  • A cantilever-type piezoelectric generator has advantages of simple structure, ease of fabrication and large displacement by transverse vibration of a beam. It is easy to control the natural frequency, and also possible to increase the output power by changing the length, width, and thickness of the generator. In particular, the length increases, the natural frequency sharply decreases, and vice versa. Hence, the natural frequency can widely be controlled by using change in the length of elastic body. In this paper, the generator was designed and fabricated to change natural frequency using the slides of the case. In addition, the generating characteristics were confirmed through finite element analyses and vibration experiment. As a result, the maximum output characteristics could be generated due to resonance phenomenon although any frequency of external force was applied.

  • An active vibration control technique of a time-varying cantilever beam is proposed in this study. A simple in-house coil sensor instead of expensive commercial sensors was used to measure the vibrational displacement of the beam. Active band pass filters and artificial neutral net works detect the frequencies, amplitudes, and phases of the main vibration mode. The time constants of the low pass filter representing the positive position feedback controller are updated in real-time, which generates the control voltage input to actuate the piezoelectric actuator and suppress the vibration. An experiment was successfully performed to verify the algorithm for a cantilever beam, which fundamental natural frequency arbitrarily varies between 9 Hz ~ 18 Hz. The present active vibration suppression technique can be applied to variety of structures which undergoes large variation of dynamic characteristics while operating.

  • Elastic constraints are usually simplified as "spring forces" exerted on beam ends without considering the "spring deformation". The partial differential equation governing the free vibrations of a cantilever Bernoulli-Euler beam considering the deformation of elastic constraints is firstly established, and is nondimensionalized to obtain two dimensionless factors, $k_v$ and $k_r$, describing the effects of elastically vertical and rotational end constraints, respectively. Then the frequency equation for the above Bernoulli-Euler beam model is derived using the method of separation of variables. A numerical analysis method is proposed to solve the transcendental frequency equation for the continuous change of the frequency with $k_v$ and $k_r$. Then the mode shape functions are given. Finally, effects of $k_v$ and $k_r$ on free vibration characteristics of the beam with different slenderness ratios are calculated and analyzed. The results indicate that the effects of $k_v$ are larger on higher-order free vibration characteristics than on lower-order ones, and the impact strength decreases with slenderness ratio. Under a relatively larger slenderness ratio, the effects of $k_v$ can be neglected for the fundamental frequency characteristics, while cannot for higher-order ones. However, the effects of $k_r$ are large on both higher- and lower-order free vibration characteristics, and cannot be neglected no matter the slenderness ratio is large or small.

  • It is a common failure type that high-filled embankment slope sideslips. The deformation mechanism and factors influencing the sideslip of embankment slope is the key to reduce the probability of this kind of engineering disaster. Taking Liujiawan high-filled embankment slope as an example, the deformation and failure characteristics of embankment slope and sheet-pile wall are studied, and the factors influencing instability are analyzed, then the correlation of deformation rate of the anti-slide plies and each factor is calculated with multivariate linear regression analysis. The result shows that: (1) The length of anchoring segment is not long enough, and displacement direction of embankment and retaining structure are perpendicular to the trend of the highway; (2) The length of the cantilever segment is so large that the active earth pressures behind the piles are very large. Additionally, the surface drainage is not smooth, which leads to form a potential sliding zone between bottom of the backfill and the primary surface; (3) The thickness of the backfill and the length of the anti-slide pile cantilever segment have positive correlation with the deformation whereas the thickness of anti-slide pile through mudstone has a negative correlation with the deformation. On the other hand the surface water is a little disadvantage on the embankment stability.

  • In this paper, nonlinear static analysis of three-dimensional cable stayed bridges is performed for the time dependent materials properties such as creep, shrinkage and aging of concrete and relaxation of cable. Manavgat Cable-Stayed Bridge is selected as an application. The bridge located in Antalya, Turkey, was constructed with balanced cantilever construction method. Total length of the bridge is 202 m. The bridge consists of one $\ddot{e}$ shape steel tower. The tower is at the middle of the bridge span. The construction stages and 3D finite element model of bridge are modeled with SAP2000. Large displacement occurs in these types of bridges so geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration in the analysis by using P-Delta plus large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Two different finite element analyses carried out which are evaluated with and without construction stages and results are compared with each other. As a result of these analyses, variation of internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge tower and displacement and bending moment for bridge deck are given with detailed. It is seen that construction stage analysis has a remarkable effect on the structural behavior of the bridge.

  • A thermal micro actualtor has been fabricated using surface micromachining techniques. It consists of doped ploysilicon as a moving part and TEOS(Tetra Ethyl Ortho Silicate) as a sacrificial layer. The polysilicon was annealed for the reduction of residual stress which is the main cause to its deformation such as bending and buckling. And the newly developed HF VPE(vapor phase etching)process was also used as an effective release method for the elimination of sacrificaial layer. With noliquid involved during any of the steps for relasing, unlike other reported relase techniques, the HF VPE pocess has produced polysilicon microstructures with virtually no process-induced stiction problem. The actuation is incured by the thermal expasion due to current flow in active polysilicon cantilever, which motion is amplified bylever mechanism. The thickness of pllysilicon is 2 .mu. m and the length of active and passive polysilicon cantilever are 500 .mu. m, respectively. The moving distance of polysilicon actuator was experimentally conformed as large as 21 .mu. m at the input voltage level of 10 V and 50Hz square wave. These micro actuator technology can be utilized for the fabrication of MEMS (microlectromechanical system) such as microrelay, which requires large displacement or contact force but relatively slow response.

  • One of the major advantages of using engineering plastics is ease of part assembly through a locking mechanism known as a snap fit. The typical snap fit involves a short cantilever beam with a projection at the free end. which slides over a one way ramp on the mating part to lock in place. The tightness of the mechanism is determined by the lateral interference of the two sliding members If too small they become loose and can't hold together. while if too large. excessive force can be generated. causing failure of the cantilever beam during the assembly operation. Therefore. the accurate determination of the force-deflection relationship for cantilever beams is a key element in snap fit design. And also. the process of injection molding should be considered when cantilever beam is designed. But it is not easy for novice designers to design them appropriately because of the profound knowledge related to injection molding. In this paper. an intelligent design program has been developed and proposed to improve a conventional empirical design method.

  • We develop a fiber optic acceleration sensor with LED, PD, POF, and a cantilever beam, having film grating at the edge of the beam. Light is transmitted from LED to PD through the film grating. When the cantilever beam moves by external vibration, output light is modulated as sinusoidal signals. The characteristics of output signals are dominated by the spacing of the film grating and also by the size and the elasticity of the beam. Two output signals, having constant initial phase difference, are obtained by two gratings with 90 degree phase difference. Those two signals are used to determine phase angle, which is proportional to the displacement of the beam. Finally, the acceleration is determined from conversion equation between displacement and acceleration. This sensor is designed for monitoring the vibration of large and complex building in the low frequency range of below 7 Hz, and is particularly suitable to measure acceleration in electromagnetic environments.

  • Dynamic stability of an axially oscillating cantilever beam is investigated in this paper. The equations of motion are derived and transformed into non-dimensional ones. The equations include harmonically oscillating parameters which originate from the motion-induced stiffness variation. Using the equations, the multiple scale perturbation method is employed to obtain a stability diagram. The stability diagram shows that relatively large unstable regions exist around the frequencies of the first bending natural frequency, twice the first bending natural frequency, and twice the second bending natural frequency. The validity of the diagram is proved by direct numerical simulations of the dynamic system.

  • A method is developed for solving the elastica of cantilever beam subjected to a tip point load and uniform load. The Bernoulli-Euler differential equation of deflected beam is used. The Runge-Kutta method and the Regula Falsi method are used to perform the integration of the differential eqution and to determine the horizontal deflection, respectively. The horizontal and vertical deflections of the free end, and the free-end rotations are calculated for a range of parameters representing variations in tip point load and uniform load. All results are presented in nondimensional forms. And some typical elastic are also presented.
