Feasibility Study Of Functional Programming In Scala Language By Implementing An Interpreter

  • In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of functional programming in the Scala language. The main issue is to what extent Scala is able to handle major properties of functional programming such as lambda expression, high-order functions, generic types, algebraic data types, and monads. For this purpose, we implement an interpreter of an imperative language. In this implementation, the same functional programming techniques are applied to both Haskell and Scala languages, and then these two versions of implementations are compared and analyzed. The abstract syntax tree of an imperative language is expressed as algebraic data types with generics and enum classes in Scala, and the state transition of imperative languages is implemented by using state monad. Extension and given, new features of Scala, are used as well.

A Content Analysis of Journal Articles Using the Language Network Analysis Methods (언어 네트워크 분석 방법을 활용한 학술논문의 내용분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to perform content analysis of research articles using the language network analysis method in Korea and catch the basic point of the language network analysis method. Six analytical categories are used for content analysis: types of language text, methods of keyword selection, methods of forming co-occurrence relation, methods of constructing network, network analytic tools and indexes. From the results of content analysis, this study found out various features as follows. The major types of language text are research articles and interview texts. The keywords were selected from words which are extracted from text content. To form co-occurrence relation between keywords, there use the co-occurrence count. The constructed networks are multiple-type networks rather than single-type ones. The network analytic tools such as NetMiner, UCINET/NetDraw, NodeXL, Pajek are used. The major analytic indexes are including density, centralities, sub-networks, etc. These features can be used to form the basis of the language network analysis method.

Two Types of Cleft Constructions in Korean: A Constraint-Based Approach

  • Like English, Korean employs several complicated types of cleft constructions. This paper deals with two main types of Korean cleft constructions: predicational and identificational. It first reviews the formal properties of these two types and then provides a constraint-based analysis that can be computationally implemented. In particular, the paper assumes two types of noun KES (one as a common noun and the other as a bound noun) and treats the argument-gapped cleft clause similar to relative clauses while treating the adjunct-gapped cleft clause as a noun-complement construction. The paper further shows that the cleft constructions are closely linked to the copula constructions, sharing many common properties while having their own constructional constraints.

Sentence Type Identification in Korean Applications to Korean-Sign Language Translation and Korean Speech Synthesis (한국어 문장 유형의 자동 분류 한국어-수화 변환 및 한국어 음성 합성에의 응용)

  • This paper proposes a method of automatically identifying sentence types in Korean and improving naturalness in sign language generation and speech synthesis using the identified sentence type information. In Korean, sentences are usually categorized into five types: declarative, imperative, propositive, interrogative, and exclamatory. However, it is also known that these types are quite ambiguous to identify in dialogues. In this paper, we present additional morphological and syntactic clues for the sentence type and propose a rule-based procedure for identifying the sentence type using these clues. The experimental results show that our method gives a reasonable performance. We also describe how the sentence type is used to generate non-manual signals in Korean-Korean sign language translation and appropriate intonation in Korean speech synthesis. Since the method of using sentence type information in speech synthesis and sign language generation is not much studied previously, it is anticipated that our method will contribute to research on generating more natural speech and sign language expressions.

Grammaticality Judgement and Error Correction by Children with Developmental Language Impairments (경계선지능 언어발달장애아동과 일반아동의 문법성 판단 및 오류수정 - 조사를 중심으로 -)

  • In the present study, we investigated the grammaticality judgement skills of children with developmental language impairments. The participants included 20 children with language impairments of ages ranging from 7 to 9 years and of IQ's ranging from 71 to 84, and 40 normally developing children. Twenty normal children were matched with the language impaired children in their language ages and the other 20 normal children were matched with the language impaired children in their chronological ages. The children were asked to judge the grammatical correctness of 48 short sentences, half of which were ungrammatical sentences containing incorrect case-markers and the other half were grammatically correct sentences. Four types of case-markers including nominative "i/ga", accusative "ul/lul", locative "e," and instrumental "ro" were systematically changed to generate the ungrammatical sentences. The language impaired children performed worse than both groups of normally developing children in detecting the ungrammatical sentences and in correcting the case-markers of those sentences. In detecting the errors of ungrammatical sentences, the language impaired children exhibited variable performances across the different case-markers.

Study of Teachers' Language of Instruction Based on a Video of the Algebra Classroom - such as Two Cases of "The Multiplication and Division of the Fractions"

  • By using the recording and quantitative analysis of two videos about "The multiplication and division of the Fractions" and the "Flanders Interaction Analysis System," we classified the teachers' language of instruction in algebra classroom and also analysis the language of instruction in the different teaching process. The results after the analysis as follows: (1) The proportion of time was taken in teachers' language of instruction is high and vary in types, most of the teachers' language is teachers' question; (2) In the different teaching process, the proportion of time was taken in teachers' language of instruction is different; (3) Teachers attached importance to explain the example and had the similar teaching strategy, but the teachers' language is different; (4) In the practice process, teachers placed importance on exploring the tough question and its teaching strategies are different. The teachers' questions are the main teachers' language of instruction.

Teacher's corrective feedback: Focus on initiations to self-repair (학습자의 오류에 대한 교사의 오류 수정: 학습자 자기 교정 유도를 중심으로)

  • This study explores teacher's corrective feedback types in an error treatment sequence in Korean EFL classroom setting. Corrective feedback moves are coded as explicit correction, recast, or initiations to self-repair. The frequency and distribution of each corrective feedback type are examined. But the special focus was given on feedback types eliciting learner's self-repair (clarification request, metalinguistic feedback, elicitation, and repetition of error) because initiations to self-repair are believed to facilitate language learning more than other strategies. The results of the study are as follows. First, there was an overwhelming tendency for teacher to use recasts whereas initiations to self-repair were not used as much as recast (52.4% vs. 29.5%). Second, the teacher tended to select feedback types in accordance with error types: namely, recasts after phonological, lexical, and translation errors and initiations to self-repair after grammatical errors though the differences were not significant. Finally, teacher's belief and students' expectation on corrective feedback were compared with actual corrective feedback representations respectively and some mismatches were found. Though both teacher and the students acknowledged the importance and necessity of self-repair, self-repair were not put into practice as such. Therefore, this study suggests more initiations to self-repair be used for effective language learning.

Two Semantic Types of Korean Sluicing Constructions (슬루싱의 두 가지 의미 유형)

  • In this study, I attempt to show two points about Korean sluicing. First, the semantic source of the null subject of the copula phrase in Korean sluicing is a null pronoun. This null subject pronoun may refer to either the antecedent indefinite individual or the antecedent event of the preceding clause. Second, depending on the presence/absence of postpositions in the remant wh-phrase, sluicing constructions are classified into two different semantic types: i) an equative clause and ii) a predicational clause.

  • This study examines the acoustic characteristics of Korean stops of two dialect, Seoul and Daegu, 20 speakers of these two dialects were asked to read 15 words containing the stops of different places of articulation and phonation types at initial. The stops in the two dialects show mainly two acoustic differences. Firstly, There was a difference in distinctive features for phonetic types in the two dialects. Secondly, lenis revel fortis`s characters in Daegu dialect.

A Pregroup Analysis of Japanese Causatives

  • We explore a computational algebraic approach to grammar via pregroups. We examine how the structures of Japanese causatives can be treated in the framework of a pregroup grammar. In our grammar, the dictionary assigns one or more syntactic types to each word and the grammar rules are used to infer types to strings of words. We developed a practical parser representing our pregroup grammar, which validates our analysis.
