  • The small PWR has been paid more and more attention due to its diversity of application and flexibility in the site selection. However, the large core power density, the small containment space and the rapid accident progress characteristics make it difficult to control the containment pressure like the traditional PWR during the LOCA. The pressure suppression system has been used by the BWR since the early design, which is a suitable technique that can be applied to the small PWR. Since the configuration and operating conditions are different from the BWR, the pressure suppression system should be redesigned for the small PWR. Conducting the experiments on the scale down test facility is a good choice to reproduce the prototypical phenomena in the test facility, which is both economical and reasonable. A systematic scaling method referring to the H2TS method was proposed to determine the geometrical and thermohydraulic parameters of the pressure suppression containment response test facility for the small PWR conceptual design. The containment and the pressure suppression system related thermohydraulic phenomena were analyzed with top-down and bottom-up scaling methods. A set of the scaling criteria were obtained, through which the main parameters of the test facility can be determined.

  • A series of forced oscillation test on model mooring chain was carried out to investigate dynamic tension characteristics. The model test was conducted at two different water depth to gather basic data for 'truncated mooring test' and 'hybrid mooring test'. The truncated and hybrid mooring test are highly recommended to overcome the limitation of water depth in model test recently. The resultant tension RAO gives good possibility of approximation of dynamic tension by equivalent weight adjustment for the ratio of water depth in different water depth. Because the hybrid mooring test is the adequate combination of model test and simulation, accurate simulation model on mooring system is essential. The simulation results show good agreement with model test results.

  • In this report, we present newly improved optical design for the Amon-Ra energy channel and its optical performance. The design is optimized parametrically with emphasis on improved light concentration. And then its performances are computed, first, from a laboratory test simulation using laser method (wave optics approach) and, second, from an in-orbit radiative transfer simulation using IRT method with 3D Earth model (geometrical optics approach). Two simulation test results show clear evidence of energy concentration improvement.

  • Since the crack generation and its propagation caused by welding defects is one of the main hull damage patterns, the simulation of crack propagation process has an important significance for ship safety. Based on interface element method, a finite element model to simulate crack propagation is studied in the paper. A Lennard-Jones type potential function is employed to define potential energy of the interface element. Tensile tests of steel flat plates with initial central crack are carried out. Surface energy density and spring critical stress that are suitable for the simulation of crack propagation are determined by comparing numerical calculation and tests results. Based on a large number of simulation results, the curve of simulation correction parameter plotted against the crack length is calculated.

  • High Damping Rubber bearings (HDR bearings) have been used in the seismic design of bridge structures widely in China. In earthquakes, structural natural periods will be extended, seismic energy will be dissipated by this kind of bearing. Previously, cyclic loading method was used mainly for test studies on mechanical properties of HDR bearings, which cannot simulate real seismic responses. In this paper, Real-Time Substructure (RTS) test study on mechanical properties of HDR bearings was conducted and it was found that the loading rate effect was not negligible. Then the influence of peak acceleration of ground motion was studied. At last test results were compared with a numerical simulation in the OpenSees software framework with the Kikuchi model. It is found that the Kikuchi model can simulate real mechanical properties of HDR bearings in earthquakes accurately.

  • This paper describes depth, heading and speed control of an underwater vehicle that has four stern thrusters of which forces are coupled in the diving and, steering motion, as well as the speed of the vehicle. The optimal linear quadratic controller is designed based on a linearized- state space model, developed by combining the dynamic equations of speed, steering and diving motion. The designed controller gives provides an optimal thrust distribution, minimizing the given performance index to control speed, depth and heading simultaneously. To validate the performance of the controller, a simulation and tank-test are carried out with DUSAUV (Dual Use Semi-Autonomous Underwater Vehicle), developed by KORDI as a test-bed for testing new underwater technologies. Optimal gains of the controller are tuned, using a computer simulation environment with a nonlinear 6-DOF numerical DUSAUV model, developed by PMM (Planner Motion Mechanism) test. To verify the performance of the presented controller in experiment, a tank-test with DUSAUV is carried out in the ocean engineering basin in KORDI. The experimental results are also compared with the simulation results to investigate the accordance of the numerical and the real mode.

  • This paper presents the neutronics modeling capabilities of the fast reactor simulation system SHARP, which ANL is developing as part of the U.S. DOE's NEAMS program. We discuss the three transport solvers (PN2ND, SN2ND, and MOCFE) implemented in the UNIC code along with the multigroup cross section generation code $MC^2$-3. We describe the solution methods and modeling capabilities, and discuss the improvement needs for each solver, focusing on massively parallel computation. We present the performance test results against various benchmark problems and ZPR-6 and ZPPR critical experiments. We also discuss weak and strong scalability results for the SN2ND solver on the ZPR-6 critical assembly benchmarks.

  • The damping effect of a Concrete-filled Rectangular Steel Tube (CRST) frame structure is studied in this paper. Viscous dampers are employed to insure the function of the building especially subjected to earthquakes, for some of the main vertical elements of the building are not continuous. The shaking table test of a 1:15 scale model was conducted under different earthquake excitations to recognize the seismic behavior of this building. And the vibration damping effect was also investigated by the shaking table test and the simulation analysis. The nonlinear time-history analysis of the shaking table test model was carried out by the finite element analysis program CANNY. The simulation model was constructed in accordance with the tested one and was analyzed under the same loading condition and the simulation effect was then validated by the tested results. Further more, the simulation analysis of the prototype structure was carried out by the same procedure. Both the simulated and tested results indicate that there are no obvious weak stories on the damping equipped structure, and the dampers can provide the probability of an irregular CRST frame structure to meet the requirements of the design code on energy dissipation and deformation limitation.

  • This research develops a GPS-based formation-flying testbed (FFTB) for formation navigation and control. The FFTB is a simulator in which spacecraft simulation and modeling software and loop test capabilities are integrated for test and evaluation of spacecraft navigation and formation control technologies. The FFTB is composed of a GPS measurement simulation computer, flight computer, environmental computer for providing true environment data and 3D visualization computer. The testbed can be simulated with one to two spacecraft, thus enabling a variety of navigation and control algorithms to be evaluated. In a formation flying simulation, GPS measurement are generated by a GPS measurement simulator to produce pseudorange, carrier phase measurements, which are collected and exchanged by the flight processors and subsequently processed in a navigation filter to generate relative and/or absolute state estimates. These state estimates are the fed into control algorithm, which are used to generate maneuvers required to maintain the formation. In this manner, the flight processor also serves as a test platform for candidate formation control algorithm. Such maneuvers are fed back through the controller and applied to the modeled truth trajectories to close simulation loop. Currently, The FFTB has a closed-loop capability of simulating a satellite navigation solution using software based GPS measurement, we move forward to improve using SPIRENT GPS RF signal simulator and space-based GPS receiver

  • This paper describes the simulation and experiment for partial discharge (PD) pulse propagation in 22.9kV CNCV power cables. To investigate the propagation characteristics of PD, experiments are carried out by injecting the PD pulse in 100m-long 60 $mm^2$ CNCV cable in the laboratory. The characteristics of PD are also simulated using EMTP to investigate and analyze PD in the same cable. By comparing the simulation and test results, parameter permittivity is recalculated by considering semiconducting screen in the process of simulation and analysis of PD. After it is proved that simulation results and test results are almost similar in the laboratory, extensive simulations are performed to analyse various PD characteristics such as propagation velocity, attenuation, etc. in 60 $mm^2$ and 325 $mm^2$ CNCV cables. Authors are confident that results obtained in this paper will be used as important technical materials to detect and investigate PD generated in transmission and distribution power cables.
