  • Consistent with a previous study on the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (BPH) (Seo et al., 2009), we identified seven distinct EPG waveforms (np, L1, L2, L3, L4-a, L4-b, and L5) in adult female Laodelphax striatellus (SBPH) that fed on rice plants, by using the direct current electrical penetration graph (DC-EPG) system. The shape of waveforms and the pattern of occurrence of each waveform of SBPH were very similar to those of BPH. L3 and L4-a always occurred prior to L4-b. Periodical honeydew excretion was observed in L4-b only. Microsection observation following laser stylectomy revealed that the tips of SBPH stylets severed in L3, L4-a, and L4-b were commonly located in or near the phloem region of rice plants, but were located in the xylem in L5. Plant sap flowed from the stylets severed in L4-b only, and its main carbohydrate component was detected as sucrose by HPLC analysis. These results and the patterns of EPG waveform progress in SBPH suggested that feeding activities on rice plant tissue were relevant to each EPG waveform. L1 and L2 corresponded to the initiation of stylet penetration and stylet movement with salivation on the outside of the vascular bundle. L3 and L4-a were related to feeding activities within the phloem region in preparation for phloem sap ingestion. L4-b was closely associated with phloem sap ingestion, and L5 corresponded to xylem feeding behavior.

  • In order to investigate the effect of inhibitors on L-threonine biosynthesis in Escherichia coli, we have constructed a metabolic network model of amino acid biosynthesis from L-aspartate to L-threonine by using available informations from literatures and databases. In the model, the effects of inhibitors on the biosynthesis of L-threonine was included as an appropriate mathematical form. For simulation study, we used initial values as L-aspartate 5 mM, ATP 5 mM, NADPH 2 mM, and observed the concentration changes of intermediate metabolites over concentration changes of respective inhibitors. As a result, we found that concentrations of intermediate metabolites were not significantly changed over concentration changes of L-lysine, L-methionine, and L-glutamate. But, there were considerable changes of intermediates over concentration changes of L-serine, L-cysteine, and L-threonine, which can be considered as essential effectors on L-threonine synthesis. Contrary, the synthesis of L-threonine seems to be not related to the amounts of L-aspartate, and inversely proportional to the accumulated amount of D,L-aspartic ${\beta}$-semialdehyde.

  • To provide the basic information for the water improvement and control of water resource in Nakdong river districts, the physico-chemical characteristics of water in four main streams and three branch streams of the river were investigated through 36 times totally, one time per each month from January in 1995 to November in 1997. The pH values of each sites in main or branch stream of Nakdong river was pH $6.3{\sim}9.3$ range, pH range of Jukpo and Namji area at spring and fall was almost over pH 8.5, which was exceeded the water quality standard for agriculture. DO values of Nakdong river was almost $8.0{\sim}13mg/l$, except for Kangchang area in downstream of Kumho river. BOD values in Dasa area where was prior to mixing of Kumho river was $1.5{\sim}4.8mg/l$, which was under the water quality standard for agriculture(8mg/l), but BOD values followed mixing of Kumho river was over the permit standard of agricultural water as $3.8{\sim}8.9mg/l$ in Koryung, $3.4{\sim}8.4mg/l$ in Jukpo and $3.3{\sim}7.8mg/l$ in Namji according to time or season. Especially, BOD values at Gangchang area in Kumho river were $7.6{\sim}18.5mg/l$, which was over the water quality standard for agriculture and so Kumho river was a main pollutant: source of Nakdong river. COD values of main stream of Nakdong river was over the permit standard of agriculture(8mg/l) as $5.2{\sim}13.5mg/l$ in Koryvng, $5.0{\sim}12.7mg/l$ in Jukpo and $5.0{\sim}12.2mg/l$ in Namji according to time or season. And COD values was much high rather than BOD values and its gap of concentration was increased along with downstream. $NH_4-N$ of main stream of Nakdong river followed mixing of Kumho river($0.5{\sim}13.1mg/l$) was the highest affected in Koryung($0.18{\sim}5.0mg/l$) and detected much more in winter than in summer. T-N in Koryung($4.96{\sim}12.06mg/l$) followed mixing of Kumho river was significantly high rather than $2.86{\sim}4.86mg/l$ in Dasa, $4.20{\sim}8.20mg/l$ in Jukpo and $3.18{\sim}8.64mg/l$ in Namji, which was almost over the permit standard of agricultural water(1.0mg/l). T-P in Koryung($0.10{\sim}0.58mg/l$) also was significantly high rather than those $0.07{\sim}0.36mg/l$ in Jukpo and $0.08{\sim}0.4mg/l$ in Namji as over the standard of agricultural water(0.1mg/l). The concentration of T-N or T-P in Nakdong districts was trended of increasing in every year.

  • Objective : Although the L5-S1 has distinct structural features in comparison with other lumbar spine segments, not much is known about adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) at the L5-S1 segment. The aim of study was to compare the incidence and character of ASD of the cephalad and L5-S1 segments after L5 floating lumbar fusion. Methods : From 2005 to 2010, 115 patients who underwent L5 floating lumber fusion were investigated. The mean follow-up period was 46.1 months. The incidence of radiological and clinical ASD of the cephalad and the L5-S1 segments was compared using survival analysis. Risk factors affecting ASD were analyzed using a log rank test and the Cox proportional hazard model. Results : Radiological ASD of the L5-S1 segment had a statistically significant higher survival rate than that of the cephalad segment (p=0.001). However, clinical ASD of the L5-S1 segment was significantly lower survival rates than that of the cephalad segment (p=0.038). Risk factor analysis showed that disc degeneration of the cephalad segment and preoperative spinal stenosis of the L5-S1 segment were risk factors. Conclusion : In L5 floating fusion, radiological ASD was more common in the cephalad segment and clinical ASD was more common in the L5-S1 segment. At the L5-S1 segment, the degree of spinal stenosis appears to be the most influential risk factor in ASD incidences, unlike the cephalad segment.

  • Effect of the antibiotic carbenicillin on callus and shoot formation from the leaf disc culture of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. BY-4) was examined. The number of shoot induced from the leaf explants was decreased as the amount of carbenicillin increased from 250 mg/L to 2,000 mg/L on MS medium containing 0.5 mg/L of BAP or kinetin. In addition, calli formation from the leaf explants was increased by the treatment of 250 mg/L ∼ 500 mg/L carbenicillin with or without 0.5 mg/L of 2,4-D or NAA. However, the fresh weight of 4-week-cultured explants was decreased with increasing carbenicillin from 250 mg/L to 2,000 mg/L on MS medium containing 0.5 mg/L of 2,4-D or NAA. These results indicate that carbenicillin has an auxin-like effect, such as promoting callus formation and inhibiting shoot induction. It leads to the conclusion that the auxin-like property should be taken into account for the production of transgenic plants via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation.

  • Radon concentration was measured in a total of 5,453 groundwater samples from wells across Korea. The radon concentrations showed the values ranging from 0.1 Bq/L to 7,218.7 Bq/L, with a median of 48.8 Bq/L which is lower than those of other countries having similar geological conditions. The distribution of radon concentrations was lognormal. The median value is high in the granite areas (63.5-105.1 Bq/L) while it is low in the sedimentary rocks and Cheju volcanic area (16.0-20.3 Bq/L). When grouping the groundwater with well depth, the median radon value is high in weathering and/or upper bedrock zone (61.4 Bq/L) while it is low in alluvium and/or weathering zone (28.5 Bq/L). About 17.7% of the total samples exceeded 148 Bq/L of USEPA guideline value. The exceeding radon ratio more than 148 Bq/L in groundwater is highest in Jurassic granite area, however, the exceeding radon rates more than 300 Bq/L and 500 Bq/L are highest in CGRA area.
