There is a growing interest in ubiquitous-related research and applications. Among them, GPS-based LBS have been developed and used actively. Recently, with the increase of large size buildings and disastrous events, indoor spaces are getting attention and related research activities are being carried out. Core technologies regarding indoor applications may include 3D indoor data modeling and localization sensor techniques that can integrate with indoor data. However, these technologies have not been standardized and established enough to be applied to indoor implementation. Thus, in this paper, we propose a method to build a relatively simple 3D indoor data modeling technique that can be applied to indoor location based applications. The proposed model takes the form of 2D-based multi-layered structure and has capability for 2D and 3D visualization. We tested three prototype applications using the proposed model; CA(cellular automata)-based 3D evacuation simulation, network-based routing, and indoor moving objects tracking using a stereo camera.
Sort-last parallel rendering using a cluster of GPUs has been widely used as an efficient method for visualizing large- scale volume datasets. The performance of this method is constrained by load balancing when data parallelism is included. In previous works static partitioning could lead to self-balance when only task level parallelism is included. In this paper, we present a load balancing scheme that adapts to the characteristic of volume dataset when data parallelism is also employed. We effectively combine the hierarchical data structures (octree and BSP tree) in order to skip empty regions and distribute workload to corresponding rendering nodes. Moreover, we also exploit a 3D clustering method to determine visibility order and save the AGP bandwidths on each rendering node. Experimental results show that our scheme can achieve significant performance gains compared with traditional static load distribution schemes.
Text mining is one of the big data analysis methods that extracts meaningful information from atypical large-scale text data. In this study, text mining was used to monitor citizens' opinions on the policies and systems being implemented. We collected 5,108 newspaper articles and 748 online cafe posts related to 'Gyeonggi Lacal Currency' and performed frequency analysis, TF-IDF analysis, association analysis, and word tree visualization analysis. As a result, many articles related to the purpose of introducing local currency, the benefits provided, and the method of use. However, the contents related to the actual use of local currency were written in the online cafe posts. In order to revitalize local currency, the news was involved in the promotion of local currency as an informant. Online cafe posts consisted of the opinions of citizens who are local currency users. SNS and text mining are expected to effectively activate various policies as well as local currency.

As IoT systems such as smart farms and smart cities become popular, a large amount of data collected from many sensor nodes is sent to a server in the Internet, which causes network traffic explosion, delay in delivery, and increase of server's workload. To solve these problems, the concept of fog computing has been proposed to store data between IoT systems and servers. In this study, we implemented a software platform of the fog node and applied it to the prototype smart farm system in order to check whether the problems listed above can be solved when using the fog node. When the fog node is used, the time taken to control an IoT device is lower than the response time of the existing IoT device-server case. We confirmed that it can also solve the problem of the Internet traffic explosion and the workload increase in the server. We also showed that the intelligent control of IoT system is feasible by having the data visualization in the server and real time remote control, emergency notification in the fog node as well as data storage which is the basic capability of the fog node.
The purpose of this study was to explore preservice elementary teachers' perceptions on models used in science and science education. Participants were sixty-one undergraduate students who were enrolled in a science education course offered at a university of education located in a mid-sized city, Korea. Data were obtained from the participants at the beginning of the course when they provided their answers to a questionnaire about models. The analysis revealed that a large number of the preservice teachers perceived models as representative of physical realities. By contrast, a relatively small number of them viewed models as representations of ideas or things like theories or hypotheses. Lots of the participants were apt to define a model from the perspective of its functions and considered the purposes of models communication, teaching, and understanding as well as visualization, simplification, and clarification. Most of the preservice teachers believed that there could be multiple models for a single target, and all of them answered that models could be changed in science. It was therefore concluded that the preservice teachers perceived properly the multiplicity and variability of models. Nevertheless, they could not elaborate how a model is used and evaluated in the process of scientific inquiry, and just a few of them mentioned the detailed nature of models. The preservice teachers possessed teacher-centered views of using models in the science classroom, and a small number of them remarked that they were going to use models for students to develop their own models and perform scientific inquiry.
Passenger safety is one of the most important considerations in the purchase of an automobile. A curtain-type air bag is increasingly adapted in deluxe cars for protecting passengers from the danger of side clash. Inflator housing is a main part of the curtain-type air bag system for supplying high-pressure gases to pump up the air bag-curtain. Although the inflator housing is fundamental in designing a curtain-type air bag system, flow information on the inflator housing is very limited. In this study, we measured instantaneous velocity fields of a high-speed flow ejecting from the inflator housing using a dynamic PIV system. From the velocity field data measured at a high frame-rate, we evaluated the variation of the mass flow rate with time. From the instantaneous velocity fields of flow ejecting from the airbag inflator housing in the initial stage, we can see a flow pattern of broken shock wave front and its downward propagation. The flow ejecting from the inflator housing was found to have large velocity fluctuations and the maximum velocity was about 700m/s. The velocity of high-speed flow was decreased rapidly and the duration of high-speed flow over 400m/s was maintained only to 30ms. After 100ms, there was no perceptible flow.
Three-dimensional (3D) velocity field information of a laminar flow in a curved micro tube of circular cross-section has been measured using a digital micro holographic particle tracking velocimetry (HPTV). The temporal evolution of instantaneous velocity field of a water flow in a curved micro tube of $100\;{\mu}\;m$ and $300\;{\mu}\;m$ in inner diameter was obtained. The 3D mean velocity field distribution was obtained quantitatively by statistical-averaging of instantaneous velocity fields. At low Dean number (De), a secondary flow was not generated in the curved tube. With increasing Dean number, the secondary flow constituted of two large-scale counter-rotating vortices was formed due to enhanced centrifugal force. To reveal the flow characteristics of high Dean numbers, trajectories of fluid particles were evaluated experimentally from the 3D velocity fields data measured by the HPTV technique. The present experimental results, especially the 3D particle trajectories, would be helpful to design and to understand the mixing phenomena in 3D curved passages of various curved micro-tubes or micro-channels.

Social media have emerged as new communication channels between consumers and companies that generate a large volume of unstructured text data. This social media content, which contains consumers' opinions and interests, is recognized as valuable material from which businesses can mine useful information; consequently, many researchers have reported on opinion-mining frameworks, methods, techniques, and tools for business intelligence over various industries. These studies sometimes focused on how to use opinion mining in business fields or emphasized methods of analyzing content to achieve results that are more accurate. They also considered how to visualize the results to ensure easier understanding. However, we found that such approaches are often technically complex and insufficiently user-friendly to help with business decisions and planning. Therefore, in this study we attempt to formulate a more comprehensive and practical methodology to conduct social media opinion mining and apply our methodology to a case study of the oldest instant noodle product in Korea. We also present graphical tools and visualized outputs that include volume and sentiment graphs, time-series graphs, a topic word cloud, a heat map, and a valence tree map with a classification. Our resources are from public-domain social media content such as blogs, forum messages, and news articles that we analyze with natural language processing, statistics, and graphics packages in the freeware R project environment. We believe our methodology and visualization outputs can provide a practical and reliable guide for immediate use, not just in the food industry but other industries as well.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have become popular as an approach for the identification of large numbers of phenotype-associated variants. However, differences in genetic architecture and environmental factors mean that the effect of variants can vary across populations. Understanding population genetic diversity is valuable for the investigation of possible population specific and independent effects of variants. EvoSNP-DB aims to provide information regarding genetic diversity among East Asian populations, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Non-redundant SNPs (1.6 million) were genotyped in 54 Korean trios (162 samples) and were compared with 4 million SNPs from HapMap phase II populations. EvoSNP-DB provides two user interfaces for data query and visualization, and integrates scores of genetic diversity (Fst and VarLD) at the level of SNPs, genes, and chromosome regions. EvoSNP-DB is a web-based application that allows users to navigate and visualize measurements of population genetic differences in an interactive manner, and is available online at [http://biomi.cdc.go.kr/EvoSNP/].

To address the need for autonomous control of remote and distributed mobile systems, Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications are rapidly gaining attention from both academia and industry. M2M communications have recently been deployed in smart grid, home networking, health care, and vehicular networking environments. This paper focuses on M2M communications in the vehicular networking context and investigates areas where M2M principles can improve vehicular networking. Since connected vehicles are essentially a network of machines that are communicating, preferably autonomously, vehicular networks can benefit a lot from M2M communications support. The M2M paradigm enhances vehicular networking by supporting large-scale deployment of devices, cross-platform networking, autonomous monitoring and control, visualization of the system and measurements, and security. We also present some of the challenges that still need to be addressed to fully enable M2M support in the vehicular networking environment. Of these, component standardization and data security management are considered to be the most significant challenges.
