This paper presents a method and procedure for stress analysis and sizing in development of structures of a large composite wind turbine blade. Structural requirement of IEC standard was reviewed to set up appropriate analysis method and procedure. Several structural layouts were examined in a viewpoint of a large scale wind turbine blade. For the critical load cases, stress analysis were performed using finite element method. Stacking sequence and thickness of a laminate for each part and location were determined considering stress levels and producibility. Nonlinear geometric analysis was performed to check stability problem due to local buckling of a skin structures.
This work ethibits how susceptive the shear ultrasonic waves are to a little misoriented plies according to the angle variation of shear ultrasoic waves $0^\circ$ , $45^\circ$ and $90^\circ$. Also, it is shown that shear waves, particularly the transmission mode with the transmitter and receiver perpendicular to each other, have high sensitivity for detecting anomalies in fiber orientation and ply layup sequence that may occur in the manufacturing of composite laminates. Experimental results are agreed with modeling solutions which were based on decomposition of shear wave polarization vector as it propagates through the composite laminates. This wave appeared considerably to be sensitive to CFRP composites to the thickness direction along in-plane fibers.

Buckling optimization of laminated composite plates is significant as they fail because of buckling under in-plane compressive loading. The plate is usually modeled without cutout so that the buckling strength is found analytically using classical laminate plate theory (CLPT). However in real world applications, the composite plates are modeled with cutouts for getting them assembled and to offer the provisions like windows, doors and control system. Finite element analysis (FEA) is used to analyze the buckling strength of the plate with cutouts and it leads to high computational cost when the plate is optimized. In this article, a genetic algorithm based optimization technique is used to optimize the composite plate with cutout. The computational time is highly reduced by replacing FEA with artificial neural network (ANN). The effectiveness of the proposed method is explored with two numerical examples.

We performed a free vibration analysis of skew composite laminates with or without cutout based on the high-order shear deformation plate theory (HSDT). The effects of skew angles and ply orientations on the natural frequencies for various boundary conditions are studied using a nonlinear high-order finite element program developed for this study. The numerical results are in good agreement with those reported by other investigators for simple test cases, and the new results reported in this paper show the interactions between the skew angle, layup sequence and cutout size on the free vibration of the laminate. The findings highlight the importance of skew angles when analyzing laminated composite skew plates with cutout or without cutout.
The laminated sequence and thickness of a composite structure is an important design parameter which affect the strength and impact damage. In this study, it was investigated the residual strength of carbon fiber laminate after impact damage by the experimental investigation. The tensile strength test and compressive strength test were used to find the mechanical properties, previously. Impact test was performed using low-velocity drop-weight test equipment. The impact damages were finally assessed by the compressive strength test. The investigation results revealed the residual strength of the damaged specimens due to the impact damage.
The most of the design engineers for construction has academic background of bachelors degree. Theories for advanced composite structures are too difficult for such engineers and some simple but accurate enough methods are necessary. The senior author has reported that some laminate orientations have decreasing values of $D_{16}$, $B_{16}$, $D_{26}$ and $B_{26}$ stiffnesses as the ply number increases. Such plates behave as special orthotropic plates and simple formulas developed by the author can be used. Most of the bridge and building slabs on girders have large aspect ratios. For such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms($M_x$) on the relevant partial differential equations of equilibrium. In this paper, the result of the study on the subject problem is presented.
The lateral buckling of a laminated composite beam is studied. A general analytical model applicable to the lateral buckling of a composite beam subjected to various types of loadings is derived. This model is based on the classical lamination theory, and accounts for the material coupling for arbitrary laminate stacking sequence configuration and various boundary conditions. The effects of the location of applied loading on the buckling capacity are also included in the analysis. A displace-based one-dimensional finite element model is developed to predict critical loads and corresponding buckling modes for a thin-walled composite beam with arbitrary boundary conditions. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composites under central point load, uniformly distributed load, and pure bending with angle-ply and laminates. The effects of fiber orientation location of applied load, and types of loads on the critical buckling loads are parametrically studied.
Recently as flat display panels are getting narrower, TV wall mounts also become slimmer for interior design issue. In this study CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) was used for TV wall mount to satisfy slim arm design along with enough strength and low weight. The 16 staking sequences was made with orthogonal array to reduce experimental cases. Strength analysis of the TV wall mount arm made of CFRP laminate was studied on condition of staking sequences using FEA(Finite Element Analysis) and stiffness and strength of those cases were evaluated using deflection and Tsai-Wu's Failure criterion. The result showed that [$-45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}$] lay up case was suitable for the wall mount arm staking design from the criteria of deflection and Tsai-Wu's Failure Index.
Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) columns are increasingly being used in various engineering fields due to its high strength to weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Being a thin-walled structure, their designs are often governed by buckling.Buckling strength depends on state of stress of elements which is greatly influence by stacking sequence and various inaccuracies such as geometric imperfections and imperfections due to eccentricity of compressive load and non-uniform boundary conditions. In the present work, influence of load eccentricity on buckling strength of FRP column has been investigated by conducting parametric study. Numerical analyses were carried out by using finite element software ABAQUS. The finite element (FE) model was validated using experimental results from the literature, which demonstrated good agreement in terms of failure loads and deformed shapes. The influence of load eccentricity on buckling behavior is discussed with the help of developed graphs.
