MOCT(Ministry of Construction St Transportation) suggested "A Plan for Implementation of Knowledge-based Economy for the Construction Industry" to add high value to a construction industry. by means of knowledge-based management. However, there is no knowledge management system which considers characteristics of a domestic construction industry. So a useful knowledge vanished the moment a company terminated a construction Uoject. Therefore, it is necessary to develop "An application method of a knowledge management system for the construction industry" which takes a real environment into consideration. This study aims to present the road map of a knowledge management system which helps the bodies of the construction industry(government, research center/university, enterprise, etc) to do a knowledge activity efficiently. To accomplish this objective, we analyzed overall knowledge management activities. In addition we suggested an implementation direction and strategy of a knowledge management system for the construction industry. As results of this study, we presented the road map of a knowledge management system for the construction industry, which is composed of policy forum, study forum, professional forum, research forum and knowledge 8t information DB. We expect that results of this study will be used as a basis for implementing the knowledge portal that brings a construction industry to a high value added industry.
With the rapid changes of business environments and the tremendous amount of information generated from those environments, most companies must learn to manage those changes and information more effectively. Furthermore, within those amounts of information, the information that meets with achieving the goal of each company should be selected and managed as a core competency, i.e. the knowledge, visible and invisible assets of the company. Knowledge management, as a tool of creating, sharing, and applying such knowledge, has pursued those requirements of companies and been studied by many researchers and consultants, especially focusing on the Knowledge Map'. It is said that a knowledge map is a powerful tool for scanning and managing the knowledge that exists in a company and that it is the most important part of establishing a knowledge management base. Until now, however, there have been no specific or practical models for establishing a knowledge map, in spite of the concern. For this reason, this paper suggests a practical model for establishing a knowledge map in terms of a knowledge acquisition procedure based on the traditional research concerning concept maps. In addition to this, for examining the validity of the model, a case study on the 'P' steel and iron company has been performed. This paper's methodology on developing a knowledge map and the procedures to apply them to the real business environment will suggest a cornerstone in the field of practical implementation of knowledge management.

In this research, we propose an automatic knowledge acquisition and composite knowledge expression mechanism based on machine learning and relational database. Most of traditional approaches to develop a knowledge base and inference engine of expert systems were based on IF-THEN rules, AND-OR graph, Semantic networks, and Frame separately. However, there are some limitations such as automatic knowledge acquisition, complicate knowledge expression, expansibility of knowledge base, speed of inference, and hierarchies among rules. To overcome these limitations, many of researchers tried to develop an automatic knowledge acquisition, composite knowledge expression, and fast inference method. As a result, the adaptability of the expert systems was improved rapidly. Nonetheless, they didn't suggest a hybrid and generalized solution to support the entire process of development of expert systems. Our proposed mechanism has five advantages empirically. First, it could extract the specific domain knowledge from incomplete database based on machine learning algorithm. Second, this mechanism could reduce the number of rules efficiently according to the rule extraction mechanism used in machine learning. Third, our proposed mechanism could expand the knowledge base unlimitedly by using relational database. Fourth, the backward inference engine developed in this study, could manipulate the knowledge base stored in relational database rapidly. Therefore, the speed of inference is faster than traditional text -oriented inference mechanism. Fifth, our composite knowledge expression mechanism could reflect the traditional knowledge expression method such as IF-THEN rules, AND-OR graph, and Relationship matrix simultaneously. To validate the inference ability of our system, a real data set was adopted from a clinical diagnosis classifying the dermatology disease.
Knowledge integration is becoming a primary function of improving organizational capabilities and performance in today's convergence paradigm. The knowledge integration capability of employees has increasingly been regarded as a critical source for developing new products and services. This study investigates the influential factors of employees' knowledge integration capability and its effects. A theoretical research model was developed based on the socio-technical perspective and information processing theory. The model includes teamwork quality, expertise, IT support, and knowledge complexity as the primary influential factors of employees' knowledge integration capability. A large-scale survey was conducted for gathering data (a total of 316 samples from 141 organizations) to test the proposed model. The test results of the hypotheses show that expertise and knowledge complexity are the significant influential factors of employees' knowledge integration capability, and also the capability has a positive effect on the knowledge creation performance of employees. Our findings contribute to the development of initiatives for promoting employees' knowledge integration capability, especially in knowledge intensive organizations focusing on convergence products and services.
New knowledge is created through the dynamic interaction of knowledge that depends largely on a social context within the organization. Social processes influence the nature of knowledge and learning. This paper is rooted in the concept of social capital. Social capital theory emphasizes the importance of social relationship. Using social capital theory, this paper suggests three factors that must be satisfied for the development of knowledge combinative capability. The first factor is that the opportunity exists to make the exchange or combination of knowledge. The second factor is that people is motivated for the creation of new knowledge. The third factor is that people must share the common knowledge. This paper examines the change case of KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office). This case provides evidence that the three factors can develop social relationship, and build knowledge combinative capability. The man finding from this research is that social factors play an important part in the creation of knowledge, and processes of knowledge exchange and combination heavily rely upon social patterns, practices and processes in ways which emphasize the value and importance of collective action and knowledge sharing. This research may have several implications for the development of the knowledge creation mechanisms.
Improving productivity of knowledge workers is an important issue in the 21st century referred as knowledge-based society. The core key word is knowledge sharing among constituents of an organization. The purpose of this study is to combine the social network position factors with attitude and behavior factors, and develop an integrated research model for the knowledge sharing among members of an organization. This study adopted the integrated theoretical framework based on social capital, self-efficacy, transactive memory, and knowledge sharing. Surveys were conducted to 42 organizational members from a department in a leading IT outsourcing company to empirically test the proposed research model. In order to validate the proposed research model, social network analysis tool, UCINET, a structural equation modeling tool, SmartPLS, were utilized. The empirical result showed that, first of all, organizational members' familiarity network position had significant influence on knowledge self-efficacy and transactive memory capability. Second, knowledge self-efficacy and transactive memory capability affected knowledge sharing intention. Third, knowledge sharing intention also had an impact on the job performance. However, organizational members' expertise network position had no significant influence on knowledge self-efficacy and transactive memory capability. This finding reveals the importance of the emotional approach rather than the rational approach in knowledge management. The theoretical and practical implications on the research findings were discussed along with limitations.
Recent trends in business are characterized by recognition of the importance of knowledge assets. Especially, this phenomenon is receiving more momentum as our society goes digital rapidly. The concept of Knowledge Management has long been used as an effective way of restructuring the management process of a firm. In literature regarding knowledge management, a number of successful cases were reported, where knowledge-based management activities could dramatically enhance a firm's strategic performance for years. However, there exists very little research investigating the effect of knowledge management on corporate competitiveness. Researchers as well as practitioners need more rigorous results about such issues, especially how much the knowledge management strategic initiatives may have an influence on the firm's competitiveness. In this sense, we need an empirical study adopting statistical approaches due to the existence of abundant knowledge management case studies. To fill this research void, this study proposes a research model testing whether knowledge management activities could improve corporate competitiveness. We collected 321 valid questionnaires from participants in knowledge management activities in the tourism industry and applied a structural equation model. Empirical results showed that knowledge management activities have a positive impact on knowledge management efficiency and finally corporate competitiveness. We hope that this study will shed light on further rigorous studies considering tourism industry as a major strategic activity.
Knowledge Management (KM) is the systematic, explicit, and deliberate building, renewal, and application of knowledge to maximize an enterprise's knowledge-related effectiveness and performance from its knowledge assets. KM applies systematic approaches to find, understand, and use knowledge to create new capabilities, solve problems, enable superior performance, and encourage innovation. The purpose of this research is to identify the relationship of KM capabilities (KM infrastructures and KM processes) and organizational effectiveness and performance. An empirical research of the relationship of knowledge management capabilities and organizational effectiveness and performance is conducted from the information systems and knowledge management literature in order to access the following questions: (1) Does the knowledge management infrastructure contribute to the organizational effectiveness and peformance? (2) Does the knowledge management process contribute to the organizational effectiveness and peformance? The research design employs a mail survey questionnaire for gathering data from 500 firms in a number of industries. From a mail survey of 61 top managers of knowledge management, the results of empirical analyses provide the following major findings: (1) While the external effectiveness of organization is influenced by the cultural infrastructure of knowledge management, the overall performance of organization is influenced by the structural infrastructure of knowledge management. (2) While the external effectiveness of organization is influenced by the application and protection processes of knowledge management, the overall performance of organization is influenced by the knowledge acquisition process of knowledge management.
A bunch of management studies have repeatedly revealed that the extent of knowledge sharing across organization contributes significantly to the firm's sustainable competitiveness. However, in reality, it is a hard fact that we must admit that many individuals working in competitive situations always feel reluctant to share knowledge. Especially, positive and negative emotions play an important role in changing individual' s intentions about knowledge sharing and knowledge utilization as well. Intention about knowledge sharing is usually hindered by in-group rivalries. Also employees feel negative in sharing their knowledge with colleagues when they expect to receive little support and recognition in return after doing that. These considerations point out the importance of individual's knowledge sharing and the role of knowledge management in order to assure competitiveness. Considering these facts, the main purpose of this study is to investigate why people is willing or unwilling to share their knowledge with others and utilize the knowledge in the competitive context where potential rivalry is still expected. In answering these research issues, we analyzed 258 valid questionnaires garnered from online community where a number of people has been actively interacting with registered members to share crucial knowledge about sensitive issues. Results revealed that the proposed research issues are adequately solved with significant statistical results.
As the external knowledge networks of firms have become more and more important to their product and service innovations, many global leading companies such as P & G, IBM, and Samsung Electronics have formulated and implemented their open innovation strategy. This study attempts to empirically analyze the effects of CEOs' supports for external knowledge networks, external knowledge network-oriented cultures and inter-organizational knowledge management systems as the major antecedents to external knowledge networks by using the data based on organizational members' perceptions about them. Based on 847 samples collected from employees in three companies in the medical, the construction and the IT service industries, this study performed a structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis about the effects of the antecedents to the external knowledge networks on product and service innovations through Partial Least Squares (PLS). The empirical findings of this study show that CEOs' supports for external knowledge network positively influence product and service innovations, partially mediated by external knowledge network-oriented cultures and inter-organizational knowledge management systems. And they also show that external knowledge network-oriented cultures and inter-organizational knowledge management systems have a positive effect on product and service innovations, respectively, partially mediated by external knowledge networks. With these new findings, academic and practical implications are discussed.
