A xylanase was purified from a commercial crude xylanase, Pulpzyme HC, and used for the bleaching of kraft pulp in the absence or in the presence of nonionic surfactants, Tween 20, Tween 80, and Igepal C930. The purified xylanase has a molecular weight of 23,500 as determined by a reducing SDS-PAGE. Tween 20 was most effective to enhance the efficiency of the enzymatic bleaching of kraft pulp by xylanase.

The reinforcement of wheat straw pulp sheets with softwood kraft was studied, with special emphasis on the impact of softwood kraft beating and the proportion softwood kraft in straw pulp. the reinforcement was evaluated by measuring the tensile stiffness sand in-plane fracture behavior of samples. the results were compared with a mechanical pulp (TMP) and with a hardwood birch kraft, both reinforced with the same softwood kraft. Wheat straw pulp forms strong interfiber bonds. Therefore, its tensile stiffness and tensile strength are larger than TMP used. In-plane tear tests showed that a pure wheat straw pulp sheet has low fracture energy and correspondingly a narrow fracture process zone. The fracture energy of the reinforced straw sheets was found to increase linearly with the proportion of both unbeaten and beaten softwood pulps.

Yellow poplar grown in Korea and imported eucalyptus were compared their kraft pulping characteristics and evaluated the replacing possibility of eucalyptus by yellow poplar. Difference between yellow poplar and eucalyptus were investigated in chemical composition and fiber morphology. Yellow poplar kraft pulp resulted in the higher yield, longer fiber length and thicker fiber, and higher pulp strength than that of eucalyptus. More xylan survived in eucalyptus than yellow poplar during kraft pulping, which led to similar pulp yield even though polysaccharides in Eucalyptus was 4.5% less than in yellow poplar. Longer and thicker yellow poplar pulp fiber resulted in better beating response and pulp strength properties.

A mill trial was performed in a kraft paper mill in order to evaluate the possibility of utilizing dual polymer dry strength aids system consisting of cationic PVAm and anionic PAM. It was found that the cationic PVAm - anionic PAM dry strength additives can improve paper strength without significantly disturbing the stability of the kraft papermaking process when virgin UKP was used as a furnish. Tensile strength (25.3% in machine direction, 48.4% in cross machine direction), elongation of paper (31.6%, 15.6%) and tensile energy absorption (48%, 54%) were improved. Air permeability of the kraft paper was improved as well (22%). Tear strength was decreased with PVAm dry strength aids system, but it can be compensated with decreasing refining degree. In addition, the mill trial results indicate that highly air permeable kraft sack paper can be produced by the addition of PVAm dry strength agents at the stock with reduced freeness.
To know the effect of enzymatic pre-treatment on softwood Kraft pulp, two xylanse-encoding genes, named xynl and xynll were isolated from Thrichoderma ressei. Structural genes of xylanase (XYNI, XYNII) and cellulase (EGIV-CBDII) were isolated from T. ressei and Rumicoccus albus respectively, and expressed in E. coli. bacterial culture. The specific activity of purified recombinant XYNI is higher than XYNII. The brightness of XYNI treated softwood Kraft pulp increased to 29.9%. On further sequential treatment with EGIV-CBDII and XYNI the brightness of softwood Kraft pulp were improved to 9.1 and 73% respectively. As expected the Kappa number of softwood Kraft pulp also decreased 8.1, 4.6 and 3.2% respectively. Results further indicate that this sequential combination of enzyme treatment has synergic effect for improving bleaching of softwood Kraft pulp.

This study was carried out to explore optimum use of the products generated from the National Forest Management Operation (NFMO) as raw materials for kraft pulp. First of all, different wood species from NFMO were randomly mixed, and then they were used to make kraft pulp under the specified condition. All kraft pulps made from the mixed species displayed equal physical properties to those from foreign wood chips used in Moorim P&P Co. Ltd. For optical properties, most of the unbleached pulps had high brightness but the pulp made from wood species containing chestnut tree showed the lowest brightness due to its high kappa number. Finally, the products from NFMO had little negative effects on the properties of kraft pulps. This means that they could be used as complementary raw materials for kraft pulps with foreign wood chips.

This study was carried out to investigate pulping properties of the forest biomass arising from the national forest management operation. The forest biomass was collected and classified into many groups according to their species and age. After the chips were made from the forest biomass, the measurement of chip size and chemical analysis were performed. To make the pulps from the forest biomass, the kraft pulping was applied and thereafter the physical and optical properties of kraft pulps were measured. The pulp fibers from the forest biomass had the similar mean fiber length, but their properties became different according to wood species and ages. Differently from the other species, kraft pulps from chestnut wood had the highest kappa number. Acacia, paulownia and chestnut woods made kraft pulps with lower tensile strength and brightness than the others. It could be concluded that acacia, paulownia and chestnut woods must be screened out in order to make a good quality of kraft pulps while being collected during Forest Management Operation.

In this study, we investigated the physical properties of kraft pulps made from rice husk, peanut husk and garlic stems. These agricultural byproducts were collected individually, and then various pulps were manufactured from them by controlling active alkali, sulfidity, reaction time and the liquor ratio in the kraft pulping process in order to analyze the applicability of these agricultural byproducts as raw materials for kraft pulps. After kraft pulping, we measured yield, flake content, fiber length, fiber width and freeness of pulps, and the fiber shapes of the pulps were observed by using an optical microscope. When the higher active alkali, longer reaction time and lower liquor ratio were applied in kraft pulping process, reject content decreased and fiber yield increased. The pulp from garlic stems had the longest fiber length and that from rice husk showed the highest intial freeness. All of the pulps from agricultural byproducts showed higher initial freeness, shorter fiber length and the similar fiber width compared to OCC, BCTMP and hardwood BKP. The fibers of the pulps made from agricultural byproducts showed a similar shape to those of commercial pulps. It was concluded that these agricultural byproducts had a potential as raw materials to produce an alternative pulp to the commercial pulps.

In this study, new materials and shapes for a residential humidifying element were investigated. These elements could replace the current Japanese folded-type rayon/PE elements. Samples were taken from three different materials - rayon/PET (50:50), kraft/PET (40:60), kraft/PET/carbon. Results showed that the humidification efficiencies of the new samples were lower than those of the Japanese product. The efficiencies were 59% for the Japanese product (rayon/PET), 62% for kraft/PET and 84% for kraft/PET/carbon. This could be due to lower rayon or kraft content in the present samples than that in the Japanese product. However, pressure drops in the present samples were significantly lower than that in the Japanese product, due to improved channel configuration. The humidification capacity at the same pumping power ($j_m/f^{1/3}$) was 60% to 82% higher for the kraft/PET/carbon sample compared with the Japanese product. Furthermore, the results are compared with theoretical predictions.
A kraft black liquor obtained from pulping of pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb et Zucc) was used for producing three kinds of adhesive such as black liquor-phenol formaldehyde resin, methyloeated kraft lignin-phenol formaldehyde resin, and lignin cake-phenol resin. In case of producing black liquor-phenol formaldehyde resin, about 60 percent of the phenolic resin could be replaced by black liquor. Also the optimal press condition appeared to be $160^{\circ}C$ for 7 min. (l5.77Kg/$cm^2$ in dry test, 8.54Kg/$cm^2$ in 4 hr. boil test). Phenol could be substituted up to 80-90 percent by methylolated kraft lignin. The suitable conditions of factors affecting bond quality were pH to 2.6, methanol as solvent and 0.2ml formaldehyde per 1g of the adhesives, respectively. The optimal press condition was $150^{\circ}C$ for 4 min. (188.54Kg/$cm^2$ in dry test, 10.08Kg/$cm^2$ in 4 hr. boil test). In preparing lignin cake-phenol resin, a suitable mixing ratio of phenol to powered kraft lignin was one to one by weight. The optimal press condition was $150^{\circ}C$ for 4 min.(18.46Kg/$cm^2$ in dry test, 12.31Kg/$cm^2$ in 4 hr. hoil test).
