Landsat TM Based Land-cover Analysis of Cholwon (South Korea) and Wonsan (North Korea)

  • The land-cover of two regions of South and North Korea included in one Landsat TM scene was investigated by comparing different seasons and different band data over the multiple land-cover types. The relationships between the intensities of two bands in the 2-D plot are mainly linear in band2 versus band1 and band3 versus band1, polygonal sporadic in band5 versus band1 and band7 versus band1, and almost tri-polarized in band4 versus band3. The 2-D plot of band4/band3 shows the best capability to discriminate different main land-cover such as water, vegetation and dry soil. Some discriminations are not clear between city and dry field, or mountain and plain field in the scene of September. The digital number data of band4 from vegetated zones show stronger reflectance in September rather than April, while other band values tend to be lager in April than in September over each land-cover. NDVI presents high value in both regions in September. However the image of Wonsan area in April suggests weak vigor of vegetation in comparison with Cholwon area. Band ratios are very effective in eliminating the influence of the complex topography. The proper pairing of the band ratio improved the discrimination capability of the land-cover; band5/band2 for dry soil, band4/band3 for vegetation and band1/band7 for the water. The RGB combination of the three band ratio pairs showed the best results in the discrimination of the land-cover of Wonsan, Cholwon and even the Demilitarized Zone.

  • This article deals mainly with two objectives viz, 1) the potentiality of very high-resolution(VHR) multi-spectral and pan chromatic QuickBird satellite data in resources mapping over moderate resolution satellite data (IRS LISS III) and 2) the advantages of using object oriented classification method of eCognition software in land use and land cover analysis over the ISODATA classification method. These VHR data offers widely acceptable metric characteristics for cartographic updating and increase our ability to map land use in geometric detail and improve accuracy of local scale investigations. This study has been carried out in the Sukkalampatti mini-watershed, which is situated in the Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu, India. The eCognition object oriented classification method succeeded in most cases to achieve a high percentage of right land cover class assignment and it showed better results than the ISODATA pixel based one, as far as the discrimination of land cover classes and boundary depiction is concerned.

아틀라스 개념을 적용한 공간정보서비스 방안 - 토지피복지도를 사례로 - (A Study on the Strategies for Spatial Information Service based on the Concept of Atlas - A Case Study of Land Cover Map -)

  • 최근 들어 일반인의 공간정보 활용에 대한 수요가 증대되고 있는 가운데, 토지피복지도를 비롯한 국가공간정보의 구축이 증대되고 있다. 그러나 일반인을 대상으로 한 공간정보서비스가 미비하여 일반인의 공간정보 활용 증대를 기대하기 어려운 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 교육용 지리부도를 통해 우리에게 익숙한 아틀라스의 개념을 적용하여 일반인의 토지피복지도 활용을 증진할 수 있는 공간정보서비스 방안을 제안하였다. 이를 위해서 국내 토지피복지도의 활용 현황 및 해외사례를 검토하여 콘텐츠, 사용자, 활용 시스템의 측면에서 토지피복지도를 활용한 공간정보서비스의 개선 방향을 설정하고, 이를 보완할 수 있도록 아틀라스 개념을 기반으로 하는 아틀라스정보시스템의 특성과 기능을 정의하였으며, 환경공간정보서비스 제공 방안을 제시하였다. 이는 토지피복지도 뿐만 아니라 다양한 국가공간정보에 적용 가능하므로 일반인의 국가공간정보 활용 증진에 기여할 수 있다.

  • The objective of this study is to identify the applicability of land cover image classified by remotely sensed data ; Landsat TM merged by SPOT for hydrological applications such as SCS runoff estimation . By comparing the calssified land cover image with the statistical data, it was proved that hey are agreed well with little errors. As a simple application , SCS runoff estimation was tested by varying rainfall intensity and AMC with Soilmap classfied by hydrologica soil map.

  • Land cover change has been recognized as one of the most important factors influencing the occurrence of rainfall-triggered landslides. Satellite remote sensing provides detailed information regarding the spatial distribution and extent of land cover/use changes. This study describes the land cover changes in Nagasaki City, Japan and Kangnung City, South Korea. The former has been suffered from rainfall-triggered disasters for long term and latter was damaged by Typhoon Rusa in 2002. The results obtained from both study areas clearly show that land cover changes have occurred in the last decade as a result of both natural forces and human activities.

  • 토지피복도는 지표면의 상태를 나타내는 자료로 특히 환경 분야에서 지역의 현황을 파악하고 정책을 수립하기 위한 기초적인 자료이다. 토지피복도를 효과적으로 제작하기 위해서는 인공위성을 이용하여 한 지표면 현황에 대한 정보를 신속하게 수집하고, 이를 지리정보로 변환하여 구축하고 관리하여야한다. 본 연구에서는 우리나라 환경부에서 구축한 중분류 토지피복도의 제작과정을 검토하고, 이를 객관적이고 구체적으로 개선하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 국내외의 토지피복도 제작 현황과 문제점을 파악한 후, 중분류 토지피복도를 제작하기 위한 구체적이고 효과적인 개선방안을 제시하였다. 본 연구에서 제시한 경계선 설정기준과 속성정보 부여기준은 기존의 토지피복도 제작과정에서 나타난 문제점을 보완할 수 있었다.

The Utilization of Google Earth Images as Reference Data for The Multitemporal Land Cover Classification with MODIS Data of North Korea

  • One of the major obstacles to classify and validate Land Cover maps is the high cost of acquiring reference data. In case of inaccessible areas such as North Korea, the high resolution satellite imagery may be used for reference data. The objective of this paper is to investigate the possibility of utilizing QuickBird high resolution imagery of North Korea that can be obtained from Google Earth data via internet for reference data of land cover classification. Monthly MODIS NDVI data of nine months from the summer of 2004 were classified into L=54 cluster using ISODATA algorithm, and these L clusters were assigned to 7 classes - coniferous forest, deciduous forest, mixed forest, paddy field, dry field, water, and built-up areas - by careful use of reference data obtained through visual interpretation of the high resolution imagery. The overall accuracy and Kappa index were 85.98% and 0.82, respectively, which represents about 10% point increase of classification accuracy than our previous study based on GCP point data around North Korea. Thus we can conclude that Google Earth may be used to substitute the traditional reference data collection on the site where the accessibility is severely limited.

Modeling the Relationship between Land Cover and River Water Quality in the Yamaguchi Prefecture of Japan

  • This study investigated the relationship between land cover and the water quality variables in the rivers, which are located in the Yamaguchi prefecture of West Japan. The study area included 12 catchments covering $5,809\;Km^2$. pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended solid, E. coli, total nitrogen and total phosphorus were considered as river water quality variables. Satellite data was applied to generate land cover map. For linking alterations in land cover (at whole catchment and buffer zone levels) and the river water quality variables, multiple regression modeling was applied. The results indicated that non-spatial attribute (%) of land cover types (at whole catchment level) consistently explained high amounts of variation in biological oxygen demand (72%), suspended solid (72%) and total nitrogen (87%). At buffer zone-scale, multiple regression models that were developed to represent the linkage between the alterations of land cover and the river water quality variables could also explain high level of total variations in suspended solid (86%) and total nitrogen (91%).

Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) Change in Suburb of Central Himalayas: A Study from Chandragiri, Kathmandu

  • Rapid urbanization and population growth have caused substantial land use land cover (LULC) change in the Kathmandu valley. The lack of temporal and geographical data regarding LULC in the middle mountain region like Kathmandu has been challenging to assess the changes that have occurred. The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes in LULC in Chandragiri Municipality between 1996 and 2017 using geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing. Using Landsat imageries of 1996 and 2017, this study analyzed the LULC change over 21 years. The images were classified using the Maximum Likelihood classification method and post classified using the change detection technique in GIS. The result shows that severe land cover changes have occurred in the Forest (11.63%), Built-up areas (3.68%), Agriculture (-11.26%), Shrubland (-0.15%), and Bareland (-3.91%) in the region from 1996 to 2017. This paper highlights the use of GIS and remote sensing in understanding the changes in LULC in the south-west part of Kathmandu valley.

GIS 기반 CA-Markov 기법을 이용한 토지피복 변화에 따른 미래 유출량 전망 분석 (Outlook Analysis of Future Discharge According to Land Cover Change Using CA-Markov Technique Based on GIS)

  • 본 연구에서는 금강유역 내 용담댐 및 대청댐을 대상으로 SWAT 모형을 이용하여 미래 유출량 전망에 지배적인 인자로 작용하는 토지피복 변화에 따른 유출량 변화를 분석하였다. Landsat TM 위성영상을 이용하여 과거 1990년 및 1995년 토지피복 자료를 관측 자료로 사용하여 CA-Markov 연쇄기법에 의한 2000년 토지피복도를 모의하여 비교 검증을 한 후 향후 2050년과 2100년의 토지피복변화를 모의하였다. 이를 SWAT모형의 입력 자료로 이용하여 A1B 시나리오하에서 토지피복 변화 전 후의 유출량을 비교 분석 하였다. 금강유역에 대한 토지피복에 대한 경년별 추세 분석결과 산림과 논은 꾸준히 감소하고 주거지, 나지, 초지 등은 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 미래 토지피복의 변화를 고려한 유출 변화 분석결과, 토지피복의 변화를 고려한 유출량이 토지피복의 변화를 고려하지 않았을 때보다 전체적으로 1.83~2.87%로 소폭 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.
