  • Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) is one of the most widely used clustering algorithms and has been used in many applications successfully. However, FCM has some shortcomings and initial prototype selection is one of them. As FCM is only guaranteed to converge on a local optimum, different initial prototype results in different clustering. Therefore, much care should be given to the selection of initial prototype. In this paper, a new initialization method for FCM using kernel density estimation (KDE) is proposed to resolve the initialization problem. KDE can be used to estimate non-parametric data distribution and is useful in estimating local density. After KDE, in the proposed method, one initial point is placed at the most dense region and the density of that region is reduced. By iterating the process, initial prototype can be obtained. The initial prototype such obtained showed better result than the randomly selected one commonly used in FCM, which was demonstrated by experimental results.

  • Statistical analysis of the coordinate information is regarded as one of the major GIS functions. Among them, one of the most fundamental analysis is density analysis of point features. For analyzing the density appropriately, determining the search radius, kernel radius, has critical importance. In this study, using L-index, known as its usefulness for choosing the kernel radius in previous researches, radius for density analysis of various point features are estimated, and the behavior of L-index is studied based on the estimated results. As results, L-index is not suitable to determine the search radius for the point features that are evenly distributed with small clusters, because the pattern of the L-index is depends on the size of the study area. But for the point features with small number of highly clustered areas, L-index is suitable, because the pattern of the L-index is not affected by the size of study area.

  • Tidal residual is being an important factor by the influence of the climate change in terms of the coastal safety and defense. It is one of the most important factor for the determination of the reference sea level in order to check the safety and performance of the coastal structures in company with the typhoon intensity variation. The probability density function (pdf) of tidal residuals in the Korean coasts have a non-ignorable skewness and high kurtosis. It is highly restricted to the application of the normal pdf assumption as an approximated pdf of tidal residuals. In this study, the pdf of tidal residuals estimated using the Kernel function is suggested as a more reliable and accurate pdf of tidal residuals than the normal function. This suggested pdf shows a good agreement with the empirical cumulative distribution function and histogram. It also gives the more accurate estimation result on the extreme values in comparison with the results based on the normal pdf assumption.

  • This research used GIS spatial analysis model and Huff probability model and achieved trade area analysis of area center. we constructed basic maps that were surveyed according to types of business, number of households etc. using a land registration map of LMIS(Land Management Information System) in Bokdae-dong, Cheongju-si. Kernel density function and NNI(Nearest Neighbor Index) was used to estimate store distribution center area in neighborhood life zones. The center point of area and scale were estimated by means of the center area. Huff probability model was used in abstracting trade areas according to estimated center areas, those was drew map. Therefore, this study describes method that can apply in Huff probability model through kernel density function and NNI of GIS spatial analysis techniques. A trade area was abstracted more exactly by taking advantage of this method, which will can aid merchant for the foundation of small sized enterprises.

  • The observed data of enough period need for design of hydrological works. But, most hydrological data aren't enough. Therefore in this paper, hourly precipitation generated by nonhomogeneous Markov chain model using variable Kernel density function. First, the Kernel estimator is used to estimate the transition probabilities. Second, wet hours are decided by transition probabilities and random numbers. Third, the amount of precipitation of each hours is calculated by the Kernel density function that estimated from observed data. At the results, observed precipitation data and generated precipitation data have similar statistic. Also, rainfall mass curve is derived by calculated transition probabilities for generation of hourly precipitation.

  • To estimate probabilistic distribution function from experimental data, kernel density estimation(KDE) is mostly used in cases when data is insufficient. The estimated distribution using KDE depends on bandwidth selectors that smoothen or overfit a kernel estimator to experimental data. In this study, various bandwidth selectors such as the Silverman's rule of thumb, rule using adaptive estimates, and oversmoothing rule, were compared for accuracy and conservativeness. For this, statistical simulations were carried out using assumed true models including unimodal and multimodal distributions, and, accuracies and conservativeness of estimating distribution functions were compared according to various data. In addition, it was verified how the estimated distributions using KDE with different bandwidth selectors affect reliability analysis results through simple reliability examples.

  • aThe terms of hard and soft as applied to wheats are descriptions of the texture of the kernel. A hard wheat kernel required greater force to cause it to disintegrate than those a soft wheat kernel. Factors than can affect the measurement of hardness outnumber those that affect hardness itself. Kernel texture is the most important single characteristic that affects the functionality of a common wheat. It affect the way in which must be tempered for milling ; the yield and the particle size, and density of flour particles ; and the end use properties in milling, breadmaking, production of soft wheat products, and noodle-making. Papers are reviewed from various sources not only hardness but flour functionality.

  • Importance sampling methods have been developed with the aim of reducing the computational costs inherent in Monte Carlo methods. This study proposes a new algorithm called the adaptive kernel method which combines and modifies some of the concepts from adaptive sampling and the simple kernel method to evaluate the structural reliability of time variant problems. The essence of the resulting algorithm is to select an appropriate starting point from which the importance sampling density can be generated efficiently. Numerical results show that the method is unbiased and substantially increases the efficiency over other methods.

  • Popcorn grains are consumed around 10,000 tons per year, in South Korea. It is consumed in amusement parks, movie theaters and snacks. The size of the popcorn processed market in Korea is estimated to be 3.6 billon won per year. So, the popcorn grain market has good prospects. On the other hand, domestic grain is at the level of 1 %, which is less domestic production than the size of the market. Maize Research Institute has developed domestic varieties in order to increase the use of domestically produced grains. The Oyrunpopcorn variety which was commonly distributed is a preferred cultivar because it has a good popping rate compared to imported grains. In addition, 'G-Popcom', 'Oyrun #2' and 'Kichan Popcorn' were developed, which diversified the choice of the farmers. Yield per unit area is important to improve farmers' income. At present, domestic grain production is traded at 5,000 won/kg, so if the yield improves, a high farmer^ income is expected. Therefore, this study compared the growth characteristics and yield according to the appropriate sowing time and plant density to improve the yield of domestically grown popcorn. We used 'Oryunpopcorn', for this research. Agronomic characteristics were compared by sowing times April 23, May 22 and June 22. The 100 seeds weight were 15.9g, 17.7g and 15.0g, respectively. Kernel weight planted in May 22 is the highest value. Yield per 10a were 414kg, 434kg and 296kg, respectively. It shows the yield planted in May 22 was higher than other trials. Therefore, the sowing time to increase the kernel weight and yield is appropriate for planting in mid-May. The number of plants in planting density trial was 5,700 plants, 4,700 plants and 4,000 plants in 10a area. Plant height at each trial were 221 cm, 214cm and 218cm, respectively. It was the highest height in 5,700 plants trials. The 100 kernel weight were 14.8g, 15.9g and 16.5g, respectively. Low planting density trial indicated high kernel weight. Yield per 10a was 415kg, 357kg and 314kg, respectively. It was higher at high density trial than other experimental plots. Therefore, appropriate sowing time was in mid-May and planting density was 5,700 plants/10a in order to increase the yield of popcorn in South Korea. This study will be useful for farmer's income to use the domestic cultivars.
