Laser is getting more attention from increasing numbers of dental clinicians by its own several unique characteristics : precision, hemostasis, and bactericidal capacity. It also provides patients with several advantages of minimal tissue damage. faster healing with less postoperative pain and minimal use of local anesthetics. Labial or lingual frenectomies were performed successfully in three pediatric patients using Nd-YAG laser. When compared to the conventional scalpel method, less local anesthetics were needed and the bleeding control was so excellent that any suture was not necessary. The operation sites were completely healed without any infection or complication and discomfort from swelling or pain was not noted in all cases throughout the healing process.
An experimental investigation of the physical properties of light curing composite resin P-50 was performed, in which an argon ion laser beam was irradiated. The physical and mechanical properties of laser polymerized composite resin were determined by measuring the compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, curing depth and microhardness depending upon the experimental conditions such as the laser irradiation time(10sec, 20sec, 30sec) and laser power(300mW, 500mW, 1000mW). These observations were compared with a conventional visible light curing technique. In addition, to evaluate the marginal adaptation, Class V cavity was prepared on the buccal or lingual surface of the extracted premolar and filled with P-50 light curing resin. The test samples were irradiated with both light sources so that the interface between the restoration and the tooth structure were observed under scanning electron microscope. The most of physical and mechanical properties of the laser cured resin showed a remarkable improvement than those treated with the conventional light source, while the observations with the scanning electron microscope provided no significant difference for two polymerized sources. From the results in the experiment it appears that the potential of an argon ion laser is of important value of the use in the polymerization of composite resin.

In this study, attempt has been made to evaluate the effect of $CO_2$ laser irradiation on enamel surface structure and the bond strength of sealant material. Conventional acid etching was used as a control technic for comparison. The results obtained from this experiment were as follows; 1. The highest mean shear bond strength value was observed in samples of Group I (acid-etching) with the statistical significance(p<.05) between all the other groups. 2. The shear bond strength in Group IV was the lowest among laser etching groups. but there were no significant difference between them(p>.05). 3. Scanning electron microscopic observation showed that the rough and irregular surface was created by $CO_2$ laser treatment with the formation of numerous pores, micro-cracks, and small bubble-like inclusion. Increasing the energy density induced localized surface melt with a thin smooth glaze-like appearance. 4. In acid-etched control specimen cohesive failure predominated, whereas adhesive failure was the main mode in laser-treated group. Based upon the above-mentioned results, it can be assumed that the $CO_2$ laser is not an adequate substitute for the acid-etch technique in enamel preconditioning. More studies are required to explore the effective condition of laser irradiation which could attain the better bond strength of restorative materials.

In children, they were presented pain and discomfort after surgical procedure. Some study has been suggested that Soft Laser promote healing process. So, the aim of the present study was to examine the effect of low power generating semiconductor laser on healing process after surgical procedure. DENS-BIO Laser applied to the wounds created by mesiodens extraction and lingual frenectomy. DENS-BIO Laser was irradiated on the wound with pulse 8(1000Hz) and 2mW, for 4 minutes. And then, healing process of surgical site was observed. The results from the present study can be summarized as follows : 1. In the irradiated wound, the healing process is more faster than not irradiation group. 2. Pain is less than not irradiation group.

Background/Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Nd:YAG irradiation on adherence of retrograde filling materials (mineral trioxide aggregate [MTA] and Super-EBA) by micro-computed tomography (CT) measurement and to observe the dentinal surface after irradiation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Materials and methods: Forty retrofilling models using extracted human teeth were divided into four groups according to the material and method used: ProRoot MTA (MTA group), Super-EBA (EBA group), MTA with Nd:YAG laser irradiation (LMTA group), and Super-EBA with Nd:YAG laser irradiation (LEBA group). All specimens were stored in 100% humidity for 24 hours until micro-CT was performed. The gap volume of the tooth/material interface was measured using the CTAn program. In six samples, the laser-irradiated dentin surface was observed using SEM. Results: The mean percent difference in gap volume was not statistically significant between the Nd:YAG laser-irradiated groups and non-irradiated in both materials(P > 0.05). The gap volume in the MTA group was significantly lower than that in the EBA group (P < 0.05). Examination of the non-irradiated specimens by SEM showed patent dentinal tubules. In contrast, alterations in the texture of the dentin surface and obliteration of the dentinal tubules were evident in the Nd:YAG laser-irradiated specimens. Conclusion: In this study, changes in the dentinal surface after Nd:YAG irradiation did not affect adherence between the apical filling material and the dentin wall.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare two different gingival depigmentation techniques using an erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser and rotary instruments. Methods: Two patients with melanin pigmentation of gingiva were treated with different gingival depigmentation techniques. Ablation of the gingiva by Er:YAG laser was performed on the right side, and abrasion with a rotary round bur on the opposite side. Results: The patients were satisfied with the esthetically significant improvement with each method. However, some pigment still remained on the marginal gingival and papilla. The visual analog scale did not yield much difference between the two methods, with slightly more pain on the Er:YAG laser treated site. Conclusions: The results of these cases suggest that ablation of the gingiva by an Er:YAG laser and abrasion with a rotary round bur is good enough to achieve esthetic satisfaction and fair wound healing without infection or severe pain. Prudent care about the gingival condition, such as the gingival thickness and degree of pigmentation along with appropriate assessment is needed in ablation by the Er:YAG laser procedure.
The responses of human pulp fibroblastic cells to Ga-As Semi-Conductor-Dens-Bio Laser (Frequency: 5 Hz~10,000 Hz Model: SD-101A RCA, U.SA)) were examined in vitro using pulp fibroblastic cells obtained from the pulp tissue of human tooth. The mitogenic effect of soft laser was assessed by measuring the MTT assay. The morphologic effect for soft laser showed under the scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results as follows; 1. The mitogenic response of the soft laser was not observed until 4th time of radiation, while the mitogenic response at 4th time increased mitogenic effect by as much as 1.7 fold compared to the control value. 2. The mitogenic response of the soft laser on pulp fibroblast differ from the mitogenic response on other fibroblasts. 3. In scanning electron microscopic study, The microvilli of cell surface increased gradually with width and length after laser radiation, it demonstrate that development of microvilli have close connection with differentiation of cells. 4. Under the transmission electron microscope, The laser-treated cells maintained their elongated shape and a high degree of cellular polarization. The large cell body containing a well developed Golgi complex, a large number of profiles of rough endoplasmic reticulum, and great numbers of mitochondria. 5. The laser-treated cells maintained the long straight bundles of closely apposed microfilaments or individual filaments forming a cross-linked network. These findings suggest that the laser may have important roles in promotion of pulp healing and consequently may be useful for clinical application in pulp regenerative procedures.
The purpose of this study is to obtain the data of prestep in cavity preparation by observing changed conditions of laser irradiated dental hard tissues. The forty five extracted caries free human molars were divided into three groups and each group into five subgroups. A $CO_2$ laser irradiation was performed each subgroup of group I for one second with output power of 5 W, 10 Wand 20 W. On group II, laser irradiation was done ten times for 0.1 second duration using same power ratings as group I. On group III, laser irradiation was done 0.1 second, 0.2 second and 0.4 second with output power of 50 W. We investigated mineral contents and crater wall of obtained specimens, i.e., laser irradiated teeth, using computer controlled electron probe microanalyzer and scanning electron microscope. The following results were obtained: 1. Both calcium and phosphorus contents in laser irradiated enamel crater wall were increased, and magnesium content was decreased, but these trends were not statistically significant. 2. In laser irradiated dentin, change of mineral content was more significant. 3. In laser irradiated enamel and dentin, there were no significant differences on mineral content change due to irradiation condition and energy density. 4. In scanning electron microscopic study, enamel rods of the crater wall were fused and clefts were observed in parallel with the direction of enamel rod for all groups. 5. In laser irradiated dentin, irregular fusion and clefts were observed. In irradiated teeth with high power and short duration, the locally formed narrow crater wall was observed.

Various diagnostic methods, such as electric pulp test, cold test, test cavity etc., have been used to determine the pulp vitality. At least two or more methods should be used with supplemental information to diagnose each case because using one method doesn't provide sufficient accuracy. These conventional methods have depended on nervous responses, but Laser Doppler Flowmeter determines the pulp vitality by measuring pulpal blood flow. In this case, we tested the vitality of the traumatized teeth with incomplete root apices and autotransplanted teeth with conventional methods and Laser Doppler Flowmeter. Conventional methods, such as electric pulp test and cold test can produce various responses according to the development state of the pulpal nerve and the sensory threshold of the patient. But, Laser Doppler Flowmeter has a lower false response rate than any other pulp vitality test methods and it can determine the vitality somewhat earlier than the other method.
