  • In order to judge that whether the vehicles in different images which are captured by surveillance cameras represent the same vehicle or not, we proposed a novel vehicle face recognition algorithm based on improved Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF), different from traditional vehicle recognition algorithms, there are fewer effective features in vehicle face image than in whole vehicle image in general, which brings certain difficulty to recognition. The innovations mainly include the following two aspects: 1) we proposed a novel idea that the vehicle type can be determined by a few key regions of the vehicle face such as logo, grille and so on; 2) Through adding weight, sparseness and classification property constraints to the NMF model, we can acquire the effective feature bases that represent the key regions of vehicle face image. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm not only achieve a high correct recognition rate, but also has a strong robustness to some non-cooperative factors such as illumination variation.

  • The progressive collapse potential of steel moment framed structures due to abrupt removal of a column is investigated based on the energy principle. Based on the changes of component's internal energy, this paper analyzes structural member's sensitivity to abrupt removal of a column to determine a sub-structure resisting progressive collapse. An energy-based structural damage index is defined to judge whether progressive collapse occurs in a structure. Then, a simplified beam damage model is proposed to analyze the energies absorbed and dissipated by structural beams at large deflections, and a simplified modified plastic hinges model is developed to consider catenary action in beams. In addition, the correlation between bending moment and axial force in a beam during the whole deformation development process is analyzed and modified, which shows good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This paper proposes a topology-based algorithm for recognizing the passage features using a concept of multi-face hole loop. The Multi-face hole loop is a concetpual hole loop that is formed over several connected faces. A passage feature is recognized in the proposed approach by two multi-face hole loops that constitute its enterance and exit. The algorithm proposed in this paper checks the connectivity of the two multi-face hole loops to recognize passage features. The total number of passage features in a part is calculated from Euler equation and is compared with the number of found passage features to decide when to terminate. To find all multi-face hole loops in a part, this paper proposes an algorithm for finding all combinations of connected faces. The edge convexity is used to judge the validity of multi-face hole loops. By using the algorithm proposed in this paper, the passage features could be recognized effectively. The approach proposed in this paper is illustrated with several example parts.

  • The quality of building space program is a key to measure how the building performance satisfies its owner and users. However assuring its efficiency requires reliable criteria that reflect high level experience knowledge in the field. This study suggests a plan to gauge the level of building space performance using expert knowledge, which has not been utilized well enough but should play a critical role. In order to setup an expert system measuring level of the space program, we firstly optimized the space areas to the best case in a knowledgebase and use them as criteria to judge the quality of the spaces extracted from BIM model. We found the experimental results show us a promising way of measuring a relative quality of the space programs.

  • Without scientific understanding of the phase change and the rejuvenation in woody perennials, many tree breeders have successfully rejuvenated and multiplied mature trees of some tree species, i.e., Eucalyptus, Pseudotsuga menziesii Sequoia sempervirens, Pinus radiata, Pinus pinaster, Quercus virginiana, Hedera helix, Juglans, apples, grapes, and so on. Practical techniques discussed to rejuvenate the old trees include grafting to younger stock, growth regulator treatment, pruning, repeated cutting, and in vitro culture. However, a combination of skills mentioned is recommended for rejuvenation of the mature propagation material. It is strongly required to develop a morphological and/or biochemical indicator system to judge the juvenility.

  • Most important factor to consider funnel performance is exhaust gas temperature and exhaust gas concentration Electric equipments on the wheelhouse top affected exhaust gas temperature. So, it is important that electric equipments keep away from high temperature. Though exhaust gas concentration is not a regulation and restraint, the exhaust 9as can cause serious problems for the on-board air quality and result in irreversible damage to the ship and people. So, we pocus on the exhaust gas concentration also. When judge whether a measured concentration is acceptable or not, criteria based on the LTEL (Long Term Exposure Limit). In this paper, we carried out the smoke simulation study. For this analysis, we used FLUENT which is commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code.

  • The catenary system supported by the tunnel bracket which has been used uniquely in KNR was selected as the catenary inside narrow existing tunnel in the electrification of Kyeung-Bu Line for operation of Korea High Speed Train(KTX). It was demanded to judge the maximal operable speed of KTX in this catenary system to implement the planning. To do this, the tunnel bracket was firstly tested to obtain the characteristic data. The stiffness of this bracket are computed depending on the location which catenary installed on. Moreover, the catenary using tunnel bracket is modelled numerically respecting the bracket stiffness. Based on these, the dynamics between this catenary and KTX pantograph are simulated with the program developed by ourselves independently. The simulation result are evaluated according to the generally acceptable criteria. Consequently, the maximal operable speed of KTX in the catenary using KNR(Korean National Railroad) tunnel bracket is predicted and some items which are needed to be kept in the processing of implementation are drawn.

  • Many countries in the North East Asia are competing with each other in order to become a centre of international logistics activities. The competition to become a hub port in Far East region is now fierce. The anticipated investments on improving port facilities and attracting the mega carriers are immense for all the ports in the region and the extent of the effort could cripple the local ports and region's economy given the limited financial resources. It is, however, impossible to avoid the disastrous possibility that the massive investments could be channeled into the port, which will never become a hub port, as no port is ready to currently admit defeat and settle as a small regional port. In an attempt to minimise such disastrous waste of resources, ports need to verify the eligibility of their own. This paper tests a system dynamics model using the Port of Busan to understand and illustrate the principle guideline of investment decision making for ports.

  • This research's purpose is to investigate follows. 1. How do middle school teachers recognize the mathematical communication globally? 2. If we classify the modes of mathematical communication as written, spoken, graphic and active ones, how much do teachers use them and how do the students' communication ability come as teachers judge? 3. What are teachers' thinking, the present condition and the future indication for the application of mathematical communication with computer? 4. Do teachers evaluate their students' communication ability? If then, what is the assessment rubric of student's communication ability? The results are analyzed by frequency analysis including percentile and free writings are arranged by similar responses. The result of this study is that global recognition for mathematical communication, current state for students' concrete performance of mathematical communication, and assessment of mathematical communication & proposals are very lacking.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify availability of the acoustic emission in-situ monitoring method to the internal leak and operating conditions of the turbine major valves relating to safety for turbine operating and prevention of turbine trouble at nuclear power plants. In this study, acoustic emission tests are performed when the pressurized electro-hydraulic control oil flowed through turbine electro-hydraulic controller oil check valve and turbine power/trip fluid solenoid valve in the condition of actual turbine operating. The acoustic emission method was applied to the valves at the site, and the background noise was measured far the abnormal plant condition. To judge for the leak existence ell the object valves, voltage analysis and frequency analysis of acoustic signal emitted from infernal leak in the valve operating condition are performed. It was conformed that acoustic emission method could monitor for valve internal leak to high sensitivity.
