume composed mainly of water vapor. As a result of the simulation, the plume could be more apparent in cold winter due to a big difference of latent heat capacity. At no wind condition, the white plume rises 120 m upward from the top of the stack, and expands to 40 m around from the stack in cold winter after flue gas heat recovery. The influencing distance of relative humidity will be about 100 m to 400 m downstream from the stack with a cross wind effect. The decrease of flue gas temperature by heat recovery of thermal energy facilitates the formation of the plume and restrains its dispersion. Wind speed with vertical distribution affects the plume dispersion as well as the density.

Buildings are mostly under part load conditions causing an inefficient system operation in terms of energy consumption. It is critical to operate building air-conditioning system with a scientific or optimal manner which minimizes energy consumption and maintains thermal comfort by matching building sensible and latent loads. Little research has been performed in developing general methodologies for the optimal operation of air-conditioning system. Based on this research motivation, system simulation program was developed by adopting various equipment operating strategies which are energy efficient especially for humidity control in summer. A numerical optimization technique was utilized to search optimal solution for multi-independent variables and then linked to the developed system simulation model within a mam program. The main goal of the study is to provide a systematic framework and guideline for the optimal operation of air-conditioning system focusing on air-side. For given cooling loads and ambient outdoor conditions the optimal operating strategies of a commercial building are determined by minimizing a constrained objective function by a nonlinear programming technique. Desired space setpoint conditions were found through evaluating the trade-offs between comfort and system power consumption. The results show that supply airflow rate and compressor fraction play main roles in the optimization process. It was found that variable setpoint optimization technique could produce lower indoor humidity level demanding less power consumption which will be benefits for building applications of humidity problem.
This paper reports an experimental study on the performance evaluation of air-to-air heat exchanger with rotary type newly developed in this study. Air flow rate is varied from 10 to 120 m3/h. The range of RPM of the porous rotating discs mounted inside the heat exchanger unit is 0 to 50. The temperature of the return air side is set by adjusting heat supply at heater. The material of the porous rotating discs is cooper and its thickness is 1.0 mm. The heat transfer rate increased with the increase in air flow rate. It was found that the heat transfer rate, as the temperature of the return air side was increased, was improved due to higher temperature difference. The heat exchange performance increased with the increase in the temperature of the return air side at the conditions of the same RPM. The sensible heat exchange efficiency was maximum 68 to 76 percent, and enthalpy exchange efficiency 64 to 74 percent.
The experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the performance of air-to-air heat exchanger with rotating porous plates newly developed in this study. The rotating porous plates are mounted with an equal interval of 18 mm inside the heat exchanger where the hot and cold airs enter at opposite ends. When flowing in opposite directions by the separating plate installed in the center of the rotating porous plates, the airs give and receive the heat each other. The material of the porous plate is cooper and its thickness is 1.0 mm. Air flow rate is varied from 10 to 120 m3/h. From the experiment of air-to-air heat exchanger with the rotating porous plates, the heat exchange performance increased with the increase in RPM of the porous rotating discs at the conditions of the same air flow rate. The sensible heat exchange efficiency was maximum 60 to 70 percent, and enthalpy exchange efficiency 50 to 60 percent.
NOx emission has been controlled because it is a major cause of the acid rain and effects considerably on formation and destruction of ozone. A SCR system on diesel engine is necessary to clear TierIII, because IMO(International Maritime Organization) plans on tightening regulations to TierIII at $1^{st}$ January 2016. In this study, flow analysis was accomplished with ANSYS Fluent program so that the SCR system would be retrofitted in training ship KAYA and the temperature distributions of exhaust gas in SCR sytem were investigated after it was installed. As a result, it was confirmed that pressure and velocity distributions in SCR system were depended on pipe line shapes, then it was designed as the pressure was lower. The temperature differential between 1 and 3 point was $15^{\circ}C$ because of evaporative latent heat of urea and the temperature of 4 point after catalyst was increased by $5^{\circ}C$ than 3 point because of exothermic reaction.
The lasing characteristics of a Nd:phosphate glass laser pumped by 514 nm of an $Ar^{+}$ laser has been investigated. The oscillator consists of a Nd:glass gain medium set at Brewster angle, and two concave mirrors, and a flat mirror with a reflectance of 98%. The $Ar^{+}$ laser pumping beam is focused longitudinally at the beam waist of laser mode for efficient pumping. The pumping beam is chopped at 100 Hz to reduce the heat loading to prevent the thermal damage of the gain medium by the latent heat from the absorbed pumping beam. The maximum laser output power of 70 mW at 1.5 W pumping and the threshold input power of 520 mW have been obtained.

Last several stages of high capacity fossil power steam turbine and most stages of nuclear power steam turbine operate on wet steam. As a consequence, the flows in those cascades are accompanied by condensation, and the latent heat caused by condensation affects an oblique shock wave being generated at the vicinity of trailing of the blade. In the case of expanding of moist air through a suction type indraft wind tunnel, the effect of condensation affection the oblique shock wave generated by placing the small wedge into the supersonic part of the nozzle was investigated experimentally. In these connections, the relationship between condensation zone and reflection point of the incident oblique shock wave, angle between wedge bottom wall and oblique shock wave, and the variations of angles of incident and reflected shock waves due to the variation of initial stagnation relative humidity are discussed. Furthermore, the relationship between initial stagnation relative humidity and load working on the nozzle wall, obtained by measuring static pressure at the nozzle centerline, is discussed.

The process of separating oxygen and nitrogen from the air is mainly performed by electric liquefaction, which consumes a lot of electricity, resulting in higher operating costs. On the other hand, when used for cold energy of LNG, electric power can be reduced compared to the electric Linde cycle. Currently, LNG cold energy is used in the cold refrigeration warehouse, separation of air-liquefaction, and LNG cold energy generation in Japan. In this study, the system using LNG cold energy and the Linde cycle process system were simulated by PRO/II simulators, respectively, to cool the elevated air temperature from the compressor to about $-183^{\circ}C$ in the air liquefaction separation process. The required amount of electricity was compared with the latent heat utilization fraction of LNG, the LNG supply pressure, and the LNG cold energy usage. At the air flow rate of $17,600m^3/h$, the power source unit of the Linde cycle system was $0.77kWh/m^3$, compared with $0.3kWh/m^3$.
Several countries show interest in the Generation-IV power reactor innovative small module (PRISM), including: Canada, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. Generation IV International Forum (GIF) has recommended the utilizing of probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) in evaluating the safety of Generation-IV reactors. This paper reviews the PSA performed for PRISM using SAPHIRE 7.27 code. This work shows that the core damage frequency (CDF) of PRISM for a single module is estimated by 8.5E-8/year which is lower than the Generation-IV target that is 1E-6 core damage per year. The social risk of PRISM (likelihood of latent cancer fatality) with evacuation is estimated by 9.0E-12/year which is much lower than the basic safety objective (BSO) that is 1E-7/year. The social risk without evacuation is estimated by 1.2E- 11/year which is also much lower than the BSO. For the individual risk (likelihood of prompt fatality), it is concluded that it can be considered negligible with evacuation (1.0E-13/year). Assuming no evacuation, the individual risk is 2.7E-10/year which is again much lower than the BSO. In comparison with other PSAs performed for similar sodium fast reactors (SFRs), it shows that PRISM concept has the lowest CDF.
