Orientation Prediction of Lamella Structure of High Carbon steel in Wire Drawing (신선가공시 고탄소강 선재 층상구조의 정렬 예측)

  • The objective of this study was presented with a prediction on the alignment of cementite in pearlite lamella structure of high carbon steel by means of finite-element method(FEM) simulation. Pearlite strcuture was characterized by its nano-sized microstructure feature of alternation ferrite and cementite. FEM simulations were performed based on a suitable FE model describing the boundary conditions and the material behavior. With the alignment of lamella structure in high carbon pearlite steel wire, material plastic behavior was taken into account on plastic deformation and alignment of cementite. The effects of many important parameters(reduction in area, semi-die angle, initial angle of cementite ) on wire drawing process were predicted by DEFORM-2D. As the results, the possibility of wire fracture could be considerably reduced and the productivity of final product could be more increased than before.

A review on the softening of the fermented vegetables and the fruits (침채류와 과실의 연화현상에 관한 고찰)

  • The softening of the femented vegetables and the fruits was resulted from the degradation of pectin substances, cellulose, hemicellulose by polygalacturonase(PG), pectinesterase(PE), Cx-cellulase, $\beta$-galctosidase. The conversion of insoluble pectin to soluble pectin in cell wall-middle lamella was a major factor in the changes of firmness. Ca2+ was substantially increased firmness. However, Ca2+ could be removed from cell wall by chelating agents such as oxalic acid and citric acid. And Ca2+ was replaced with Na+ by ion exchange reaction. Ca2+ deficient tissue was vulnerable to attack by PG. Preheating treatment and Ca2+ addition is most effective in inhibiting the vegetable food softening and in increasing middle lamella-cell wall regidity, which PE activation by preheating treatment and Ca2+ addition could created more anionic carboxyl groups for cationic materials binding such as Ca2+ and chitosan and for polypectategel formation. Excessive demethylation by PE was associated with loosening of middle lamella cell wall components and softening.

  • Single layer latticed domes which have a mechanics property, a functional property, a aesthetic property and so on, occupies one part of long span space structures and after this, the using parts will be extended. The frame network pattern of single-layer latticed domes can be infinitely taken into account. The typical network patterns are triangular, square, hexagon, lamella and rib etc. It would take long time and cost too much to erect large roof structures with traditional erection techniques due to require of large number of temporary bracing and supports. The erection of large roof structures requires special techniques. As one of these special techniques is the Step-Up election method that utilizes jack-up supports and this will extremely saves time and cost to erect large roof structures. The objective of this study is to analysis the buckling characteristics of single-layer lamella domes according to the support number and position. From the result of this study, we obtained the fundamental data for the structural engineers who design the temporary support of large roof structures.

Structural Changes in Isothermal Crystallization Processes of Synthetic Polymers Studied by Time-Resolved Measurements of Synchrotron-Sourced X-Ray Scatterings and Vibrational Spectra

  • The structural changes occurring in the isothermal crystallization processes of polyethylene (PE), poly-oxymethylene (POM), and vinylidene fluoridetrifluoroethylene (VDFTrFE) copolymer have been reviewed on the basis of our recent experimental data collected by the time-resolved measurements of synchrotron-sourced wide-angle (WAXS) and small-angle X-ray scatterings (SAXS) and infrared spectra. The temperature jump from the melt to a crystallization temperature could be measured at a cooling rate of 600-1,000 $^{\circ}C$/min, during which we collected the WAXS, SAXS, and infrared spectral data successfully at time intervals of ca. 10 sec. In the case of PE, the infrared spectral data clarified the generation of chain segments of partially disordered trans conformations immediately after the jump. These segments then became transformed into more-regular all-trans-zigzag forms, followed by the formation of an orthorhombic crystal lattice. At this stage, the generation of a stacked lamella structure having an 800-${\AA}$-long period was detected in the SAXS data. This structure was found to transfer successively to a more densely packed lamella structure having a 400-${\AA}$-long period as a result of the secondary crystallization of the amorphous region in-between the original lamellae. As for POM, the formation process of a stacked lamella structure was essentially the same as that mentioned above for PE, as evidenced from the analysis of SAXS and WAXS data. The observation of morphology-sensitive infrared bands revealed the evolution of fully extended helical chains after the generation of lamella having folded chain structures. We speculate that these extended chains exist as taut tie chains passing continuously through the neighboring lamellae. In the isothermal crystallization of VDFTrFE copolymer from the melt, a paraelectric high-temperature phase was detected at first and then it transferred into the ferroelectric low-temperature phase at a later stage. By analyzing the reflection profile of the WAXS data, the structural ordering in the high-temperature phase and the ferroelectric phase transition to the low-temperature phase of the multi-domain structure were traced successfully.

  • Use of the ultra thick plate is being continuously increased in large off-shore structures, ships, bridges and skyscraper construction, due to increasingly large-sized steel structures and it seems that this trend will be maintained. But, occurrence of the lamella tearing has been reported in ultra thick plate used for construction. It is reportedly caused by impurities such S(sulfur), P(phosphorus) and others accumulated in the ultra thick plate's centerline in the thickness direction with strip shape or by restraint residual stress caused by the welding. In the ultra thick plate made by continuous casting method, occurrence of lamination is difficult to avoid because of the properties of production procedure. Therefore, with a view to reducing the lamella properties, this report tries tearing in the steel structure in the view of welding strength rather than metallic properties, this report tries to seek the optimum groove and welding procedure by using the computer simulation based on FEM(Finite Element Method).

  • One phase liquid crystal formula was developed by using of nonionic surfactants, polyols, water and oils and its physical property was investigated. At the system oft to 1 ratio of POE octyldodecyl ether series, which have Y type (branch type) hydrophobic group, and POE glyceryl monostearate series, Y type hydrophilic group, it was examined that the formula at 7:3, 6:4, and 5:5 ratio of nonionic surfactant : polyols, shows L$\alpha$ , a pattern which is a typical characteristic of liquid crystal structure under the cross microscope polarized film. As results of L$\alpha$ phase diagram study, the formula which had high hydrophilic nonionic surfactant and the 7:3 ratio of nonionic surfactant : polyol appeared to increase the amount of oil containment and to be capable of the lamella formation. Besides it was examined that lamellar liquid crystal formula could contain about 25-40% water between lamella layers and it was transformed into w/o emulsion following as water content increased. When the lamella gel was applied into a human skin, it was investigated that it had effectiveness in increasing transepidermal water content of the skin.

Topology and geometry optimization of different types of domes using ECBO

  • Domes are architectural and elegant structures which cover a vast area with no interrupting columns in the middle, and with suitable shapes can be also economical. Domes are built in a wide variety of forms and specialized terms are available to describe them. According to their form, domes are given special names such as network, lamella, Schwedler, ribbed, and geodesic domes. In this paper, an optimum topology design algorithm is performed using the enhanced colliding bodies optimization (ECBO) method. The network, lamella, ribbed and Schwedler domes are studied to determine the optimum number of rings, the optimum height of crown and tubular sections of these domes. The minimum volume of each dome is taken as the objective function. A simple procedure is defined to determine the dome structures configurations. This procedure includes calculating the joint coordinates and element constructions. The design constraints are implemented according to the provision of LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistance Factor Design-American Institute of Steel Constitution). The wind loading act on domes according to ASCE 7-05 (American Society of Civil Engineers). This paper will explore the efficiency of various type of domes and compare them at the first stage to investigate the performance of these domes under different kind of loading. At the second stage the wind load on optimum design of domes are investigated for Schwedler dome. Optimization process is performed via ECBO algorithm to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the ECBO in creating optimal design for domes.

Microstructure of Lupin Seed;a Comparative Study With Soybean (루핀콩과 대두의 미세구조에 관한 비교 연구)

  • The structure of the seed of Lupinue angustifolius was studied in order to investigate the Food quality of lupin seed in comparision with soybean. The cotyledonary cells of lupinseed was in egg-like shape and much (more than 4 times) larger than those of soybean. The microstructure of cotyledonary cells of lupinseed was characterized with thick cell wall having distinct pit-pairs. The protein bodies in lupinseed cotyledon cell contained numerous crystaloids, which was absent in soybean. The middle lamella of soybean cell was partially disintegrated by excessive heat treatment ($120^{\circ}C$, 20 min), whereas those of lupinseed did not change much by heting at $120^{\circ}C$ for 130 min.

  • This study was investigated to the structure of cell wall during maturation for the research of softening of jujube fruits. Cell was hardly combined with each other untill turning stage, but middle lamella of cell wall was splited at mature stage and was observed splited cell. The middle lamella of cell wall was not observed at green mature stage, but was observed at turning stage. Cell wall was degraded at mature stage. It was observed mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum et. at in jujube fruit of green mature stage, but cytoplasm and organelle was attached on cell wall as vacuole was grown up after turning stage.

A Study on Microstructures and Chemistry of Anorthoclase Using Electron Microscopy (전자현미경을 이용한 Anorthoclase의 미세구조 및 화학 연구)

  • Microstructures and chemistry of anorthoclase, a high-temperature phase of alkali feldspars, were studied using EPMA and TEM. BSE images of anorthoclase displayed mixtures of Na-rich areas and K-rich areas forming lamella of various sizes. EPMA analysis indicated that the Na-rich area is composed of Ab: 81%, Or: 3% and An: 11% in average, while the K-rich area is composed of Ab: 45%, Or: 44% and An: 11 % in average. TEM analysis revealed albite with Albite twins in the Na-rich area, contrasting to mixtures of albite with fine Albite twins and orthoclase without twins, forming regular lamella of about 100 nm sizes, in the K-rich area. The [001] electron diffraction pattern of the K-rich area also indicated coexistence of the two phases. While streaking parallel to the (010)$^{*}$ direction appeared only in albite due to the twin structure, streaking parallel to the $(100)^{ *}$ direction appeared both in albite and orthoclase, probably due to strain on the interface as well as order-disorder phenomena of Al and Si. It is suggested that the reverse orientation of albite and orthoclase is caused by pole switching to reduce strain on their interfaces. Based on these observations and analyses, the mineral studied is identified as lower-temperature cryptoperthite rather than high-temperature anorthoclase, which has a midium degree of Al-Si ordering and $400^{\circ}C$$600^{\circ}C$ of estimated temperatures for the microstructure formation.
