  • 21century world is changing by leaps and bounds and this among one of new issue ready front environment be. Specially, the human social economy enemy, current of change is already happening even if there is in traffic industry that back activity. That is, point that railroad has competitive power and comparative advantage than other transportation until transportation system construction that is environment-friendly as part of country comparative power strengthening is embossed newly. On this time, railroad reached time that environment management that it is applied that is environment-Paradigm over management whole as well as field of technology such as construction and rolling stocks is necessary. This paper wishes to grope plan that introduce this in railroading hereafter by examining necessity introduction in railway operation through environment marketing example. It must go to Ready front Green-railway.

  • At this current, KORAIL track maintenance system has been worked with the method of corrective maintenance which is repaired some location exceeded the track management criteria as a result of track measurement. It brings about a lot of additional expenses that the corrective maintenance might be a way of missing an appropriate maintenance time, after occurring some trouble on the track due to track maintenance characteristic. We sincerely need a track maintenance system including the concept of preventive maintenance that track is corrected with predicting the trend of track irregularity. I would like to present a development direction for Korea track maintenance system having a good application in our track with analyzing TRAMS21 and RAMSYS as overseas railway company has operated a track maintenance system.

  • At present, one of the big characteristics in electric power market in korea is unique seller but in the near future competitions are expected in the market. so additional service for the electric power are expected. Also with development of IT technology, remote inspection for power usage are possible so as consumption pattern analysis. KORAIL is one of the biggest consumer in electric power market so it is necessary to investigate power consumption pattern. This paper presents electric load consumption pattern for representative substation like urban subway, high-speed train, industrial line and simulation program for electric power rate definition program based on billing system database. Base on the substation annual power usage DB data, the characteristic of the substation power consumption are investigated and effective electrical billing system are compared each other. Through this program it is verified that we can save more then several hundred million won for a year.

  • The intelligent safety system for level crossing which employs information and communication technology has been developed in USA and Japan, etc. But, in Korea, the relevant research has not been performed. In this paper, we analyze the cause of railway level crossing accidents and the inherent problem of the existing safety equipments. Based on analyzed results, we design the intelligent safety system which prevent collision between a train and a vehicle. This system displays train approaching information in real-time at roadside warning devices, informs approaching train of the detected obstacle in crossing areas, and is interconnected with traffic signal to empty the crossing area before train comes. Especially, we present the video based obstacle detection algorithm and verify its performance with prototype H/W since the abrupt obstacles in crossing areas are the main cause of level crossing accidents. We identify that the presented scheme detects both pedestrian and vehicle with good performance. Currently, we demonstrate developed railway crossing intelligence system at one crossing of Young-dong-seon line of Korail with Sea Train cockpit.

  • In this study, vertical and horizontal accelerometers were installed at the both side of car body and tachometer was installed on the bogie, for the purpose of stability analysis of Korail Airport Express Train during driving. By applying the developed algorithm, the peak-to-peaks of horizontal and vertical acceleration which were matched with location by tachometer were found and compared with the threshold values. The threshold values per velocities which were presented in the "Metro Train Performance Criteria" were applied here. The validity of the developed algorithm was shown by comparing the site investigation and the measured values at frost heave locations.

  • In order to prepare for the commercialization of Korean tilting train, this study was made on the pre-analysis of risk factors that can happen during operation, and emergency measures for safe operation of tilting train. The purpose of the study of emergency measures is to help to make tilting train run safely by making counteraction procedures for unusual situations such as train breakdown or accidents during the operation of a tilting train so that the engineer can quickly take care of each situation. Based on the items of emergency measures for EMU operated by Korean Railroad(or Korail), possible breakdown items during operation were selected and prioritized considering the occurring frequency and emergency level of each breakdown. In addition to these items, by adding items to represent tilting train's typicalfunctions such as tilting function error, tilting storage battery's electric pressure drop, etc, a total of62 emergency items were finally selected and measures for each item was made.

  • At present, KORAIL is in the middle of renovating. All steps exert great effort at cost reduction and a profit improvement. Especially to improve maintenance method and inspection period at the rolling-stock division lots of research is under progress. Daily inspection of rolling stocks is to operate the rolling stock normally. Daily inspection items are driving control device, coupling device, brake system, water system and air conditioning system, electrical system etc. Half of the maintenance manpower are inputted at daily inspection. Strengthens the quality and optimize the proportion of daily inspection are urgent problem. Daily inspection period extension aim is as follows. KTX from 3,500km to 5,000km, passenger car from 1st to 3,500km, new style electric locomotive from 2nd to 5,000km, the diesel locomotive is 2,800km from 1,200km. In this paper, the optimal daily inspection period and methods are considered including expected problem and counter measures.

  • In answer to the increase of demand for the safety in railroad, the safety activities are tried out. According to 'KORAIL Instruction number 2001-49', the project for developing Integrated Centralized Traffic Control Center has been carried out and the safety activities are guaranteed by documents named 'Safety Plan' and 'Safety Requirements' from this project. However the development system is not enough for the full safety activities. Therefore this paper we describes the relationship of safety activities and development systems and proposes the efficient direction of safety activities.

  • After the year of 2000, the need of safety increases in field of railroad. The project for developing Integrated Centralized Traffic Control(CTC) center started at 2002 to control the full domestic railroad network. A traffic control software was required the safety activity and assessment, according to 'KORAIL Instruction number 2001-49'. There were many trials and errors to perform safety activity because the technology and recognition of safety activity is in primary stage. However the safety activities are gradually stabilized. This paper describes the safety life-cycle and development life-cycle of Integrated CTC S/W and a suitable life-cycle of safety to develop S/W of Integrated CTC.

  • In recently, our social is entering to service infinite competitive time., So If companys don't give satifactory and an impression customers, they don't exist. The Companies that operate railway are promoted(Seoul metro). The Korail, Seol metropolitan Rapid Transit Corperation, Incheon Rapid Transit Corporation), they are into a stronger competitor. So the service for customer is more inportant to improve the image and administration than before. Especially, station workers who work near the customer are important for cooperation image. But, there are only a few employees to operate the station like ticketing in railway station, There aren't reinforcement the service employees and expanse the utility system. especially, since the transportation card is introduced in 1996, the customers who use the T-Money card are increased. So the change of service system is necessary to provide a substantial service to customer. This paper derives the problems through analysising the operating system of station, and presents the improvement to provide substantial services to customer
