The PMT test results are compared with other in situ test such as Standard Penetration Test (SPT), Cone Penetration Test (CPT), Field Vane Test (FVT) and the laboratory test in order to investigate the correlationships for the strength parameters obtained from Busan and Incheon areas. Many proposed correlation formulas also make a comparative study and new correlation formulas for domestic soils are introduced. Limit pressure ( $P_1$) could be determined by P-log($\Delta$V/V) and Relative volume Method. PMT for the granular soils showed relatively high correlation with SPT, while CPT has good correlation with PMT for cohesive soil. The predicted undrained shear test ( $S_{u}$) by the PMT test results for Incheon and Busan samples showed low correlativity with proposed equations, therefore, new correlation formulas are proposed for domestic soils.s.
This paper is a study on the improvement effects by quick lime pile through theoretical analysis and in-situ construction test. Effects of strength increase is studied to verify the improvement effects of soft ground arounding quick lime pile. First, engineering characteristics of quick lime and ground was studied, in the second place, laboratory test(consolidation test, triaxial compression test) and in-situ test(portable cone penetration test, vane test) were peformed for verification of strength increase of adjacent ground. Finally, the results of in-situ test were compared with those of theorecal study. From in-situ test results, strength at 28th curing days(6.11-6.55t/㎡) was twice as great as strength before improvement(3.06t/㎡) and was slightly greater than theoretical value(4.95t/㎡).

This paper reports the application of field tests to weak ground. In this study, field and laboratory tests were performed in the west seashore of KOREA(Ildo, Sore, Kunsan, Youngam). Applied tests are standard penetration test, cone penetration test, dilatometer test, field vane test, unconsolidated undrained test, oedometer test and other fundametal material properties tests. The results of in-situ test are used to estimate soil types and undrained shear strengths of five clay local deposits. SPT results showed low reliability and FVT war also demonstrated the best field test to weak clayey deposits.
Estimation of undrained shear strength $(S_u)$ of clayey soils from piezocone penetration test (CPTu), which has widely been known as one of very promising in situ test methods, requires piezocone factors. Empirical correlations are generally utilized to derive piezocone factors, but previous studies on the empirical piezocone factors are site-specific and in some cases need engineering characteristics, which should be obtained from additional laboratory tests. In this study, empirical cone factors were evaluated by comparing 6 CPTu results at Shihwa region in Korea with reference $S_u$ values obtained from field vane test (FVT). From previous CPTu results of other regions in Korea as well as the results herein, the correlations between piezocone factor, $N_{kT}$ and CPTu results were investigated and three simplified evaluation methods of $S_u$ using only CPTu results were presented. The $S_u$ values estimated by $(q_T-{\sigma}_v)/{\sigma}'_v$ method shows better matches with those obtained from laboratory tests for marine clays at Shihwa region.

When highly compressible, clayey soil layers lies at a limited depth and large consolidtion settlements are expected as the result of construction, precompression of soil may be used to minimize postconstruction settlement. In this study, we tried to find the possibility about the effect of ground improvement using flat dilatometer at the Inchon International Airport where preloading was installed. Field and laboratory tests were performed for soft ground before and after preloading in order to check the effectiveness of the soft ground improvement and compared with the test results of dilatometer which obtained before and after preloading at the same location Field tests such as flat dilatometer, vane, CPTu tests were performed before and after preloading and undisturbed samples are obtained to carry out laboratory tests. As comparing results, after preloading, unit weight, effective stress, undrained shear strength were increased and we can also check the decrease of consolidation late caused of decrease of void ratio. Furthermore, it is assumed that the possibility on the effect of ground improvement by using the flat dilatometer
The rate of softening is an important factor to determine whether the failure occurs along localized shear band or in a more diffused manner. In this paper, strength loss and softening rate effect depending on sensitivity are investigated for weakly cemented clays, for both artificially cemented high plasticity San Francisco Bay Mud and low plasticity Yolo Loam. Destructuration and softening behavior for weakly cemented sensitive clays are demonstrated and discussed through multiple vane shear tests. Artificial sensitive clays are prepared in the laboratory for physical modeling or constitutive modeling using a small amount of cement (2 to 5%) with controlled initial water content and curing period. Through test results, shear band thickness is theoretically computed and the rate of softening is represented as a newly introduced parameter, ${\omega}_{80%}$. Consequently, it is found that the softening rate increases with sensitivity for weakly cemented sensitive clays. Increased softening rate represents faster strength loss to residual state and faster minimizing of shear band thickness. Uncemented clay has very low softening rate to 80% strength drop. Also, it is found that higher brittleness index ($I_b$) relatively shows faster softening rate. The result would be beneficial to study of physical modeling for sensitive clays in that artificially constructed high sensitivity (up to $S_t=23$) clay exhibits faster strain softening, which results in localized shear band failure once it is remolded.

Rail road slope can be fatted because of existence of unexpected soft subsoil. Purpose of this study is verifying the cause of rail road slope failure and determination of soil strength for remedy. Drilling some boreholes, cone penetration test and field vane test were executed in order to find out the cause of slope failure. In addition, laboratory test was conducted in order to determine soil strength of soft soil sampled as undisturbed state. As a result of both the in-situ and the laboratory tests, the cause of slope failure is thought to be propagation of failure zone by progressive rupture of overconsolidated clay Soft soil strength was determined through back analysis of the failed slope.

The flow upstream of a centrifugal pump impeller has been investigated by both experimental test and numerical simulation. For experimental study, the flow field at four sections in the pump suction is measured by using PIV method. For calculation, the three dimensional turbulent flow for the full flow passage of the pump is simulated based on RANS equations combined with RNG k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. From those results, it is noted that at both design lo ad and quarter load condition, the pre-swirl flow whose direction is the same as the impeller rotation exists at all four sections in suction pipe of the pump, and at each section, the pre-swirl velocity becomes obviously larger at higher rotational speed. It is also indicated that at quarter load condition, the low pressure region at suction surface of the vane is large because of the unfavorable flow upstream of the pump impeller.

N-value is usually used to assume the displacement depth of embankment on the soft marine clay. But N-value of the soft marine clay tend to underestimate unlike overestimating of general cases. In general case, if the length of rod is more long then N-value is more large because it is under the influence of energy loss of hammer blow. So it is reasonable to correct N-value down. But in the case of soft marine clay, N-value must not be correct down. Especially to assume the displacement depth of embankment on the soft marine clay, it must be used laboratory test results or CPT, Vane Test than N-value. In this study, it is compared with two field cases that design displacement method of embankment.
This research is results of experimental and numerical works on characteristic of strength increase and bearing capacity in dredged and reclaimed soil due to desiccation shrinkage. For a soil sampled from southern coastal area in Korea, basic soil property tests and standard consolidation test with falling head permeability tests were carried out to obtain consolidational characteristics of soil. Double cone penetration test, laboratory vane test and unconfined compression test were also performed to investigate the change of shear strength with degree of desiccation. Model tests were performed in 1G environment and 30G level artificially accelerated condition by using the centrifuge model test facilities to investigate the bearing capacity of desiccated ground. Test results were analyzed by using the theoretical and load-settlement characteristics method proposed by Meyehof & Hanna(1978). On the other hands, the numerical technique, using the finite strain consolidation theory considering the effect of desiccation was used to estimate the appropriate time of using heavy construction equipments in field with respect to strength increase due to desiccation.
