We have performed a systematic study of interstellar dust grains in various environments of galaxies. AKARI has revealed the detailed properties of dust grains not only in star-forming regions but also in regions not relevant to star formation, some of which are found not to follow our old empirical knowledge. Because of its unique capabilities, AKARI has provided new knowledge on the processing of large grains and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). For example, we detect PAHs from elliptical galaxies, which show unusual spectral features and spatial distributions, demonstrating importance of material processing in the interstellar space. We find that copious amounts of large grains and PAHs are flowing out of starburst galaxies by galactic superwinds, which are being shattered and destroyed in galactic haloes. We discover evidence for graphitization of carbonaceous grains near the center of our Galaxy, providing a clue to understanding the activity of the Galactic center. We review the results obtained from our AKARI program, focusing on the processing of carbonaceous grains in various environments of galaxies.
The grain size of a cross-section of $8{\mu}m$-thick copper film was determined by electron backscatter diffraction analysis. Grain size distribution histogram showed the presence of a large fraction of small-sized grains, and the mean grain size was significantly affected by handling of them. A cut-off grain size, below which all grains are ignored as noise and eliminated for the calculation of the mean value, should be three or four times as large as the step size. Due to the presence of small grains, the linear intercept method derived larger mean grain size, which depends less sensitively on the cut-off grain size than the equivalent circle diameter method.
From 32 angiosperm species, pollen surface characters such as sculpture pattern, roughness, oil abundance and stickiness were subjectively scored, and compared with size and weight of the grains, and pollination mechanisms. There was a linear relationship between size and weight of the grains. Animal-pollinated grains showed significantly higher roughness, oil abundance and stickiness than wind-pollinated grains. In the former, the grain size was highly correlated with roughness and oil abundance. No such relationship was found in the latter. It was suggested, therefore, that the large the animal-pollinated grains, the greater is the stickiness required, where the stickiness depends on the surface soil abundance and roughness. No functional significance of the sculpture pattern could not be detected in this study.

The ARB (Accumulative Rolling Bonding) Process was applied to a 6061 Al alloy to obtain ultra-fine grains. After 4 ARB cycles at $315^{\circ}C$, original equilibrium large grains were transformed to ultra-fine grains of several hundred nano-meter size with nonequilibrium grain boundaries. At lower number of cycles, microsutcture of highly-tangled dislocation cells were observed. Large grains and coarsened precipitates filled the microstructure of specimens experienced ARB cycles more than 5. Sliding wear tests using a pin-on-disk type wear tester were conducted on the ARB processed 6061 Al alloy plate. Wear rates of the 6061 Al alloy increased with the increase of ARB cycle number as well as the applied load. Worn surfaces and debris, cross-sections of the worn specimen were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the wear mechanism of the ultra-fine grained 6061 Al Tensile properties of the 6061 Al alloy were also studied and used to correlate the wear test results with the microstructures, which evolved continuously with the number of ARB cycles.
Pd/(Pt/Co/Pt) modulated multilayer films have been deposited on various substrates with Pd/Pt buffer layers. Films grown at different temperatures have very distinct magnetic properties and surface microstructures. Atomic force(AFM) and scanning tunneling (STM) microscopies studies of these films reveal that films deposited at room temperature have small grain structures with an average grain size of about $140\;{\AA}$. However, much larger grains of about $1200\;{\AA}$ in size are observed in the films grown on buffer layers which were deposited at $500^{\circ}C$. These large grains are found to actually consist of smaller grains of about $170{\AA}$ in diameter. SQUID magnetic and Kerr hysteresis loop measurements indicate that multilayer films with large grains exhibit high magnetic coercivities of around 5 kOe. A subgrain growth model is proposed to understand the observed grain structures in the multilayers.
A characteristic mineralogical zonal distribuion is observed in a large scale(whole ore- body) small scales(handy specimens). They show similar chemical variations: most of elements except CaO were supplied by hydrothermal fluids to form skarns. Garnets occuring in the pyroxene-garnet skarn have a wide range of chemical composition ranging from andradite to grossularite, while individual grains of the garnets also show a similar zonation of chemical composition varied between grossularite and andradite. Highly contained Mo-bearing scheelites are generally concentrated in the central part of the Sang- dong skarn orebody. Similarly, some large grains of scheelite show a nice zonation due to different contents of Mo, highly enriched in the core of the scheelite crystal. This geochemical similarity in the large scale and small scales suggests the Sangdong skarn formation was achieved under a certain chemical environment, and detailed studies on a small scale texture could be a clue to understand a whole ore deposit.
Fine (~0.09 $\mu$m) $\beta$-SiC Powders with 3.3wt% of large (~0.44$\mu$m) $\alpha$-SiC of $\beta$-SiC particles (seeds) added were hotpressed at 175$0^{\circ}C$ using $Y_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$ and CaO as sintering aids and then annealed at 185$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 h to enhance grain growth. The resultant microstructure and polytypes were analyzed by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM).Growth of $\beta$-SiC with high density of microtwins and formation of ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ composite grains consisting of $\alpha$-SiC domain sandwiched between $\beta$-SiC domains were found in both specimens. When large $\alpha$-SiC (mostly 6H) seeds were added, the $\beta$-SiC transformend preferentially to the 6H polytype. In contrast, when large $\beta$-SiC (3C) seeds were added, the fine $\beta$-SiC transformed preferentially to the 4H polytype. Such results suggested that the polytype formation in SiC was influenced by crystalline form of seeds added as well as the chemistry of sintering aids. The ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ interface played and important role in the formation of elongated grains as evidenced by presence of ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ composite grains with high aspect ratio.
Size>; and sculpture pattern of pollen grains in seven species and two varieties of the genus Lilium in Korea were examined by LM and SEM, and their evolutionary trends were discussed. Lilium species in Korea can be divided into two groups based on pollen morphology: one is small reticulate group with small pollen grains and lumens, which includes L. concolor var. pulchellum and L. callosum; the other is large reticulate group with large pollen grains and lumens, which includes remaining taxa. It is thought that small reticulate group is more primitive than large reticulate group on the basis of tectum coverage. According to the above results and some morphological characters of salles and perianth segments, L. concolor var. pulchellum and L. callosum are very closely related, and they would be treated under the same subsection.ection.
The author examined for observing the structures of pyrenoid and cell wall of three strains of Chlorella ellipsoidea and relation of pyrenoid to starch grain formation at the ultrastructure level. 1. The development of pyrenoid of Chlorella species from the time of its initiation and its subdetail sequent activities are described in some pictures. 2. Close correlation between the findings of light microscopy and electron microscopy is proved. 3. The pyrenoid is a dynamic organellae which continues to change its appearance thoughout the development of the Chlorella cell. 4. The starch grains are continously formed by deposition of carbohydrate within the chloroplast with the aid of pyrenoid factors. 5. Some parental starch grains are passed on the daughter cell during cell division. 6. The Da stage cells contain only chlaroplast without pyrenoid matrix. In Da stage a pyrenoid is surrounded by starch and starch grains appear in chloroplast lamellae. In $L_1L_2$ stages, large starch grains of lens form accumulate in cell. In $L_3$ stage pyrenoid disappears for a time and starch grains are scattered. In cell division stage starch grains are divided into four groups. In $L_4$ stage, pyrenoid substance appears temporarily and disappears soon. At this stage the cell is constituted of Dn cell containing chloroplast only. 7. The cellular boundary of JE strain except Y 815 and Y 511 strain contains 250.angs. intermediate layer of unknown chemical composition between the fibrillar cellulose wall and the out capsule layer.
No reliable basic data were available on the kinetic friction coefficients between grains and frictional surfaces being used in grain handling equipments in Korea. In order to determine appropriate kinetic friction coefficient between three grains (Tongil, Jinheung, barley) and two surfaces at four levels of moisture content of grain, the laboratory tests using the newly designed experimental apparatus and strain gage measuring system were carried out, and the relationship among factors that affect kinetic friction coefficients of grains were analyzed. The results of this study are summarized as follows ; 1. Kinetic friction coefficient of samples being tested was dependent on surfaces and moisture content of grains . The ranges of them were 0.369-0.512 for Tongil variety , 0.347-0.469 for Jinheung variety, and 0.360-0.502 for barley, respectively. 2. There was a little difference of kinetic friction coefficients between two varieties of rice at the same testing conditions. Because the interaction had been large among treatments , each value of kinetic friction coefficient determined in this study should be used only for the corresponding conditions in this study . 3. Kinetic friction coefficients in creased linearly with increase in moisture content of grains and their regression equations were shown in Table.4. 4. Kinetic friction coefficients on a PVC surfaces was shown a little lower values than on the steel surfaces at various moisture levels, but especially in Jinheung and barley, a big difference was shown.
