  • Linear motors can drive a linear motion without intermediate gears, screws or crank shafts. Linear motors can successfully replace ball lead screw in machine tools because they have a high velocity, acceleration and good positioning accuracy. On the other hand, linear motors emit large amounts of heat and have low efficiency. In this paper, the thermal behavior of a synchronous linear motor with high velocity and force is analyzed. To improve the thermal characteristics of the linear motor, structure of linear motor and cooler is changed. Some effects of an integrated cooler, an U-cooler and a thermal symmetrical cooler are presented.

  • The washing machine needs high torque for large load variation, Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) is proper to adapt the washing machine system. However, IPMSM can operate the lower output power than the other permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) when the motor control by the conventional control. This paper suggests adaptive motor control for IPMSM and experiments the washing machine system.

  • SFC(Static Frequence Converter)system has come to be used as start-up drive system for large synchronous machine in many industry applications. Many papers have been presented the control algorithm for pumped storage power generation using SFC system but they did not included about the detailed start-up algorithm of gas turbine using SFC system. This paper presents the important field weakening control algorithm of a large synchronous machine using SFC system and the results of experiment show that the proposed algorithm is proper and effective about this.

  • A 1 MW class HTS (High-Temperature Superconducting) synchronous motor has been developed. This motor is aimed to be utilized for industrial application such as large motors operating in large plants. The HTS field coil of the developed motor is cooled by way of neon thermo siphonmechanism and the stator (armature) coil is cooled by water through hollow copper conductor. This paper also describes evaluation of some electrical parameters from performance test results of our motor, which was conducted at steady state in generator mode and motor mode. Open and short circuit tests were conducted in generator mode while a 1.1 MW rated induction machine was rotating the HTS machine. Electrical parameters such as mutual inductance and synchronous inductance are deduced from these tests. Load test was done upto rating torque during motor mode and efficiency was measured at each load torque.

  • Generally large synchronous rotating machines with 2 poles have more merits than the others with more than 2 poles Superconducting synchronous rotating machines also have the same tendency, but they have different structure from conventional ones because of no magnetic core inside of the rotor. As the result, design approaches of the superconducting field coils are also different, which would be classified into 2 types according to their coil shapes. The first one is race-track type and the other is saddle type Race-track type machines have almost the same structure with conventional salient pole generators which are being used as largely small scale machines with more than 2 poles. On the other hand saddle type machines correspond to conventional cylindrical generators with 2 poles used for large turbine system in power plants. In this paper several types of superconducting field coils are introduced for 2 pole superconducting machine design and then the feasibility of each type is considered. Moreover, based on the consideration. 1MVA superconducting generator(S.G.) with saddle type field coil is designed electromagnetically.

  • HTS motors and generators have some advantages over LTS machines because of higher operating temperature. Very low temperature nakes LTS machines need higher refrigeration cost and large facilities. However, HTS machines are expected to be comparable with conventional counterparts at smaller machine ratings than LTS generators in terms of efficiency and size. As the operating temperature increases, the magnetic flux density generated by HTS field coils decreases relatively. For example, 1000hp HTS synchronous motor developed in a few years ago has maximum field density of 1.5T. At this point, magnetic material used in conventional machines is able to pass magnetic flux easily with high permeability. In order to investigate the effect, we arranged magnetic core only inside of magnet vessel of a 100hp target machine. By way of FEM analysis, we concluded that the magnetic core can reduce amount of expensive BSCCO conductor so much.

  • This paper presents a linear motor, which generates large thrust with a low operating rate. In industrial fields there is a need for actuators that work with a low duty cycle but generate large thrusts. An example of such a case is provided by the actuators for ejector mechanisms in electric injection molding machines. The ordinary LSM (linear synchronous motor) is unsuitable for this large-thrust and low-operating-rate usage, because of its large size and high cost. This paper contains experimental results on linear motors that can generate large thrusts for a short time, and which can be cheaply produced. The described linear motor could be contained space of $250mm \times250mm\times 250mm$ and generate a maximum thrust of about 20000 N at a current of 250 A.

  • This paper describes an efficient method of computing any desired number of the most unstable eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a large scale multi-machine power system. Approximate eigenvalues obtained by Hessenberg process are refined using Rayleigh quotient iteration with cubic convergence property. If further eigenvalues and eigenvectors are needed, the procedure described above are repeated with deflation. The proposed algorithm can cover all the model types of synchronous machines, exciters, speed governing system and PSS defined in AESOPS. The proposed algorithm applied to New England test system with 10 machines and 39 buses produced the results same with AESOPS in faster computation time. Also eigenvectors computed in Rayleigh quotient iteration makes it possible to make eigen-analysis for improving unstable modes.

  • In network intrusion detection research, two characteristics are generally considered vital to building efficient intrusion detection systems (IDSs): an optimal feature selection technique and robust classification schemes. However, the emergence of sophisticated network attacks and the advent of big data concepts in intrusion detection domains require two more significant aspects to be addressed: employing an appropriate big data computing framework and utilizing a contemporary dataset to deal with ongoing advancements. As such, we present a comprehensive approach to building an efficient IDS with the aim of strengthening academic anomaly detection research in real-world operational environments. The proposed system has the following four characteristics: (i) it performs optimal feature selection using information gain and branch-and-bound algorithms; (ii) it employs machine learning techniques for classification, namely, Logistic Regression, Naïve Bayes, and Random Forest; (iii) it introduces bulk synchronous parallel processing to handle the computational requirements of large-scale networks; and (iv) it utilizes a real-time contemporary dataset generated by the Information Security Centre of Excellence at the University of Brunswick (ISCX-UNB) to validate its efficacy. Experimental analysis shows the effectiveness of the proposed framework, which is able to achieve high accuracy, low computational cost, and reduced false alarms.
