  • A new earth pressure equation acting on the vertical shafts in cohesionless soils has been proposed by modifying the equations proposed by others. In order to verify the modified equation, model tests which can control uniform wall displacement with depth to radial direction were conducted. Model tests were performed with three different wall friction angles and two different relative densities. The measured values were larger than estimated values when assuming $\lambda=1$ ; smaller than those when assuming $\lambda=1-sin\phi$. The parameter, $\lambda$ is the ratio of tangential stress to vertical stress and is the most critical value in proposed equation. A method which can estimate the earth pressure on vertical shafts in layered soils is also proposed by reasonably assuming the failure surface of layered soils and using the modified equation. In order to verify the proposed method, in-situ measurement data have been collected from the three in-situ vertical shafts installed in layered soils. Most of earth pressures converted from measured data match reasonably well with estimated values using proposed method.

  • A simple and efficient Lambda logic (${\lambda}-logic$) based algorithm is proposed for the solution of the generator constrained economic dispatch problem when the generating units having prohibited zones. The proposed method solves the economic dispatch (ED) problem that takes into account ramprate limits, transmission losses and prohibited operating zones in the power system operation. The proposed method uses a simple heuristic rule based on average power of prohibited operating zones which produces the feasibility of solution for the restricted operating units. The effectiveness of the algorithm is tested on five different test systems and the performance compared with other relevant methods reported in the literature. In all the cases, the proposed algorithm performs better than the previous existing algorithms with a less computational burden.

  • Best generation mix belongs to a multi attribute decision making, because we should consider many uncertain factors and choose the best one of the alternatives. Sugeno's fuzzy integral has been used as the solution of multi attribute decision making, but the exact value of the coefficient $\lambda$ hat not known yet which is needed to calculate fuzzy measure. This paper proposes the new method to calculate fuzzy measure without fixing the value of $\lambda$. The proposed method considers $\lambda$ as a probability distribution function and calculated expectation of fuzzy measure. The method is applied to the test system and the validity of the method is verified.

  • Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) based precise positioning using Real Time Kinematic (RTK) technique has been proposed as an enabler of the formation operation of moving vehicles. In RTK methods, the integer ambiguity of GNSS carrier phase measurements must be resolved. Although there have been many proposed algorithms for the integer ambiguity resolution, the widelane combination of carrier phase measurements and LAMBDA methods have gained the most popularity in literatures when dual frequency GNSS measurements were used. In this paper, we evaluated five alternative methods to determine relative positions of moving base and rover receivers; the round-off scheme of widelane carrier phase, instant least-squares and Kalman filter-based LAMBDA with widelane carrier phase, instant least-squares and Kalman filter-based LAMBDA with dual frequency measurements. The paper presented the performance of each method using flight test data, which showed their strength and weakness in the aspects of time-to-first-fix, ambiguity resolution success ratio, and relative position errors. Based on that, we provided practical recommendations of RTK operations for moving vehicles.

  • We propose the Fizeau-type phase shifting interferometer(FPSI) system for the performance test of high-order aspheric lenses. The proposed system is divided into two parts : optical part and signal processing part. Those two parts are operated by a program for hardware control. We also developed an analysis program adopting the phase shifting algorithm to analyze the obtained interferograms. We can confirm that the proposed system is efficient and adequate by direct comparison with the standard criterion in Mark IV interferometric system of Zygo. The peak-to-valley and RMS values of surface errors which are used to characterize high-order aspheric lenses are 0.845 wave and 0.1871 wave, respectively. The measurement errors between the proposed system and Mark IV are less than ${\lambda}/100$ and the repeatability is also calculated at less than ${\lambda}/100$.

  • This paper examines and estimates GARCH-VaR models (RiskMetrics, GARCH, IGARCH, GJR and APARCH) with three different distributions such as Gaussian normal, Student-t, Skewness Student-t Distribution using the daily price data from Korean Stock Market during Jan. 1, 1980-Sept. 30, 2004. It also compares them. In-sample test, this finds that for all confidence level as $90%{\sim}99.9%$, the performance and accuracy of IGARCH with ${\lambda}=0.87$ and skewness Student-t distribution are superior to other models and distributions in long position, but GARCH and GJR with Skewness Student-t distribution in short position. For above 99% confidence level, the performance and accuracy of IGARCH with ${\lambda}=0.87$ in both long and short positions are superior to other models and distributions, but Skewness Student-t distribution for long position and Student-t distribution for short position are more accuracy and superior to other distributions. In-out-of sample test, these results also confirm the evidences that the above findings are consistent as well.

  • The International Myeloma Working Group considers the serum free light chain (SFLC) assay to be an adjunct to traditional tests. Apart from the FLC ratio, the absolute values of individual free light chains also are gaining importance as they appear to be more relevant in certain clinical settings. Automated assays are available for their determination. As laboratories put new test systems into use catering to different disease populations, they are required by accreditation and certification bodies to verify or establish performance specifications, including reference intervals (RIs) representative of their population. Our aim was to establish local RIs for SFLC in a multicentre representative healthy population using a robust method. There was no significant relationship between SFLC levels and age, gender and creatinine levels. The 95% RI for ${\kappa}SFLC$ was 4.81 to 33.86mg/L, for ${\lambda}$ SFLC was 5.19 to 23.67mg/L and for ${\kappa}/{\lambda}SFLC$ was 0.36 to 2.33, significantly higher than the values given by the manufacturer. The ${\kappa}/{\lambda}$ SFLC ratio at 2.23, covering 100% of the data, showed 72% sensitivity (95% CI=39.0 - 94.0), 100% specificity (95% CI=71.5 - 100.0), 100% PPV (95% CI=21.5 - 100.0), 95% NPV (95% CI=75.4 - 99.9), and 79% accuracy (95% CI=56.0 - 93.0). In the patient group, kit RI for ${\kappa}/{\lambda}$ SFLC ratio classified 45.5% (n=5) as positive vs 9.1% (n=1) positive by the study RI, while the kit RI for kappa FLC classified 90.9% (n=10) as positive vs 54.5% (n=6), indicating increased probability of false positive test results with the kit RI when applied to our patient population. Appropriate and specific reference intervals and criteria values result in fewer false-positive and false-negative results which means fewer wrong or missed diagnoses.

  • The heavy ion accelerator that will be built in Daejeon utilizes four types of superconducting cavities. Cryomodules holding the superconducting cavities in them supply thermal insulation for cavities operating in 4.3 K or 2.1 K. A Prototype of cryomodule which holds two HWR (Half Wave Resonator) cavities was fabricated and tested. Since the operating temperature of the HWR is 2.1 K, the superfluid helium was generated with warm vacuum pumping system. The cyromodule was successfully cooled down below lambda point temperature of helium and any detectable leak was not observed during the test. The static thermal load at 4.2 K was measured. The result and the experience for the cool-down below lambda point of helium are reported in this paper.

  • The purpose of test fixture is to mechanically couple energy from a shaker into a test specimen. And then it is necessary to design a fixture of shich the fundamental natural frequency is over than one half times as high as the highest frequency of interest. But the dynamic behavior of vibration test fixture is usually different from, often far different from, what has been calculated. In this paper, the optimal dimensionless frequency parameter, ${lambda}$'s, are calculated from the test results of a various and complex shaped fixtures.

  • Malondialdehyde (MDA), used as an oxidative stress marker, is commonly assayed by measuring the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) using HPLC, as an indicator of the MDA concentration. Since the HPLC method, though highly specific, is time-consuming and expensive, usually it is not suitable for the rapid test in large-scale environmental epidemiologic surveys. The purpose of this study is to develop a simple and rapid method for estimating TBARS levels by using a multiple regression equation that includes TBARS levels measured with a microplate reader as an independent variable. Twelve hour urine samples were obtained from 715 subjects. The concentration of TBARS was measured at three different wavelengths (fluorescence: ${\lambda}-_{ex}$ 530 nm and ${\lambda}-_{em}$ 550 nm; ${\lambda}-_{ex}$ 515 nm and ${\lambda}-_{em}$ 553 nm; and absorbance: 532 nm) using microplate reader as well as HPLC. 500 samples were used to develop a regression equation, and the remaining 215 samples were used to evaluate the validity of the regression analysis. The induced multiple regression equation is as follows: TBARS level (${\mu}M$) = -0.282 + 1.830 ${\times}$ (TBARS level measured with a microplate reader at the fluorescence wavelengths ${\lambda}-_{ex}$ 530 nm and ${\lambda}-_{em}$ 550 nm, ${\mu}M$) -0.685 ${\times}$ (TBARS level measured with a microplate reader at the fluorescence wavelengths ${\lambda}-_{ex}$ 515 nm and ${\lambda}-_{em}$ 553 nm, ${\mu}M$) + 0.035 ${\times}$ (TBARS level measured with a microplate reader at the absorbance wavelength 532 nm, ${\mu}M$). The estimated TBARS levels showed a better correlation with, and are closer to, the corresponding TBARS levels measured by HPLC compared to the values obtained by the microplate method. The TBARS estimation method reported here is simple and rapid, and that is generally in concordance with HPLC measurements. This method might be a useful tool for monitoring of urinary TBARS level in environmental epidemiologic surveys with large sample sizes.
