The Hajong are the ancient tribal forest community among the ethnic minorities of the North-East region of Bangladesh. The study was carried out with respect to three income groups highlighting their indigenous knowledge. A total of forty-five households (fifteen from each income groups) were assessed using different participatory appraisals through semi-structured questionnaires. A special type of indigenous knowledge on food habit was explored in the Hajong community, which correspond to the severe dependence on forest resources. They collect their food resources from homestead forest (45%) followed by forest (40%), market and others. They have indigenous hunting procedure to trap the animal in the forest. Twenty three tree species were tremendously planted in their homestead forests which are the very important source of food. Male are highly responsible to collect the food materials from forest as well as other sources.
Green consumption refers to a variety of activities including use and purchase of eco-friendly products and services and disposing of products in an eco-friendly manner. The goal of this research was to evaluate the effects of a green consumption education and awareness program offered to young children in a university-sponsored daycare. The education and awareness program was designed to improve young children's knowledge and behaviors toward the environment through green consumption education. The program was presented to 22 5-year old children in 15-20 minutes sessions, once a week for 4 weeks. Evaluation of the program was carried out through individual interviews with the children and their mothers. Upon the completion of the green consumption education program, there were noticeable changes in children's knowledge and behavior toward the environment. Mothers of participating children reported that children's environmental behaviors changed significantly, displaying a stronger green consumption attitude. This study suggests that environmental educational program during early childhood educational is an effective way of improving children's perceptions of environmental and conservation practices.
The purpose of this study were (1) to find out if socio-demographic, resource, psychological, and socio-environmental variables have significant effect6s on environmentally concious consumer behavior and (2) to examine the independent influences of variables related to the environmentally concious behavior. the subjects were 384 housewives living in Kwangju. the data were collected by questionnare methods and analyzed through SPSS PC+ program. The findings were as follows : Environmentally concious behavior differed significantly according to family income, employment, attending a consumer education experience, knowledge about environmental conservation method, post-industrial consumer value orientation, awareness of the seriousness of environmental problems, feeling of efficacy about helping to solve environmental problems, perception of time limit, influence of reference group and the degree of interesting in environmental information. The most critical variable was influence of reference group, that is, environmentally concious behavior by friends and neighbors.
Stone has been one of the most intensely studied materials in conservation. Understanding the deterioration of stone needs various knowledge in different mineralogical and physical characteristics and its weathering response under different climate and environment. The alteration and weathering of stone is affected by natural or artificial elements whether they are physical, chemical or biological damaging factors. It can be said that the bio deterioration of stone is coupled with every environmental factors, which induce decomposition of stone structure, either directly or indirectly as a form of catalysis. Many elements contribute to the deterioration of stone monuments and other objects of cultural value such as pagoda, stature of Buddha, etc. This report concentrates on the action of biodeteriorative factorsincluding bacteria, algae and higher plants. Preventive and remedial methods and a selection of chemical treatments are also described.
The aim of the present contribution is to consider and underline the essential interactions among the historical knowledge, the seismic vulnerability assessment, the investigation experimental tools, the preservation of the architectural quality and the strengthening design in regard to architectural heritage conservation. These topics are argued in relation to Palazzo Murena in Perugia, designed in the eighteenth century by the famous Architect Luigi Vanvitelli, and currently headquarters of the city's University. Based on the surveys and the visual inspections, a preliminary a priori global analysis has been performed by means of the FME method. The obtained results permitted to plan an experimental tests campaign inclusive of structural health monitoring. The new achieved "knowledge" of the building allowed to refine the seismic safety assessment. In particular it was highlighted that the "mezzanine floor" can be a vulnerable element of the building with the collapse of its masonry walls. Preserving the architectural characteristics, a local reinforcement intervention is proposed for the above-mentioned level; this consists of the application of plaster with FRCM, assuring an adequate strength, without burden the masonry structure with additional weight, and therefore a decreasing of the seismic vulnerability. The necessity to consider, in this ongoing research, other local mechanisms is highlighted in the unfolding of the last part of work.

This study was conducted to develope an evaluation system for sustainable conservation of old trees with historic and traditional values in rural areas. Existing evaluation system was modified through field application of 10 old trees and expert research twice for development of new evaluation system. 4 evaluation items in 10 evaluation items were deleted by first expert research. Some items are proposed to offer a figure explanation by second expert research. End-developed evaluation items are consisted of 6 items ((1) Ground State, (2) Blight, Harmful Insects, (3) Tree Form, (4) Canopy Vitality, (5) Bark, (6) Damage) reflecting the order of importance evaluation. Old trees evaluation system developed in this study is expected to be utilized continuously to conserve the old trees in the rural areas and gradually help to increases the historic and traditional values.

Based on a survey of citizens and data analysis on the environmental status of the Miyun Reservoir watershed, China, the environmental awareness of citizens residing in the watershed and the impacting factors are discussed. The contingent valuation method was used to evaluate the willingness of villagers to pay (WTP) for abatement of the rural domestic pollution and to assess the intensity level of the villagers' desire for improving environmental conditions in the Miyun Reservoir watershed. It was found that rural watershed residents had a fundamental cognitive understanding of the pollution status and protection measures of the Miyun Reservoir. However, based on the survey, local residents had only a small interest in their participation to improve the environmental status of the reservoir, despite their general attitude to protect the reservoir being very positive. Gender and family income were closely associated with the overall attitudes of the population. Public media are the most preferable means for conveying knowledge of environmental protection to people living in the watershed. Increasing the educational level, along with income, are the best ways to enhance the desire of the villagers to improve the environmental quality and management.

The grand challenge for the 21$^{st$ century is to harness knowledge of the earth`s biological and ecological diversity to understand how they shape global environmental systems. This insight benefits both science and society. Biological and ecological data are among the most diverse and complex in the scientific realm. spanning vast temporal and spatial scales, distant localities. and multiple disciplines. Environmental informatics is an emerging discipline applying information science, ecology, and biodiversity to the understanding and solution of environmental problems. In this paper we give an overview of the experiences of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) with this new multidisciplinary science, discuss the application of computing resources to the study of environmental systems, and outline strategic partnership activities in environmental iformatics that are underway, We hope to foster interactions between ecology, biodiversity, and conservation researchers in East Asia-Pacific Rim and those at SDSC and the Partnership for Biodiversity Informatics.
Evaluation methods are employed in environmental impact assessment to choose between different project site, to determine the required measures to compensate impact and to decide whether the environmental impacts are more important than the social or economic effects of a project. The main obstacles that restrict use of quantitative evaluation method are a Lack of knowledge about the environmental effects (e.g. if impacts on wildlife or landscape amenities are predicted) and the relative importance of economic and social issues compared with nature conservation stability of ecosystem or landscape beauty. In Germany, the most common method for site planning is the "ecological risk analysis". It is a kind of multi-criteria-decision-method based on quantitative and qualitative description and ordinal ranking. The various kinds of "ecological balancing methods" that are more recently developed (within the last decade) to quantify the required amount for compensatory measures instead often use cardinal figures to express the value of ecosystems, the intensity of impacts, the need for additional measures to compensate for long recuperative periods when restoring ecosystems and so on. There are still only a view attempts to quantify decisions between environmental and socio-economic issues. Multicriteria-analysis as well as cost-benifit-analysis was used. Some new approaches which are still in a preliminary status are based on contingent valuation and on calculations for compensatory payments (instead of compensatory measures).

Microorganism are centIal core to biosphere sm1ainablity and biogeochemical cycles on this earth. Most of food, medical and pabamceutical new materials through biotechnology are derived from many kinds of microorganisms. Microorganisms are important resources of biotechnology. Beside these, micorbial diversity is key to explore the frontiers of knowledge about the strategies and limits of life. Through the micorotganisms, we can monitor the environmental changes and conditions. Moreover, the microorganismsms play a role in conservation and restoration of higher plants and animals. And we can get a lot of ecological, evolutionary knowledges from microbial models. In spite of these importances, the microbial diversity is not properly evaluted because of their unculturablity. Only 0.001 - 3 % of total bacteria in natural habitats are cultumble and the rest are viable but uncultumble. Only 3,100 species are listed up in the Bergey's Manual. Considering the symbisis and estimated numbers of insect are more than 800,000, the symbiotic microorganisms are about 1,000,000 species. Recently, by using the genetic and molecular technics, the microbial diversity is now unveiled. In this symposium, the genetic, species and ecological diversity will be given. given.
