  • Large area flicker is one of the most annoying image defects, and it is an inherent characteristic of impulsively driven displays such as CRTs. Recently, LCDs have also adopted impulsive driving methods for improved motion picture quality, therefore LCDs can also show large area flicker. Existing metrics do not account for the non-linearity of human brightness perception. This paper presents an improved large area flicker metric to more accurately quantify large area display flicker performance.

  • The current display technology tends to be highly integrated with high resolution, the element size is gradually downsized, and the structure becomes complicated. Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) dry etcher of various types of etching equipment is a structure that places a large multi-divisional antenna source on the top lid, passes current to the Antenna, and generates plasma using the induced magnetic field generated at this time. However, in the case of a device of a large area size, a support that can withstand a load structurally is necessary, and when these support portions are applied, arrangement of antenna becomes difficult, which causes reduction in uniformity. As described above, the development of antenna source of a large area having a uniform plasma density on the whole surface is difficult to restrict hardware (H/W). As a solution to this problem, we confirmed the change in uniformity of plasma by applying two kinds of specific shape faraday shield(FICP) to the lower part of the large area upper lid antenna of 6 and 8th more than that generation size. In this thesis, we verify the faraday shield effect which can improve plasma uniformity control of ICP dry etcher equipment applied to medium and large displays.

  • Establishing and maintaining optimum lamp operating temperature is critically important in backlight systems for large area displays. The information presented in this paper is based upon work completed for a tiled 37.5" AM LCD, plus projections for a 37.5", 42" & 50" monolithic display. Due to the size of the units, a requirement for highly collimated light and a requirement for high brightness, >550 nits at the display surface, significant wattage is required which generates high heat levels in the backlight display assembly and potentially, at the display rear surface. Uniformity of illumination becomes an important element in the system design because of the large area involved.

  • We present the high-brightness large-area 10.1" in-cell polarizer display panel integrated with a wire grid polarizer (WGP) and metal reflector, from the initial design to final system development in a commercially feasible level. We have modeled and developed the WGP architecture integrated with the metal reflector in a single in-cell layer, to achieve excellent polarization efficiency as well as brightness enhancement through the light recycling effect. After the optimization of key experimental parameters via Taguchi method, the roll nanoimprint lithography employing a flexible large-area tiled mold has been utilized to create the 90 nm-pitch polymer resist pattern with the 54.1 nm linewidth and 5.1 nm residual layer thickness. The 90 nm-pitch Al gratings with the 51.4 nm linewidth and 2150 Å height have been successfully fabricated after subsequent etch process, providing the in-cell WGPs with high optical performance in the entire visible light regime. Finally we have integrated the WGP in a commercial 10.1" display device and demonstrated its actual operation, exhibiting 1.24 times enhancement of brightness compared to a conventional film polarizer-based one, with the contrast ratio of 1,004:1. Polarization efficiency and transmittance of the developed WGPs in an in-cell polarizer panel achieve 99.995 % and 42.3 %, respectively.

  • Recently there have been considerable attentions on nanoimprint lithography (NIL) by the display device and semiconductor industry due to its potential abilities that enable cost-effective and high-throughput nanofabrication. Although one of the current major research trends of NIL is large-area patterning, the technical difficulties to keep the uniformity of the residual layer become severer as the imprinting area increases more and more. In this paper we focused on the deformation of the $2^{nd}$ generation TFT-LCD sized ($370{\times}470mm^2$) large-area soft mold in the UV imprinting process. A mold was fabricated with PDMS(Poly-dimethyl Siloxane) layered glass back plate(t0.5). Besides, the mold includes large surrounding wall type protrusions of 1.9 mm width and the via-hole(7 ${\mu}m$ diameter) patterend area. The large surrounding wall type protrusions cause the proximity effect which severely degrades the uniformity of residual layer in the via-hole patterend area. Therefore the deformation of the mold was calculated by finite element analysis to assess the effect of large surrounding wall type protrusions and the flexiblity of the mold. The deformation of soft mold was verified by the measurements qualitatively.

  • We report the recent progress and future prospects of flexible, large-area sensors and actuator using organic thin-film transistors (TFTs). In particular, we describe printing technologies to manufacture electronic artificial skins (e-skins) for robots, sheet image scanners suitable for mobile applications, and Braille sheet display with plastic actuator arrays. We also present recent progress of reliability and stability issues.

  • Display is a key component in electronic devices. OLED is growing very fast recently due to the explosion of the smart phone market although still LCD is the dominating display technology in the display market at the moment. Also needs for the large area and high resolution TVs and flexible displays are increasing these days. Especially flexible display is expected to be one of the key technologies in mobile devices requiring small device size and large display size. Contrary to the conventional displays, flexible display requires organic materials for the substrate, the active driving element and also for the display element. Plastic film as a substrate, organic semiconductor as an active component of the transistor and organic light emitting materials or electronic paper as a display element are studied actively. In this article, mainly backplane technologies such as substrates and the transistor materials for flexible display will be introduced.

  • In this study, the characteristics of large area internal linear ICP sources of $1,020mm{\times}920mm$ (substrate area is $880mm{\times}660mm$) were investigated using a multiple linear antennas with U-type parallel connection. Using the multiple linear antennas with U-type parallel connection, a high plasma density of $2{\times}10^{11}/cm^3$ and a high power transfer efficiency of about 88% could be obtained at 5kW of RF power and with 20mTorr Ar. A low plasma potential of less than 26V and a low electron temperature of $2.6{\sim}3.2eV$ could be also obtained. The measured plasma uniformity on the substrate size of 4th generation $(880mm{\times}660mm)$ was about 4%, therefore, it is believed that the multiple linear antennas with U-type parallel connection can be successfully applicable to the large area flat panel display processing.

  • A backlight for large-area LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)-TVs has been developed using Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Performances of the backlight and the methods driving the LEDs are introduced in this research. A spectral relationship between the LEDs and the color filters of a panel were investigated as well. In order to realize a CRT like dynamic effect, the area-focused luminance control (AFLC) technology was adopted in developing the backlight. Thus, a possibility of applying the LEDs to the backlight for large-area LCD-TVs was systematically proved.
