  • Variable selection algorithms for linear regression models of large data are considered. Many algorithms are proposed focusing on the speed and the robustness of algorithms. Among them variance inflation factor (VIF) regression is fast and accurate due to the use of a streamwise regression approach. But a VIF regression is susceptible to outliers because it estimates a model by a least-square method. A robust criterion using a weighted estimator has been proposed for the robustness of algorithm; in addition, a robust VIF regression has also been proposed for the same purpose. In this article a fast and robust variable selection method is suggested via a VIF regression with detecting and removing potential outliers. A simulation study and an analysis of a dataset are conducted to compare the suggested method with other methods.

  • In this study, turbulent flows in a planar combustor which has a square rib-type flame holder are numerically investigated by Large Eddy Simulation(LES). Firstly, the flow fields with or without jet injection downstream of the flame-holder are examined using uniform inlet velocity. Comparison of the present LES results with experimental one shows a good agreement. Secondly, to investigate mixing of oxidizer(air) and fuel injected behind the flame holder, the scalar-transport equation is introduced and solved. From the instantaneous flow and scalar fields, complex and intense mixing phenomena between fuel and jet are observed. It is shown that the ratio of jet to blocked air velocity is an important factor to determine the flow structure. Especially, when the ratio is large enough, the fuel jet penetrates the main vortices shed from the flame holder, resulting in significant changes in the flow and scalar fields.

  • HectoMAP is a dense redshift survey of red galaxies covering a 53 square degree strip of the northern sky, and Horizon Run 4 is one of the densest and largest cosmological simulations based on the standard Lambda cold dark matter model. We use HectoMAP and Horizon Run 4 to compare the physical properties of observed large-scale structures with simulated ones in the redshift range 0.22

  • It is desirable to use the square grid analysis with the aid of the stereo vision and image processing techniques in order to automatically measure the surface-strain distribution over a stamped part. But this method has some inherent problems such as the difficulty in enhancement of bad images, the measurement error due to the digital image resolution and the limit of the area that can be measured at a time. Therefore, it is still hard to measure the strain distribution over the entire surface of a medium-or large-sized stamped part even by using an automated strain measurement system. In this study, several methods which enable to solve these problems considerably without losing accuracy and precision In measurement are suggested. The superposition of images that have different high-lightened or damaged part from each other gives much enhanced image. A new algorithm for constructing of the element connectivity from the line-thinned image helps recognize up to 1,000 elements. And the geometry assembling algorithm including the global error minimization makes it possible to measure a large specimen with reliability and efficiency.

  • As the thickness of mobile communication devices is getting thinner, the size of the internal parts is also getting smaller. Among them, the battery case requires a high-level deep drawing technique because it has a rectangular shape with a large aspect ratio. In this study, the initial blank shape was optimized to minimize earing in a multi-stage deep drawing process using an artificial neural network(ANN). There has been no reported case of applying artificial neural network technology to the initial blank optimal design for a square case with large aspect ratio. The training data for ANN were obtained though simulation, and the model reliability was verified by performing comparative study with regression model using random sample test and goodness-of-fit test. Finally, the optimal design of the initial blank shape was performed through the verified ANN model.

  • In this study, the correlation of evaluation items and safety rating for 104 of large-scale slopes along the general national road was analyzed. And, we proposed the regression model to predict the safety rating using the multiple regressions analysis. As the result, it is shown that the evaluation items of slope angle, rainfall and groundwater have a low correlation with safety rating. Also, the regression model suggested by multiple regression analysis shows high predictive value, and it would be possible to apply if the evaluation items of excavation condition and groundwater (rainfall) are not clear.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate differences in health behaviors by job stress level in male and female workers in a large-sized company. Methods: Participants were 576 male and 228 female workers who completed questionnaires. Job stress was measured using the 'Short Form Korean Occupational Stress Scale (SF-KOSS)'. Health behaviors included smoking, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, and diet. Frequency, mean, SD, chi-square test, and multivariate logistic regression using SAS version 9.1 were used to analyze data. Results: Smoking, drinking and regular exercise rates were not different by job stress level in male or female workers. Only regular diet was significantly different by job stress level in male and female workers. From multivariate analysis, the alcohol consumption rates for female workers differed by marital status. Regular exercise rate was significantly related to age for male workers and type of employment for female workers. After adjusting for demographic and work-related characteristics, regular diet significantly differed by shift work for male workers and marital status and shift work for female workers. Conclusion: The findings of the study indicate that nursing interventions should be developed to manage job stress to improve diet habits for male and female workers in large-sized companies.

  • Impulse characteristic of transmission tower grounding grid is needed for lightning protection of transmission line. This paper describes an outdoor experimental test facility established for large-scale grounding grid of transmission tower, made up of four impulse current generators and a circle current return electrode. The amplitude of impulse current is up to 100 kA. The results of the CDEGS simulation and GPR measurement reveal the uniform current distribution in the test arrangement. An impulse test for a square electrode with extended conductors is carried out in condition of three current waveforms with different amplitude. Based on the electrical network model and iterative algorithm method, a calculation model is proposed to simulate the impulse characteristic of large-scale grounding grid considering soil ionization. The curve of impulse resistance against the current amplitude shows the soil ionization both from the simulation and test. Deviation between the simulation and test result is less than 15%.

  • In this paper, we present a new reset waveform for a large-sustain-gap structure in at PDPs. In the driving of the large-sustain-gap structure with a conventional ramp reset waveform, we cannot avoid the condition of an address being a cathode, which causes lots of trouble in stabilizing a reset discharge. To solve these problems, we use the square pulse instead of the conventional rising ramp pulse. Before making a strong discharge between the address (cathode) and scan (anode) electrodes, we make a priming discharge between the address (anode) and the scan (cathode) electrodes to stabilize the strong discharge in which the address electrodes are the cathode. With this scheme, we obtained 60V minimum address voltage and 145V maximum address voltage in $250{\mu}m$ and $350{\mu}m$ gap structures.

  • The airborne radiation monitoring has been used in geophysics for more than forty years and now it also has its important role in emergency monitoring. The aircraft background and the cosmic gamma-rays contribute to the measured gamma spectrum on the aircraft board. This adverse effect should be eliminated before the data processing. The paper describes two semiparametric methods to estimate the full spectrum aircraft background and cosmic gamma-ray contribution from spectra measured at altitudes where terrestrial contribution is negligible. The methods only assume to know possible peak positions in spectra and their full width at half maximum, that can be easily obtained e.g. from terrestrial measurement. The methods were applied to real experimental data acquired on Mi-17 and Bell 412 helicopter boards. The IRIS airborne gamma-ray spectrometer, with 4×4 L NaI(Tl) crystals, produced by Pico Envirotec Inc., Canada, was used on helicopters' boards. To obtain valid estimate of the aircraft background and the cosmic contribution, the measurements over sea and large water areas were carried out. However, the satisfactory results over inland were also achieved comparing with those acquired over large water areas.
