Elementary Teachers' Knowledge and Teaching of Climate Change

  • This study examines eighteen elementary teachers knowledge and teaching practrice of climate change using the KQEM survey, modified from the survey developed by Leiserowitz, A., Smith, N. & Marlon, J.R. (2010). The survey includes 11 questions from KQEM survey and 2 open ended questions about teachers' knowledge of climate change and their understandings of important climate change concept for elementary students. All of the participant teachers were purposefully selected for the study and were participated in the study volunteerly. The data for this study were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The result of this study indicates that the teachers have knowledge of climate change specifically about the topics of causes of climate change and consequences of climate change such as shifting biome and ecological impacts. While most of the teachers described climate change phenomena using scientific knowledge, some of the teachers (N=2) showed misconceptions about climate change phenomena. Most of the teachers thought the causes of climate change and potential solutions to reduce climate change are important concept that elementary students need to understand about climate change. Actually, most of the teachers are currently teaching the causes and consequences of climate change (N=13) potential solutions to global warming (N= 8). This study could inform teacher educators about what elementary teachers understand about climate change and what elementary teachers are currently teaching about climate change.

유아의 기후변화 대응 지식 및 문제해결 능력 (Young Children's Knowledge and Problem Solving Ability for Preventing Climate Change)

  • 본 연구에서는 유아의 기후변화 대응 지식 및 문제해결 능력의 전반적 경향을 살펴보고, 유아의 성별 및 연령에 따라 기후변화 대응 지식과 문제해결 능력에 차이가 있는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울 및 경기지역 어린이집에 재원 중인 만 5세 및 6세 유아 129명을 연구대상으로 선정하였다. 기후변화 대응 지식을 측정하기 위해 환경보존 지식 검사도구를 수정해 10문항을 사용하였고, 기후변화 대응 문제해결 능력을 측정하기 위해 안전문제해결능력 검사 문항을 기후변화 대응능력과 관련된 내용으로 수정하여 5가지 문제해결 상황을 사용하였다. 수집된 자료는 평균과 표준편차, 이원변량분석, 피어슨의 적률상관계수를 사용하여 분석하였다. 그 결과, 만 6세 유아의 기후변화 대응 지식과 기후변화 대응 문제해결 능력은 만 5세 유아에 비해 더 높았으나, 성별에 따른 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 또한 유아의 기후변화 대응 지식수준이 높을수록 기후변화 대응 문제해결 능력도 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구의 결과는 유아의 기후변화 대응지식과 문제해결 능력 간 관련성을 확인시켜주었으며, 기후변화 대응 지식과 문제해결 능력 향상을 위한 보다 체계적인 교육과정이 유아들에게 제공될 필요가 있음을 보여주었다.

유아의 기후변화 대응능력 향상 프로그램 개발 및 효과 검증 (Development and Evaluation of a Climate Change Education Program for Pre-school Children)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a climate change education program for children in early childhood. The program was developed to enhance young children's ability to prepare for climate change. The program consists of 15 30-minute sessions. 38 5-year-olds (23 boys and 15 girls) participated in this program. The effects of this program were evaluated by the pre-school children's knowledge and problem solving abilities preventing climate change. Results showed that there was a significant experimental effect for knowledge of how to prevent climate change. Experimental group showed more knowledge than the control group. Also, there was a significant experimental effect on the problem solving abilities for preventing climate change. The experimental group showed greater problem solving abilities than the control group. The results of program evaluation revealed that this program was helpful for preparing young children for climate change.

Coping with Climate Change by Using Indigenous Knowledge of Ethnic Communities from in and around Lawachara National Park of Bangladesh

  • Climate change is considered to be one of the most serious threats and its impact is felt by the most vulnerable world's poorest countries including Bangladesh. In particular, ethnic communities, whose livelihoods depend on the use of natural resources, are likely to bear the brunt of adverse impacts. A case study was conducted in a fragile ecosystem of Lawachara national park of Bangladesh, to know the indigenous knowledge of the ethnic communities, how they adapt with the climate change impact by using indigenous knowledge. They use various IK to protect their crops from climate change impact. Thus, government should design policies which will be helpful to make them more resilience to face climate change impact.

Consumers' awareness and behavior intention on meat consumption according to climate change

  • Globally, consumers' enormous and increasing appetite for meat is one of the biggest causes of climate change because livestock industry emits more greenhouse gas than transportation. The purpose of this study is to analyze consumer awareness about the impact of meat consumption on sustainability in response to climate change. Based on the theory of planned behavior, the attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, prior knowledge, and risk perception variables were analyzed to evaluate the impact of climate change awareness over consumer behavior on meat consumption. Major findings are as follows: consumers were aware of climate change but has made few changes to their meat consumption. In addition, changes in meat consumption were found to be caused by health safety concerns, such as disease outbreaks. Significant variables related to meat consumption patterns associated to climate change impacts were household income, age, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and prior knowledge. These results suggest some implications for policy. There is a need for public relations and education to make the public aware of and better understanding of link between climate change and diet. Also, government should make efforts to raise awareness of mitigation of climate change such as comprehensive food labels which are identifying lesser impacts on climate and better dietary guideline instructions which would include coping with climate change.

기후변화에 대한 소비자의 인식과 복식행동 연구 (Study on Consumer Cognition and Clothing behavior of Climate Change)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of climate change cognition on clothing behavior of fashion consumers to understand the impact of climate change on the fashion system. An online survey was conducted of 385 people in their 20s-50s working in the fashion industry as well as general consumers. Data collected from surveys were analyzed by factor analysis and t-test. Results are as follow: First, climate change cognition consists of four sub-dimensions, which are 'knowledge of climate change' and 'recognition of climate change in Korea'. Second, clothing behavior related with climate change consists of six sub-dimensions, which are 'environmentally-friendly fashion purchases', 'new clothes-wearing style affected by climate change', 'ethical fashion consumption', 'pursuit of functional fashion', 'pursuit of seasonless fashion', and 'clothes-wearing in response to climate change.' Last, the group with higher cognition of climate change than the group with lesser cognition had significantly higher degree of trying new styles created because of climate change, making ethical fashion purchases, pursuing functional fashion, and wearing clothes in response to climate change.

기후변화에 대한 어업인 인식의 특성 분석 (An Analysis of Fishermen's Perception to Climate Change in Korea)

  • This study indicates that 84.5% of fishermen have perceived climate change and 74.9% of fishermen have responded that frequency and intensity of the impacts of climate change are increasing. The results of regression analysis have shown that the level of fishermen experiencing the impacts of climate change differs according to individual's characteristics including age, length of experience, sea area (fishing area) and types of fisheries. About half of the respondents have shown that they are not taking any actions against the effects of climate change. The main reasons are that they either have lack of knowledge on how to respond to the impacts of climate change or have the perception that climate change is irresistible. The majority of respondents have responded that they are not aware of the government's climate change policy and emphasized that it is necessary to have effective countermeasures strengthening the provision of information about climate change policy. The result of perception survey have highlighted that it is essential for the government and the fishermen to share relevant information and to consider method of cooperation.

중학교 과학과 기후변화 교육 프로그램 개발과 적용 (Development and Application of Climate Change Education Program in Middle School Science)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 중학생들의 기후변화에 대한 이해 증진과 미래의 기후변화에 대한 예측을 통해 기후변화에 대응하고 실천할 수 있는 능력을 길러 주기 위한 중학교 과학과 기후변화 교육 프로그램을 개발하고 적용하여 그 효과를 분석하는 것이다. 이 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중학교 과학과 교과시간을 위한 기후변화 교육 프로그램이 개발되었다. 중학교 과학과 기후변화 교육 프로그램은 8개의 주제가 기후변화의 현상과 원인, 영향 및 대응방안 등의 교육내용을 중심으로 중학교 교과 교육과정에 활용될 수 있도록 개발되었으며, 기후변화가 가지는 지구시스템 과학 교육의 특성과 지속가능 발전 교육의 통합적인 특성을 반영하도록 개발하였다. 둘째, 개발된 중학교 과학과 기후변화 교육 프로그램을 적용하여 효과를 분석하였다. 효과를 분석해 본 결과, 중학교 과학과 기후변화 교육프로그램은 학생들의 기후변화에 대한 지식 이해 수준 및 기후변화에 대한 인식 및 태도, 실천의지의 향상에 기여했음을 보여주었다.

기후변화 적응정책 관련 생태계 지식정보 수요와 활용도 증진 방향 - 생태계 기후변화 리스크 평가 및 적응대책을 중심으로 - (A Survey of Ecological Knowledge and Information for Climate Change Adaptation in Korea - Focused on the Risk Assessment and Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change -)

  • 본 연구에서는 기후변화에 따른 우리나라 생태계 적응 연구 및 지식현황을 진단하고, 국가의 기초생태정보가 생태부문의 기후변화 적응 지식 및 근거기반으로 기능하는 현황을 파악함으로써 향후 생태계 분야 기후변화 지식과 생태정보 발전방향에 대해 시사점을 도출하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이러한 측면에서 우리나라 생태계 관련 국가기관 및 17개 광역지자체 출연연구원에서 생태계 분야 적응연구를 수행하는 연구자를 대상으로, "생태계 분야 기후적응 지식기반 진단 및 정보수요" 조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 우리나라 기후변화 적응정책 수립 연구 수행을 위한 생태정보 활용현황, 생태계 분야 적응지식 향상을 위한 정보 수요, 생태정보 활용도 증진방안을 도출하였다. 설문응답자의 대다수(90.7%)는 생태정보가 적응 연구수행과 연관성이 크다고 응답하였지만, 현행 생태정보가 적응 연구 수행에 도움이 된다고 응답한 것은 과반(53.2%)에 불과하며, 생태정보 전반의 내용 및 품질향상과 함께 '기후변화로 인한 생태계 변화(생산성, 군집구조, 먹이사슬, 생물계절, 분포범위, 개체수 등)'에 대한 지식기반 강화 및 정보 구축이 시급한 것으로 나타났다. 우리나라 연구자들은 생태분야 적응 연구 및 정보생산 고도화를 위해, 지역 생태계 조사 및 인벤토리 구축, 기후변화 모니터링 설계 고도화, 지역 사례연구 필요성을 지적한 가운데, 정보생산을 뒷받침 할 수 있는 생태계 변화모니터링 지침/가이드라인의 필요성을 강조하였다. 생태정보의 이용 활성화를 위해서는 국가차원의 생태정보 플랫폼 구축을 통해 국가 및 지역의 적응 네트워크를 운영함으로써 지식과 정보를 교류하는 동시에 생태계 유형 및 시공간 정보/지식의 확장이 가장 필요한 것으로 나타났다.

Trends in the effects of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems in the Republic of Korea

  • In this review, we aimed to synthesize the current knowledge on the observed and projected effects of climate change on the ecosystems of Korea (i.e., the Republic of Korea (ROK) or South Korea), as well as the main causes of vulnerability and options for adaptation in these ecosystems based on a range of ecological and biogeographical data. To this end, we compiled a set of peer-reviewed papers published since 2014. We found that publication of climate-related studies on plants has decreased in the field of plant phenology and physiology, whereas such publication has rapidly increased in plant and animal community ecology, reflecting the range shifts and abundance change that are occurring under climate change. Plant phenology studies showed that climate change has increased growing seasons by advancing the timing of flowering and budburst while delaying the timing of leafing out. Community ecology studies indicated that the future ranges of cold-adapted plants and animals could shrink or shift toward northern and high-elevation areas, whereas the ranges of warm-adapted organisms could expand and/or shift toward the areas that the aforementioned cold-adapted biota previously occupied. This review provides useful information and new insights that will improve understanding of climate change effects on the ecosystems of Korea. Moreover, it will serve as a reference for policy-makers seeking to establish future sectoral adaptation options for protection against climate change.
