Under-utilization of Korean women's education in the labor market has been observed and pointed out as a waste of valuable human resources. Although education provides women with positive returns when they work, it has been found that Korean women's education is not much related to the likelihood of women's labor force participation. This tendency cannot be explained by micro-economic theory, which says that educated women are more likely to participate in the labor force. Thus, in this analysis, a macro-level explanation is attempted to understand Korean women's economic behaviors in relation to education. Korea's rapid industrialization since 1960 has provided ample job opportunities mostly for less educated women. On the other hand, increasing demand for educated female labor has been moderate. Various restriction against women, especially married women, have prevailed in the Korean labor market. Restrictions against women and the marriage bar tend to be selectively applied to decent white-collar jobs, mostly affecting educated women. Furthermore, there has been no shortage of educated male labor due to its adequate supply. Since Korean women spend most of their adult lives in marriage, married women's low participation in the labor force is a critical factor for the low economic returns to women's education throughout their lifetime. Restriction against married women in the labor market also existed in the past of the United States and the Great Britain. However, along with the expansion of the service sector, married women in great numbers flowed into non-manual jobs. The post-1940 increase of married women in the labor force in those countries can be understood to be a result of a labor shortage for non-manual jobs. Also in Taiwan, which shares many common cultural and economic backgrounds with Korea, the marriage bar has been in decline since the late 1970s, along with an increasing demand for female labor in the service sector. In sum, the changes in the demand structure and the supply of educated male labor force will contribute to the lift of the marrige bar in Korea.
From March 1988 to October 1992, 201 CarboMedics cardiac valve prostheses (150 mitral, 50 aortic and 1 tricuspid) were implanted in 166 consecutive patients (mean age 38 years, male/female 66/100) by one surgical team operating on adult cardiac patients at Kyungpook University Hospital. Total follow up represen:toed 6646 patient-months (mean 40mon1hs) and follow up rate was 96%. One hundred and twenty-four patients (74.7 %) were in NYHA functional class 111 or tV preoperatively and 164 patients (98.7 %) were in class I or ll postoperatively. Hospital mortality was 4.2 % and late death was 4.2%. The actuarial survival at 78 months was 89.4%. The linearized incidence of valve related death, prosthetic valve thrombosis, anticoagulant related hemorrhage, non-structural dysfunction and reoperation was 0.72%/pt-yr, 0.18%/pt-yr, 0.18%trapt-yr, 0.18 %/pt-yr and 0. 36%/pt-yr respective y. The 78 month rates of freedom from valve related death, prosthetic valve thrombosis, anticoagulant related hemorrhage, non-structural dysfunction and reoperation were 94.9%, 99.4%, 99.4%, 98.6 % and 97.9 % respectivly. The 78 month rate of freedom from all valve related complications and deaths including hospital mortality was 90.9%. These fact suggest that the CarboMedics cardiac valve has execellent result, low incidence of valve-ie-lated complications and no structural deterioration, and long term follow up study is necessary.
This study developed a method to minimize rice damages and enhance timely control by accurately classifying Whitebacked Planthopper (WBPH). The body size of the 1st-3rd instar was 1.5-2 mm, and the body size of the 4-5 instar was 2.5-3.5 mm. In the third instar, the ratio of the front wing bud and the back wing-bud was 1:1. The fourth instar occupied 3/4 of the front wing-bud, and the 5th instar showed that the front wing-bud covers the back wing-bud. It was confirmed that the 1st instar does not have a sensory plate, the 2nd instar has 2-3, the 3rd instar has 4-5, the 4th instar has 6-9, the 5th instar has 10-15, and the adult instar has 15-20 sensory plates. The female spawning organs were reddish when the spawning horn was inserted. WBPH showed that the larvae of 2-3 larvae most actively feed on rice, and the damaged area was the stem of rice near the ground. In addition, a partial black wound was observed after the feeding. WBPH-susceptible 'Chucheong' was yellowish, and early growth was slower than that of 'Cheongcheong', which was resistant; moreover, a difference between susceptibility and resistance was observed. The identification of the number of such wounds in the bioassay will be a better basis for understanding the difference in susceptibility between WBPH strains and cultivars. These results will be used as basic data for cultivating the WBPH-resistant varieties of rice.
The life-cycle of the aphid-parasite, Aphidius gifuensis, took 11.9 days at $25^{\circ}C$ and 12.1 days at $30^{\circ}C$. The female appearance rate of A. gifuensis was the best at $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ compared to the other temperatures. Optimum rearing temperature of Aphidius gifuensis was $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ Optimum temperatures for A. gifuensis emergence were $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ with 99.1% and 98.2%, respectively. However the emergence rate of Aphidius gifuensis was 58.8% at $10^{\circ}C$. There was a positive correlation between A. gifuensis adult activity and temperature, but there was a negative correlation between developmental period of Myzus persicae nymph and temperature. Among the pests occurring in pepper greenhouse, dominant species was M. persicae and its density was 6~1,024 per plant. The damaged fruit rate by Helicoverpa assulta was 3.3~53.3%. The number of aphid and mummy in the A. gifuensis released plot were 173.5 and 10 in June, 1.8 and 17 in July, 2000, respectively. The numbers of Aphidius gifuensis were 7.5 and 0.4 in May, 27.1 and 2.1 in June, 2001, respectively. The suppressive effects on M. persicae in A. gifuensis released plot was better than the control plot, but there was no significant difference compared to the pesticide-sprayed plot. The first leaf length and the stem width in the A. gifuensis released plot, the control plot, and the pesticide-sprayed plot were not significantly different, but the A. gifuensis released plot showed the highest yield among the plots.
Leptin, the product of the obese gene, is produced by adipose tissue and is known to be a hormone concerned with regulation of appetite and metabolism. Recent reports have shown that leptin is associated not only with obesity but also with female reproduction, but it has not yet been ascertained whether leptin acts directly on the ovaries or indirectly via the hypothalamus or pituitary pathway. The object of this study is to determine the expression of leptin and its receptor in the ovaries of 3 and 8 weeks old rats by immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. In the ovaries of 3 and 8 weeks old rats, leptin was stained in the theca cells and portions of granulosa cells of atretic follicles, whereas leptin receptors was stained in interstitial cells and ova of preantral follicles. The RT-PCR results showed that leptin receptor mRNA was expressed in the ovaries of both immature and adult rats, while leptin mRNA was not. In conclusion, leptin mRNA was not expressed in the ovaries, however, leptin was detected by immunohistochemistry. Compared to leptin itself, leptin receptors in the ovaries were ascertained by both RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. These results suggest that leptin is related to the regulation of the physiological functions of the ovaries.
In order to determine population dynamics of Anopheles sinensis, a survey based on average number of female mosquitoes per trap-night was carried out during the period of 5 years from 1987 to 1991, A. sinensis Birst appeared between the 2nd and 20th April, and were trapped in large number between the 5th and 12th July. The number of trapped mosquitoes began to decrease from mid-August, and a few were collected until mid-November, each year. The average number of A. sinensis in July was 542.6 per trap-night in 1987, but in 1989 increased abruptly to 1,331.4, and then decreased to considerably lower levels, 271, 9 in 1990 and 372. 1 in 1991. The nocturnal activity of A. sinensis to attack humans was found to become active in the early night, and it was gradually decreasing at mid·night, however, then slightly increasing toward dawn. The immature stage of A. sinensis in the rice paddies was Birst found in the correlation pattern with peak adult densities in early July. The highest larval density of A. sinensis in the study area was 21,226×103 in early July 1990. The larval A. sinensis showed high resistance level and resistance ratios against 3 kinds of organo- phosphorous compounds, diazinon, malathion, and fenitrothion, but low resistance against fenthion. The present results indicated that the population density of A, sinensis in Kyongbuk area is decreasing over the five·year from 1987 to 1991. Long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) are important components of brain phospholipds and play important role (s) in brain function. In rats, the maximum brain growth occurs during the period of lactation even though it happens during the third trimester of gestation in human. Since milk contained docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) even through the maternal diet had no DHA and/or a very small amount of its precursor, $\alpha$-linolenic acid ($\alpha$-LnA), an emphasis was given to maternal adipose tissue as a reservoir of this fatty acid. We, therefore, investigated the mesenteric and subcutaneous adipose tissues for their fatty acid composition in dams reared with different fat diets. Diets containing various amounts of $\omega$6 and $\omega$3 fatty acids were given to adult female rats (200-250g) throughout the pregnancy and lactation periods. Diets were composed of 10% (wt/wt) corn oil (CO), soybean oil (SO), perilla seed oil (PO) containing about 60% $\alpha$-LnA, or fish oil (FO) rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA. The fatty acid ompositions of mesenteric and subcutaneous fat were measured and evaluated at Day-2 and Day-15 after parturition. In general, major characteristics of dietary fatty acid composition was reflected on the fatty acid composition of adipose tissues. Dietary fatty acid composition was reflected more on mesenteric fat as compared to subcutaneous fat. Mesenteric fat was found to contain less arachidonic acid (AA) and mesenteric fats of CO, SO and PO groups contained less DHA than did the subcutaneous fat. The P/M/S ratios of adipose tissues were similar between experimental groups while dietary P/M/S ratios differed significantly. It was noticeable that a small proportion of DHA was found in the adipose tissues of animals of CO, SO and PO groups (Day-2) and in SO and PO groups (Day-15), the groups which do not contain DHA in their diets. The percentage of DHA in mesenteric fat o CO, SO and PO groups decreased as lactation continues, while the proportion of DHA in FO group increased. Adipose tissues of FO group had higher DHA/EPA ratio as compared to the diet. Considering the fact that the body contains a large amount of adipose tissues, our present finding suggests that the adipose tissue can serve as a reservoir of DHA for pregnant and lactating rats.
Expression of gonadotropin releasing hormone(GnRH) has been described in the rat ovary. It remains, however, unkown whether GnRH is synthesized as a prohormone. Therefore, this study was performed to verify the expression of pro-GnRH by in situ hybridization and further to investigate the effect of gonadotropin on GnRH or GnRH mRNA in rat ovary by immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization techniques. Adult female Sprague-Dawely rats were used and the estrous cycle was synchronized by intraperitoneal injection of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin(PMSG). Ovaries were fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde and embedded with G.C.T. compound and cut by cryostat. For immunohistochemistry, avidin-biotin peroxidase complex(ABS) method was employed and for in situ hybridization, $^{35}S$-end labeled oligonucleotide was used and followed by autoradiography. By in situ hybridization using GnRH oligomer and GAP(GnRH associated protein) oligomer, GnRH mRNA and GAP mRNA were co-localized in the fullicular cells, luteal cells, interstitial cells and theca cells. GnRH or GnRH mRNA signals in the ovary increased by human chorionic gonadotropin(hCG) injection. At the 3 and 6 hrs after hCG injection, the number of GnRH and GnRH mRNA containing cells increased rapidly and the density of GnRH and GnRH mRHA culminated at 9 hrs after heG injection. With the follicular development, the high expression of GnRH and GnRH mRNA was also observed within the follicles. After ovulation, the density of GnRH or GnRH mRNA decreased in the follicles but increased in the corpus lutea.
Early life history of the endangered species, Gobiobotia macrocephala was investigated to provide baseline data for biological characteristics and recovery. Adult fish were sampled by spoon net at Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do, Korea in April to June 2010. The female's eggs were obtained by injecting Ovaprim and fertilized by dry method in the laboratory. The mature eggs were slightly adhesive and transparent with greyish and average 0.89${\pm}$0.04mm in diameter. The hatching of the embryo took place in about 107 hours after fertilization under water temperature of 23$^{\circ}C$ and newly hatched larvae were average 4.6${\pm}$0.16mm in total length. At 4 days after hatching, they were average 6.1${\pm}$0.20mm in total length and their yolk sacs were completely absorbed. From 15 days after hatching, they entered the juvenile stage and reached at 8.6${\pm}$0.67mm in total length. At the 100 days after hatching, their band patterns and external form were similar to those of adults, and they averaged 31.5${\pm}$3.32mm in total length.

In spite of the world-wide increase of incidence of pesticide poisoning due to greater use of pesticides, the epidemiological study of pesticide poisoning in Korea has been grossly neglected. The author gained access to the medical records for two year period (1981 through 1982) from local clinics, hospitals and health centers of Kyungpook area to investigate the status of the pesticide poisoning. During these two years, there were 1,618 cases of documented pesticide poisoning, of which in 1981 were 765 and in 1982 were 853. Those in the twenties decade of age was the most frequent and the male(70%) was more liable than the female (30%). In view of manner of poisoning, occupational poisoning was 27.8%, accidental 5.6%, and suicidal 66.6%. There are three distinct groups which make up the large majority of both fatal and nonfatal cases; young children who accidentally ingest pesticides, young to middle age adult who are occupationally poisoned, and middle age to older adults who suicidally ingest pesticides. The seasonal distribution of these poisonings disclosed the peak month to be July, with August next, followed by June and September. Only 11% of cases occurred during the three-month winter season of December to February. Thus pesticide caused poison- ing was primarily a summer and early fall occurrence. During these two years, average of 67 cases of poisoning was observed monthly. Of the pesticide poisoning documented, 49% were treated with poisoning patients from local clinic and 43% from hospital. The case fatality rate of occupational poisoning was 0.9%, accidental 5.6% and suicidal 20.3%. The mean overall case fatality rate was 14.1%. Annual incidence of pesticide poisoning was 25.4 per 100,000 population in the study area. There is a nationwide need for more reliable date on pesticide poisoning. This need can only grow more acute with the passage of time because of the increasing importance of pesticides as a cause of morbidity and mortality.
