The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of spatial characteristics, such as land cover and topography, on heat wave days from the city of Milyang, which has recently drawn attention for its heat wave problems. The number of heat wave days was calculated utilizing RCP-based South Korea climate data from 2000 to 2010. Land cover types were reclassified into urban area, agricultural area, forest area, water, and grassland using 2000, 2005, and 2010 land cover data constructed by the Ministry of Environment. Topographical features were analyzed by topographic position index (TPI) using a digital elevation model (DEM) with 30 m spatial resolution. The results show that the number of heat wave days was 31.4 days in 2000, which was the highest, followed by 26.9 days in 2008, 24.2 days in 2001, and 24.0 days in 2010. The heat wave distribution was relatively higher in agricultural areas, valleys, and rural areas. The topography of Milyang contains more mountainous slope (51.6%) than flat (19.7%), while large-scale valleys (12.2%) are distributed across some of the western region. Correlation analysis between heat wave and spatial characteristics showed that the correlation between forest area land cover and number of heat wave days was negative (-0.109), indicating that heat wave can be mitigated. Topographically, flat areas and heat wave showed a positive correlation (0.305). These results provide important insights for urban planning and environmental management for understanding the impact of land development and topographic change on heat wave.
The purpose of this study was to find out how different types of land use around green belts affect temperature decrease effects. For this, temperatures within and outside of green belts were measured. Based on the collected data, the study analyzed the land cover status and temperatures within green belts, temperature decrease effects and the range of effects around green belts, and the correlation between trees and temperature decrease effects by way of regression analysis. As a result, areas of the high temperature within green belts were formed on paved surfaces, whereas areas of low temperature were formed around forests or water surfaces. In addition, deviation was bigger in the highest temperature than the lowest one for areas of Leeward around green belts, but in general, there was a tendency that temperature became low near to green belts. As for the relation between land cover rate and temperature, what was effective to temperature decrease included forests, pasture and water surfaces. On the other hand, the effects of temperature decrease varied depending on increase or decrease of land cover rates. As for the influence of the different land use types around green belts on temperature decrease effects, the Shakuzi Park showed relatively stronger effects than the Ageomaruyama Park.
MODIS images have a great advantage of high temporal resolution to monitor land cover changes in a large area. The moderate and low spatial resolution satellite images are incomparably economic than high resolution satellite images. As diverse satellite images are provided recently, strategies using satellite images are necessary for continuous, effective and long-term land monitoring. This research purposed to use MODIS images to monitor land cover in Korean peninsula for long-term and continuous change detection. To maximize the advantages of high temporal resolution, the change detection was based on the MODIS temporal profiles of the surface reflectance for one year. In this study as the reflectance patterns of year 2005 were compared with the reflectance patterns of year 2007, the changed pixels could be detected during two years. To set up the threshold value for the decision of change, ASTER images with the higher spatial resolution, 15m, were used for this study. The test area covered the suburban area of metropolitan city, Seoul, where the landcover changes have been frequently happened.
As long as the effective contributions of satellite images in the continuous monitoring of the wide area and long range of time period, Landsat TM and Landsat ETM+ satellite images are surveyed. After quantization and classification of the deviations between TM and ETM+ images based on approved thresholds such as gains and biases or offsets, a correlation analysis method for the compared calibration is suggested in this paper. Four time points of raster data for 15 years of the highest group of land surface temperature and the lowest group of vegetation of the Kunsan city Chollabuk_do Korea located beneath the Yellow sea coast, are observed and analyzed their correlations for the change detection of urban land cover. This experiment based on proposed algorithm detected strong and proportional correlation relationship between the highest group of land surface temperature and the lowest group of vegetation index which exceeded R=(+)0.9478, so the proposed Correlation Analysis Model between the highest group of land surface temperature and the lowest group of vegetation index will be able to give proof an effective suitability to the land cover change detection and monitoring.

The objective of this study was to evaluate land cover classification of PyeongTaeg area by Landsat Thematic Mapper Data June, 1997. This study was also to make more correct reference data using DGPS, aerophoto, and topographical chart etc.. The result of the area of paddy and upland were estimated 4,949 $\textrm{km}^2$ and 16,157 $\textrm{km}^2$, respectively. Correctness of estimation by using DGPS, aerophoto, topographical chart were shown over 90% correct in case of rice paddy field, water, and sea, while upland, vinyl house, forest, grassland, village were shown low correctness. Total average accuracy was shown to be 85.8%. Correctness of paddy field showed high value of 92%, showing that use of remote sensing data was proved to be effective methods to estimate spatial distribution and cultivation status of paddy field. Classification result of sea, water area, downtown had higher correctness, while upland, vinyl-house, grassland were proved to be relatively low correctness because of it's small area and mixed distribution.

The importance of establishing a greenhouse gas inventory is emerging for policymaking and its implementation to cope with climate change. Thus, it is needed to establish Approach 3 level Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) matrix that is spatially explicit regarding land use classifications and changes. In this study, four types of spatial information suitable for establishing the LULUCF matrix were analyzed - Cadastral Map, Land Cover Map, Forest Map, and Biotope Map. This research analyzed the classification properties of each type of spatial information and compared the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the maps in Boryeong city. Drawn from the conclusions of the quantitative comparison, the forest area showed the maximum difference of 50.42% ($303.79km^2$) in the forest map and 46.09%($276.65km^2$) in the cadastral map. The qualitative comparison drew five qualitative characteristics: data construction scope difference, data construction purpose difference, classification standard difference, and classification item difference. As a result of the study, it was evident that the biotope map was the most appropriate spatial information for the establishment of the LULUCF matrix. In addition, if the LULUCF matrix is made by integrating the biotope, the forest map, and the land cover map, the limitations of each spatial information would be improved. The accuracy of the LULUCF matrix is expected to be improved when the map of the level-3 land cover map and the biotope map of 1:5,000 covering the whole country are completed.

The purpose of this study is to estimate monthly evapotranspiration (ET) using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) obtained from NOAA-AVHRR data sets. Actual evapotranspiration was evaluated by the complementary relationship, and monthly NDVI was obtained by maximum value composite method from daily NDVI images in the Korean peninsula for the year 2001 The monthly actual ETs for each land cover were compared with the monthly NDVIs to determine relationships between actual ET and NDVI for each land cover category, There was a high correlation between monthly NDVI and monthly mean actual ET. This study presents an alternative approach for land surface evapotranspiration based on remote sensing techniques.

Land cover maps are derived from satellite and aerial images by the Ministry of Environment for the entire Korea since 1998. Even with their wide application in many sectors, their usage in research community is limited. The main reason for this is the map compilation cycle varies too much over the different regions. The situation requires us a new and quicker methodology for generating land cover maps. This study was conducted to automatically generate land cover map using aerial ortho-images and Landsat 8 satellite images. The input aerial and Landsat 8 image data were trained by Residual U-Net, one of the deep learning-based segmentation techniques. Study was carried out by dividing three groups. First and second group include part of level-II (medium) categories and third uses group level-III (large) classification category defined in land cover map. In the first group, the results using all 7 classes showed 86.6 % of classification accuracy The other two groups, which include level-II class, showed 71 % of classification accuracy. Based on the results of the study, the deep learning-based research for generating automatic level-III classification was presented.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate hydrological impact by the land cover change of typhoon damage. For the typhoon RUSA (rainfall 1,402 mm) occurred in 2002 (August $31\;{\sim}$ September 1), satellite images of Landsat 7 ETM+ of September 29, 2000 and Landsat 5 TM of September 11, 2002 were selected, and each land cover was classified for Namdae-cheon watershed $192.7km^2$ located in the middle-eastern part of Korea Peninsula. SCS unit hydrograph for watershed runoff and Muskingum for streamflow routing of WMS HEC-1 was adopted. 30m resolution DEM & hydrological soil group using 1:50,000 soil map were prepared. The model was calibrated using three available data of storm events of 1985 to 1988 based on 1985 land cover condition. To predict the streamflow change by damaged land cover condition, rainfall of 50 years to 500 years frequency were generated using 2nd quantile of Huff method. The damaged land cover condition treated as bare soil surface increased streamflow of $50.1\;m^3/sec$ for 50 years rainfall frequency and $67.6\;m^3/sec$ for 500 years rainfall frequency based on AMC-I condition. There may be some speedy treatment by the government for the next coming typhoon damage.
